Tamarind Seed Extract Enhances Epidermal Wound Healing

Abstract: Traditional healing power of tamarind fruits and the established antioxidant activity of the seeds drive the present study. Wound healing efficiency of tamarind seed was evaluated. Different solvents: phosphate buffer saline (PBS), water, methanol and ethanol were used to prepare the extract. Circular wound was inflicted on the nape. 10 μl of 5 μg/ml of extract was applied topically twice daily. Wound area was measured using Adobe Photoshop C3 Extended version and the percentage of wound reduction was calculated. PBS extract treatment induced complete wound healing in shortest period (10 days) while water extract, methanol extract and Solcoseryl ointment treatment induced complete wound healing in 11 days and control groups without any treatment took 14 days to heal. Phytochemical screening and Bradford method for protein quantification reveals the presence of alkaloid, saponin and tannin in all samples except PBS extract which tested negative to tannin. Flavonoid tested positive in methanol and ethanol extracts.

Abstract: In many years ago, consumers in Malaysia do not recognize the term of enzyme. However, the fact that today most consumers have known the term even though in general. Indirectly, it shows the spread out of the use of enzymes in food production in Malaysia. Enzyme is a kind of material which is consisting of protein and it is available in all living systems. Even living systems are in need of the enzyme function. It serves as a catalyst for reactions that occur in living systems. Catalyzing a reaction means the reaction can not occur or occurs at a slower rate in the absence of the enzyme. With the enzyme, the reaction can occur at a rate as required and finally produce a product that may be useful for the Muslim community. The finding of this study shows the importance of enzymes in the production of food products, medicine and so on. But however, the Muslim scholars decided that the enzyme must be derived from lawful sources if not any product containing it would be unlawful to be consumed. The importance of this study is very relevant to Muslim community because it will help to solve the problem of food products, medicine and the like in relating to legal decision.

Abstract:

Oil palm drupe which has thick fleshy mesocarp contains rich oil, where storage of oil in it can make up to 80% of its dry mass [1]. Ongoing research interest in oil palms has been focused on the mechanisms of oil production in oil palm drupes, while investigation on the ultrastructural morphometry of its oil storage entity, namely lipid body, has received limited attention. By employing microscopy techniques, this study investigated the morphometric of lipid bodies in the mesocarp, kernel and embryo of oil palms drupes at 22 week-after-anthesis (WAA). This study also investigated the relationship between the size of lipid bodies and oil yield of oil palms at the same state of maturity (22 WAA). The structural arrangements of lipid bodies were found to be different among embryo, kernel and mesocarp of oil palms. It was also found that the size of lipid bodies of mesocarp of oil palms was larger compared to other crops. Lipid bodies in both embryo and mesocarp were statistically shown to be larger in low oil-yielding palms.

Abstract: The current and growing construction industry in the country has led to increasing of accidents related to construction workers. In an attempt to decrease accidents on site, the design safety concept is the most suitable measures to date. Though the impact is evident and potential benefits of its implementation are apparent, widespread application of this intervention in the Malaysia’s construction industry is currently lacking especially in the academic sector. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the integration of safety and health to the current curricula focusing on the engineering programmes and their perceptions towards design safety concept and its implementation. The types of design disciplines included in the research study were limited to academicians. A total of 72 respondents received via questionnaire and the?responses were scored on a 5-point Likert Scale to express their level?of agreement. The results show that the graduates are not equipped with adequate knowledge of safety and health legislation and regulations through the current curricula and disagree that the content of the programmes is adequate. Although majority agree on the positive effect of design safety towards accidents on site, there is still minority who believe that the concept has no significant effect towards site safety. However, this paper concludes that there is no major impediment from the academic sector on the implementation and integration of design safety concept to the undergraduate curricula. The implementation of design safety should be in a well organized structure for effective results towards zeroaccident as well as increases the designers value in the construction industry.
Women Perspective on Islamic Radicalism: A Malaysian Experience

Abstract: The content of this study is a report prepared by a research group on the perspective of women on various issues related to Islamic radicalism, i.e., concept, phenomenon and Islamic societies. This study also examines women's level of understanding about Islam nature and the factors that led to radical behavior and effects of radical action. Results are presented based on 863 survey respondents amongst Muslim women who were selected from several states in Malaysia. Primary data collection was undertaken through a set of structured questionnaires. There are three significant findings from this study. First, this study found that women s understanding of Islam is comparatively lower than male respondents. This level of understanding has affected their perceptions of radical phenomena. Second, their perception on the phenomenon of radicalism is also lower than male respondents.

Abstract: Computer-Aided Decision Making (CADM) has been widely used in various decision contexts. This study is focused on CADM for Choosing Education Programs (CASCEP) to rank the performance of a set of decision alternative with respect to multiple criteria. CASCEP has been developed in Visual Basic (VB) that will select and rank the programs that are more suitable to the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) leavers based on 2 inter-related factors: the student’s SPM results and minimum programs requirements. In this prototype, 5 programs are offered by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) have been selected as a sample programs. Rule-based reasoning technique is used as an engine in order to search the most suitable education program. In this engine, score or value of each program is generated to rank the programs.
Analysis of Variables of Vessel Calls in a Container Terminal  [PDF]

Abstract: The handling efficiency of container terminal may be affected by variables of vessel calls, loading and discharge of container in the terminal. Some of the previous studies indicated that the performance of ship operation would be affected by variables of vessel calls, such as ship size, container loaded and container discharged would affect the handling rate of ship operation, but it didn’t clarify on the degree of relationship and lack of variable container shifted/restowed. Therefore, this study would further study on the softcoming, to analyse the relationship between variables of vessel calls with berth turnaround time, that affected the ship operation’s performance. Extensive observation and survey activities were conducted at Malaysian’s Port and the collected data was based on ship operation delay parameters; like berth turnaround time, total move, total discharge, total load, shift/restow, and length overall of vessels. The initial result showed that total move, total discharge and total load had high correlation with berth turnaround time. The r-value of total move, total discharge and total load are 0.877, 0.716 and 0.804 respectively. Therefore, this study concluded that the berth turnaround time is highly affected by total move, total discharge and total load. Consequently, the research output would be as a decision making tool to port planner.

Abstract: Globalization push container terminal grown rapidly in decade. To fulfill the future traffic requirement, this study highlights marginal expansion planning of infrastructure in a container terminal. By using marginal approach, the expansion plan can be determine correctly and economically stage by stage. A mathematical model has generated to calculate the expansion size, expansion time, interval of expansion, expansion cost, and significant of expansion for each infrastructure respectively. It recommended determining the expansion plan for each infrastructure respectively. This is because one of the infrastructures needs to be expanding but the other may not. The generated model was verified with others model and validated with case study to investigate the practicability of the model. The model serves as expansion decision making tools to assist port expansion planners.
