Quantification of left ventricular myocardial collagen system in children, young adults, and the elderly

Abstract: studies on the collagen system of the human myocardium are still limited compared to those on small laboratory animals. the aim of this work was to observe the collagen tissue of the myocardium of the human heart as a function of age. the types of collagen, as well as the density of collagen tissue and the diameter of collagen fibrils, were examined. fragments of the left ventricular wall from 15 hearts, 5 from children, 5 from young adults, and 5 from elderly individuals, were analyzed by using the picrosirius-polarization method and by transmission electron microscopy (tem). the results showed the presence of collagen type iii and collagen type i, both in the endomysium and perimysium of the 3 groups studied. measurements of collagen content in myocardial tissue displayed that both endomysial and perimysial collagen increase in number and thickness in the adult and elderly. these histochemical results coincided with the observations obtained with the electron microscope in showing an increase in the number of collagen fibrils with a large diameter in the adult and elderly hearts. the present results on cardiac collagen may be important for assessing the pathogenesis of several cardiopathies in the hearts of children, young adults, and the elderly.

Abstract: The aim this research is to demonstrate the structure of the Higher Education in Brazil with emphasis in Accounting Education and the college Education of the professor in this field of knowledge. It reports the aspects of college education of the accounting professor from the standpoint of Vasconcelos’ model (1994) dividing it into four fields of education: practical training, technical scientific, pedagogical and, social and political. The gathering of the professors’ perceptions was carried out through an online questionnaire. The base of the analysis was in 383 answers, being 307 of the observations considered valid. The results were identified by using descriptive analysis. The research indicates, in this sample, that the accounting sciences professor in Brazil has predominantly a practical training formation lacking pedagogical preparation, which is the highlighted object in this study.
Indicadores sócio-demográficos e a epidemia de dengue em 2002 no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Abstract: this study analyzed the dengue fever epidemic in 2002 and the socio-demographic context of the state of rio de janeiro, brazil, using spatial analysis and statistical modeling. the incidence rate was calculated for resident dengue cases in the state in 2002. the study analyzed associations between incidence and socio-demographic variables and spatial autocorrelation using the moran global index, which showed spatial dependence for both the outcome and the independent variables. a multivariate linear regression model was used. the variables' proportion of urban population, percentage of the population with running water, and percentage of coverage by the family health program (fhp) explained 30.2% of the total variance in the epidemic's incidence rate. the model's residuals did not show spatial autocorrelation. the associations were in the expected direction, and the findings are corroborated by other studies that showed higher dengue incidence in areas characterized by growing urbanization and deficient running water and water supply, while highlighting the fhp as an important facilitator of vector control strategies.
Co-Inoculation of Soybean with Bradyrhizobium and Azospirillum Promotes Early Nodulation  [PDF]

Abstract: Soybean inoculation with elite strains of Bradyrhizobium to improve nodulation, N2 fixation, and grain yield is well established worldwide. However, when grown in soils where N is deficient, soybean undergoes an initial phase of N starvation that may last up to 20 days after seedling germination due to the lack of synchronism between the phase when seed N reserves are exhausted and the moment when plants begin to benefit from the nitrogen fixed by the bacteria. Practices that promote early nodulation may play a key role in reducing the N starvation period. Azospirillum is a plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) that can stimulate root hair formation and root growth, creating more sites for early root infection and nodule formation by N2-fixing Bradyrhizobium spp. In this study, the effects of co-inoculating soybeans with Bradyrhizobium spp. and Azospirillum brasilense on nodulation precocity and N2 fixation were evaluated under greenhouse and field conditions. Nodule number and dry weight, as well as plant and root dry weight and N accumulated in shoots at 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30 days after emergence (DAE) were evaluated in response to inoculation with Bradyrhizobium spp. alone or when co-inoculated with Azospirillum sp. In the greenhouse, co-inoculated plants nodulated precociously as indicated by a significant increase (p < 0.05) in nodule biomass observed at (include) 21 DAE. More pronounced effects of co-inoculation were observed in the field as early as 18 DAE, suggesting that the presence of Azospirillum helps plants to overcome environmental stresses.
Adapting multiuser 3D virtual environments to heterogeneous devices

Abstract: with the growing dissemination and reliability of wireless networks and the emergence of devices with increasing processing and communication power, applications that up to now were restricted to the pcs are being envisaged to run on devices as heterogeneous as wrist clocks, refrigerators with access to the internet, mobile phones, pdas, set-top-boxes, game consoles etc. application development for this myriad of devices and networks with different capabilities requires special attention from the software programmers and designers -especially when these applications are shared among multiple users. application adaptation, which allows a software to react to device and environment resource variations, is an important process to fit the application to a certain device configuration. a large amount of work has focused on the adaptation of multimedia such as text, images, audio and video. less attention has been given to 3d media adaptation -firstly because of the complexity involved in the 3d application adaptation, and also because true marketing opportunities for 3d applications in heterogeneous devices have just began to emerge. this paper analyses 3d media adaptation as a nonfunctional requirement for 3d multiuser virtual environment applications. an adaptation framework is proposed that can be integrated to the mpeg-4 standard to offer a solution to the adaptation of 3d multiuser virtual environment applications, which can be accessed from heterogeneous devices with different capabilities. the advantages of integrating the framework to the mpeg-4 standard are twofold: it favors the creation of complex applications, with high degree of interaction, such as multiuser 3d collaborative environments; and makes easier to build these applications for heterogeneous devices (from cellular phones to pdas and set-top-boxes) since mpeg-4 is aimed at small mobile devices and narrowband networks, such as some wireless networks.
Spatial modeling of dengue and socio-environmental indicators in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: this study analyzed the spatial distribution of dengue in rio de janeiro, brazil, in 2006, and associations between the incidence per 100,000 inhabitants and socio-environmental variables. the study analyzed reported dengue cases among the city's inhabitants, rainfall, breteau index (for aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus), gini index, and social development index. we conducted mapping and used the global moran index to measure the indicators' spatial autocorrelation, which was positive for all variables. the generalized linear model showed a direct association between dengue incidence and rainfall, one-month rainfall time lag, gini index, and breteau index for a. albopictus. the conditional autoregressive model (car) showed a direct association with rainfall for four months of the year, rain time lag in july, and gini index in february. the results demonstrate the importance of socio-environmental variables in the dynamics of dengue transmission and the relevance for the development of dengue control strategies.

Abstract: the production of lactic acid by fermentation accounts for more than 50% of the world production. to meet the demand, efforts to lower the costs have been the objective of several studies. this work aimed to study the lactic acid production in cashew apple (anacardium orcidentale) syrup. the microorganism used was the leuconostoc mesenteroides b512f. in the experimental investigation, the ideal concentrations of yeast extract and initial sugar were determined. a second experimental investigation was carried out with cashew apple syrup by adding yeast extract and phosphate and by diluting the syrup according to the initial sugar concentrations to optimize the medium culture. a kinetic study was carried out with the optimized substrate obtained. the results showed that the studied strains can produce lactic acid in satisfactory concentrations provided the natural syrup substrate contains only yeast extract and phosphate.
Birds from open environments in the caatinga from state of Alagoas, northeastern Brazil

Abstract: even though the caatinga has been identified as an important area of endemism for south american birds, few studies have been conducted on the distribution, evolution and ecology of birds in this biome. understanding how habitats contribute to maintain the regional bird diversity is extremely important. in this study, carried out in the backwoods of the state of alagoas, we present a rapid survey of a caatinga area and discuss the composition of the avifauna in different habitats. from the record of 105 species, we estimated a local richness of 120 (± 5) species. among the areas surveyed, the dense caatinga shrub areas contributed with more than 42% of the species, holding most of the forest-dependent birds. the open field areas and the vegetation patches contributed 26 and 24% of the observed richness, respectively. the bird community at the vegetation patches is more similar to that registered in the open caatinga shrub areas, than to the fauna of the open fields where these patches are located. our results support the need to conserve environments which harbor typical caatinga vegetation, and also vegetation patches with those characteristics in greatly altered environments.

Considerando, portanto, a relevancia atual deste tema, o presente estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de conhecer os padr es de uso e a percep o sobre internet de pessoas com les o medular adquirida. Constataram-se diferen as estatisticamente significativas entre o tempo de uso e a influência da internet antes e após a les o. Apesar de se verificar padr o de uso similar ao da popula o geral, identificaram-se especificidades que requerem aten o dos servi os especializados de reabilita o, no intuito de aprimorar rotinas de atendimento. Recomendam-se mais pesquisas em diferentes níveis assistenciais. Las Tecnologías de Información y de Comunicación (TIC) están expandiéndose en las áreas de salud, y con eso inician cambios en las relaciones profesional-usuario. Por lo tanto, ante la relevancia actual de este tema, este estudio tuvo como objetivo describir los estándares de uso y las percepciones de la internet de las personas con lesiones adquiridas en la médula espinal. Se encontró diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre el tiempo de uso y la influencia de la internet antes y después de la lesión. Fueran identificados especificidades que requieren atención especializada de los servicios específicos de rehabilitación con el fin de mejorar las rutinas. Se recomienda seguir investigaciones en diferentes niveles de asistencia. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is expanding in the health field and triggering changes in the relationship between professionals and patients. Considering the current relevance of this issue, this study was conducted to identify the usage patterns and perceptions concerning the internet of people with acquired spinal cord injuries. Statistically significant differences were found between the usage time and the influence of the internet before and after injury. Although the respondents' usage pattern is similar to that of the general population, some particularities were identified, which require the attention of specialized rehabilitation services in order to improve service routines. Further research is recommended at different levels of care delivery.

Abstract: the purpose of this study was to determine the silicon source that provides better growth of cattleya loddigesii orchid plants. seedlings from seeds germinated in vitro with approximately 1.0 cm in length were inoculated in tubes containing 15 ml of modified knudson c culture medium, added with sodium silicate (0, 5, 10 and 20 mg l-1) and potassium silicate (0, 5, 10 and 20 ml l-1), in all possible combinations. the culture medium had its ph adjusted to 5.8 ± 0.1 and solidified with 5 g l-1 of agar before the sterilization process at 121oc and 1 atm for 20 minutes. the cultures were maintained in a growth room with irradiance around 35 μmol m-2 s-1, temperature of 25±1oc and photoperiod of 16 hours. the experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme with 5 replications and 20 seedlings per treatment. seedlings of c. loddigesii presented better growth (number of roots, length of the aerial part and of roots) in the modified knudson c culture medium added with 5 ml l-1 of potassium silicate and 20 mg l-1 of sodium silicate. a larger number of shoots is observed with the addition of 5 ml l-1 potassium silicate in culture medium, in the absence of sodium silicate.
