Anti HIV-1 and antimicrobial activity of the leaf extracts of Calotropis procera

Abstract: Calotropis procera R.Br. (Asclepiadiaceae) is an important medicinal plant whose leaves and roots have multiple uses. The plant is a rich source of many bioactive compounds which are of medicinal importance. The study was undertaken to investigate the anti HIV-1 and antibacterial activities of the crude leaf extracts of C. procera. Hot water extract was used for evaluating the efficacy against the growth of HIV. Inhibition of p24 antigen′s expression was used as the method for the study. Antibacterial activity was tested against four different bacteria using agar well diffusion method. Zones of inhibition were measured with different concentrations of the extracts and some of them gave better values than the antibiotics used. The results were presented as the average and standard error of triplicate experiments. The statistical significance was checked at P<0.5. A dose-dependent inhibition of the p24 antigen expression was observed and the extract was found to be efficient against HIV-1. Ethyl acetate extract was effective against all the bacteria tested. The results observed support ancient and traditional medicinal values of C. procera.
Accumulation Of Fluoride In Etroplus Suratensis, Oreochromis Mossambicus And Anabas Testudineus Caught From The Surface Fresh Water Sources In Alappuzha Town, Kerala, India

Abstract: Fluoride Naturally Occurring In Ground Water And Surface Water Is Known To Be Potent To Cause Serious Dental And Skeletal Fluorosis In Areas Where Water Contains Much More Than The Required Amount Of Fluoride. Aim Of This Study Was To Relate The Presence Of Fluoride In Water With Fresh Water Fishes Of The Corresponding Aquatic Body From Which Water Samples Were Collected. Three Species Of Fishes Etroplus Suratensis (Pearl Spot), Oreochromis Mossambicus (Tilapia), And Anabas Testudineus (Climbing Perch) Were Analyzed For Fluoride. The Samples Of Fishes And The Water Samples From Where Fish Was Caught Were Collected From July 2012, October 2012 And January 2013 From The Surface Fresh Water Sources Of Alappuzha Town. A Mean Fluoride (N=9) Concentration Of 0.051±0.01 (Mean±SD), 0.042±0.02 And 0.035±0.02 Were Shown By The Water Samples Collected In July, October And January Respectively. Though Fluoride Is Present In The Water Samples At A Very Low Concentration, There Is Considerable Fluoride Content In The Fish Samples Collected From The Same Water Source. The Accumulation Of Fluoride By Fishes Was Found To Be Highly Variable With Respect To Species And Month. E. Suratensis Had Accumulated 4.071±0.71 Ppm Fluoride In July, 274.29±2.54 Ppm In October And 2.35±0.42 Ppm In January. O. Mossambicus Was Estimated To Contain 18.14±0.95, 23.33±1.05 And 12.195±1.22 Ppm Fluoride In July, Oct And Jan Respectively. No Fluoride Was Detected In A. Testudineus Samples Collected In October, Whereas It Accumulated 6.695±0.43 And 28.18±2.01 Ppm Fluoride In July And January Respectively.

Abstract: Understandings the basics of Cytochrome P450 (P450 or CYP) will help to discern drug metabolism. CYP, a super-family of heme-thiolate proteins, are found in almost all living organisms and is involved in the biotransformation of a diverse range of xenobiotics, therapeutic drugs and toxins. Here, we describe DrugMetZ DB, a database for CYP metabolizing drugs. The DB is implemented in MySQL, PHP and HTML.
Image Deblurring in Bayesian Framework Using Template Based Blur Estimation

Abstract: Image deblurring aims to reconstruct a high quality image from a degraded image. For deblurring, the blurring function which causes the degradation is estimated first. A template based blur estimation method is presented here which can identify Gaussian and Uniform blur. Due to the ill-posed nature of image restoration (IR) process, prior knowledge of natural images is used to regularize the IR problem. The Bayesian approach provides the means to incorporate prior knowledge in data analysis. A comparative analysis using various priors was studied qualitatively. PSNR, SNR, SSIM and IQI are the performance measures used.
7. Phytochemical and pharmacognostic investigation of antidiabetic Costus pictus. D. Don

Abstract: The present study was carried out to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Costus pictus (C.pictus) D. Don, on alloxan induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of fresh leaf extract (200 and 400 mg/kg body weight) for 60 days treatment resulted in significant decrease in blood glucose level and lipid profiles. There were also significant changes observed in carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes and antioxidants. The nitrogenous wastes such as urea, uric acid and creatinine were also found decreased after the treatment. The study clearly shows that the effect of the drug (400 mg/kg body weight) was equally effective with the standard drug glibenclamide. To find out the biomarkers, pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies were carried out . The leaf of C. pictus is characterized by simple unicellular, pointed non-glandular trichomes, absence of palisade layer and hypodermal layers containing shattered crystals. Micromorphological characters of the leaf are also given. The leaves are found to contain flavonoids such as kaempferol, 3’, 4’-di O-Me-quercetin and 4’-OMe-Kaempferol and phenolic acids such as gentisic, 2, 5-dihydroxy benzoic acid, o-coumaric, melilotic, α-resorcyclic, 3,5-dihydroxy benzoic acid, p-hydroxy benzoic acid, cis and trans-p-coumaric acid.
Is dark energy evolving?

Abstract: We look for evidence for the evolution in dark energy density by employing Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Distance redshift data from supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) along with WMAP7 distance priors are used to put constraints on curvature parameter Omega_k and dark energy parameters. The data sets are consistent with a flat Universe. The constraints on the dark energy evolution parameters obtained from supernovae (including CMB distance priors) are consistent with a flat Lambda-CDM Universe. On the other hand, in the parameter estimates obtained from the addition of BAO data the second principal component, which characterize a non-constant contribution from dark energy, is non-zero at 1-sigma. This could be a systematic effect and future BAO data holds key to making more robust claims.
Exploitation of Marine Perciformes Fishery Resources off Tuticorin, Gulf of Mannar

Abstract: Tuticorin is an important marine fish landing centre in India. This study was carried out between the months of June, 2008 to May, 2010. The fishes which belong to perciformes order were taken up for this research. The average annual catch of teleosts during the period 2008-2010 was 33808.1 tonnes. Perciformes contribute major teloest catches 64.2% (23658.34 tonnes) and 63.06% (23341.02 tonnes) for the period of 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively. The perciformes fishery distinguishes with 41 families that come under 9 orders. The important families Carangidae (13.98%), Lethrinidae (5.565%), Leiognathidae (8.29%), Nemipteridae (5.33%), Scombridae (6.56%) and Sphyraenidae (5.25%) were noted. Selar crumenophthalmus, Lethrinus nebulosus, Leiognathus dussumieri, Nemipterus delagoae, Rastrelliger kanagurta and Sphyraena jello were contributed in a peculiar level on perciformes fishery.
PERFORMANCE OF A FORCED CONVECTION SOLAR DRIER INTEGRATED WITH GRAVEL AS HEAT STORAGE MATERIAL FOR CHILI DRYING

Abstract: An indirect forced convection solar drier integrated with different sensible heat storage maternal has been developed and tested its performance for drying chili under the metrological conditions of Pollachi, India. The system consists of a flat plate solar air heater with heat storage unit, a drying chamber and a centrifugal blower. Drying experiments have been performed at an air flow rate of 0.25 kg/s. Drying of chili in a forced convection solar drier reduces the moisture content from around 72.8% (wet basis) to the final moisture content about 9.1% in 24 h. Average drier efficiency was estimated to be about 21%. The specific moisture extraction rate was estimated to be about 0.87 kg/kWh.
Performance Evaluation and Simulation of Pressurized Gasification

Abstract: The emergence of biomass based energy warrants the evaluation of syn-gas from biomass gasification as a fuel for power systems. The earlier investigations reveal that the operating parameters strongly affect the syn gas quality. The gasifier performance was investigated with different operating pressure. The downdraft gasifier has tested with silver oak woodchips of size approximately 12mm×12mm×12mm. The total feed of 8-8.5kg of wood was fed into the system and an airflow rate of 130 lpm supplied by compressor and the gasifier was tested different pressure conditions. The main variables namely oxidation zone temperature, combustible gas contents (H2, CO & CH4), calorific value, gas production rate and conversion efficiency was studied. The percentage of total combustible gas is varied between 30.60% - 35.97% and the average composition is N2 = 44.29% – 54.78%, CH4 = 0.62% – 1.51%, H2 = 15.7% – 25.48%, CO = 7.96% – 11.4%, CO2 = 11.37% – 19.70%. The calorific value of syn gas was found to vary between 3.860 MJ/m3 – 4.374.94 MJ/m3. The conversion efficiency varied between 86.8% - 73.7%.Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to predict the performance of the down draft biomass gasifier. For simulation purpose the combustion zone of the gasifier was separately modeled and analyzed.
A Novel Forager Agent Based Approach to Capture the Future Browsing Pattern of Online Users

Abstract: A big challenge for the web master of any e-commerce website is to match user needs and keep them continuously to browse their site. It is easy for any unsatisfied user to reach out the counterpart site in a single click. Many Web usage mining methods were adopted to work on web server log and capture the future browsing pattern of user. However, the accuracy of the methods can’t satisfy the user especially in huge site. This paper presents the novel Forager agent based architecture that uses its collective intelligence for identifying the future browsing pattern of user. Our practical implementation shows that accuracy and coverage measures are very much improved than existing methods.
