Abstract: In Mohd Idris [4], the geometric mean approach of deriving the numerical solution for the ordinary differential equations is shown. In this paper, we extend the approach to derive the Runge-Kutta geometric mean method of order 2. Numerical results obtained form selected problems show that the Runge-Kutta geometric mean method is very competitive. However, the Runge-Kutta geometric mean is computationally expensive compared to the standard Runge-Kutta method.

Abstract: The discretization of the second-order linear self-adjoint elliptic partial differential equation subject to periodic boundary conditions results in a system of linear equations of the form Mu = s, where M is block cyclic tridigonal square matrix. In Mohd Idris[1] the relationship between the spectral radius and over-relaxation factor of the problem has been derived. In this paper, numerical experiment is conducted to show that the standart SOR formula is not applicable, although the optimum relaxation factor of both cases coincide asymptotically, that is, when the size of the problem is large. The optimization process of the realaxation factor for the periodic problem is also illustrated.

Abstract: Quality management is a dynamic philosophy that underlines the organisational adaptation and proactive transformation that enables firms to reap real benefits from market opportunities. The faster the market changes, the quicker the transformation that is required for sustaining the firm's internal capabilities and its external competitiveness. Under a competitive pressure, a firm will need to learn faster and lead in best practice for operational excellence and continuously finding ways to shield its advantage from imitation.In the search for determinants for sustainability, this article analyses best practices adopted by quality award-winning organisations and synthesises a collection of critical factors that could assist organisations in improving their performance. From a longitudinal learning on how these leading organisations led themselves into a new sustaining paradigm, the article makes explicit the factors that were considered of paramount importance to sustainability. These success factors become a basis for others to leapfrog ahead into a new performance orbit. A proposed model for sustaining competitiveness has been developed from the creative learning of best practices of leading organisations. This proposed framework presents companies with an opportunity to emulate successful implementation of TQ-based initiatives, and to embed these pioneering concepts, particularly in the context of emerging countries.

Abstract: Pengukuran ciri-ciri luahan sungai pada waktu normal, waktu basah dan waktu selepas banjir telah dijalankan di Sungai Chini dan Sungai Paya Merapuh, Tasik Chini, Pahang. Persampelan telah dijalankan sebanyak lima kali dalam masa lima bulan berturutan, iaitu bermula pada bulan September 2007 sehingga Januari 2008. Eksesais fizikal melibatkan pengukuran ciri-ciri fisiografik sungai seperti pengukuran keratan rentas, kedalaman dan halaju arus sungai diukur bagi dua waktu dalam musim normal dan musim basah. Bagi tujuan keselamatan, persampelan tidak dijalankan semasa banjir berlaku pada bulan Disember 2007, namun penganggaran luahan banjir dilakukan dengan mengunakan rumus Manning bagi kedua-dua sungai kajian. Kedalaman hujan diukur menggunakan tolok hujan HOBO Proware dengan bacaan tertinggi direkodkan dalam bulan Disember 2007 iaitu bacaan kumulatif sebanyak 844.4 mm. Aras air di Sungai Chini diperolehi daripada stesen luahan sungai di Kuala Sungai Chini manakala persampelan dan pengukuran in situ bagi mendapatkan data hidraulik Sungai Paya Merapuh dilakukan secara manual setiap kali persampelan mengikut musim dijalankan.. Berdasarkan ujian kolerasi yang dijalankan, kadar alir sungai adalah dipengaruhi oleh kedalaman sungai dan taburan hujan dengan signifikan dengan bacaan 3.32 x 108 ± 2.86 x 106 L/hari air (selepas banjir), sebanyak 2.13 x 108 ± 1.01 x 107 L/hari air (waktu biasa), dan 3.10 x108 ± 5.04 x 106 L/hari (waktu hujan) bagi Sg Chini, manakala bagi Sg Paya Merapuh adalah 9.96 x 106 ± 2.17 x 105 L/hari (selepas banjir), 1.29 x 107 ± 1.12 x 106 L/hari (waktu biasa) dan 1.60 x 108 ± 1.64 x 107 L/hari (waktu hujan), dan Kajian ini memberikan maklumat awalan yang penting tentang adaptasi dan keupayaan maksimum Sungai Chini dan Sungai Paya Merapuh terhadap kejadian banjir.
Blocks Identification and Implementation for E-commerce Development Tool

Abstract: E-commerce is a process of buying, selling, transferring or exchanging products or services using computer network. Small businesses are now encouraged to explore the use of e-commerce in order to expand their market. However, studies shows that the use of e-commerce among small businesses is still in the early stage. The main barrier to the e-commerce adoption amongst these businesses is the complexity and cost of e-commerce development. In order to solve the problem, there is a need to develop a software tool that can help small businesses to develop their own e-commerce application. This study describes the concept of a block-based e-commerce development tool. By using this approach, an end-user can develop an application by integrating available software blocks. In order for these software tool to be utilized, sufficient number of software blocks need to be identified and developed. The block identification process is done by using the use case analysis technique. From the result of the analysis, 16 software blocks needed for the development of e-commerce applications have been identified. These blocks are then implemented by using the Java programming language.

Abstract: Free space optical communication (FSO) proves to be very effective and efficient technology for wireless communication. This work basically deals with the designing of FSO systems. Further, a comparative study has been made to ascertain which modulation technique proves better for communication. This paper investigates the performance of ASK and PSK modulation based FSO system by varying different FSO parameters under several conditions including haze, rain, mist and fog. Finally, simulation results are analysed and discussed.
Studies on the Sea-Surface Current-Circulation Pattern in the South China Sea derived from Satellite Altimetry

Abstract: Radar altimeters flown in space are very useful tools for providing information about the ocean globally and continuously, including the study of surface currents. This research is concerned with the geostrophic currents in the South China Sea. Maps of geostrophic current-circulation patterns are produced for four periods, which are the northeast monsoon, the southwest monsoon and the inter-monsoon periods for April and October in 2004 and in 2005. The main data utilised are the sea-level anomaly from Jason-1 satellite altimetry data. To compute the geostrophic current velocity, the geostrophic equations were used. In order to validate the derived surface current, the correlation coefficient with field measurement data was determined. The field data are measured using Lagrangian buoys under the Data Buoy Cooperation Panel programme (DBCP) and also from the Japanese Oceanography Data Centre (JODC). In this study, it was found that the correlation of geostrophic current speed and direction is reasonable with coefficient of 0.9 and 0.7, respectively. As far as the geostrophic current-circulation pattern is concerned, the current in the South China Sea was pushed southward during the northeast monsoon and reversed during the southwest monsoon period. In addition, during the northeast and southwest monsoon, the water moved in anticlockwise and clockwise directions, respectively. This leads to the conclusion that the geostrophic circulation pattern can be monitored from satellite altimetry data.
Improved the Prediction of Multiple Linear Regression Model Performance Using the Hybrid Approach: A Case Study of Chlorophyll-a at the Offshore Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu  [PDF]

Abstract: Efficiency and precision in prediction of Chlorophyll-a using this model is still a pandemic among researchers, due to the natural conditions in ocean water systems itself, which involved chemical, biological and physical processes and interaction among them may affect the model performance drastically. Thus, to overcome this problem as well as to improve the strength of MLR, we proposed a hybrid approach, i.e., an Artificial Neural Network to the MLR coins as Artificial Neural Network-Multiple Linear Regression (ANN-MLR). To investigate the performance of the proposed model, we compared Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and proposed hybrid Artificial Neural Network and Multiple Linear Regression (ANN-MLR) in the prediction of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration by statistical measurement which are MSE and MAE. Achieving our objectives of study, we used 4 parameters, i.e. temperature (°C), pH, salinity (ppt), DO (ppm) at the Offshore Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia. The results showed that our proposed model can improve the performance of the model as compared to ANN and MLR due to small errors generated, error reduced, and increased the correlation coefficient for all parameters in both MSE and MAE, respectively. Thus, this result indicated that our proposed model is efficient, precise and almost perfect correlation as compared to ANN and MLR.
