Abstract: In the present study, Polygala rosmarinifolia whole plant was extracted with ethanol and evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity in rats using a carrageenan induced paw edema method. Ethanol extract exhibits potent anti-inflammatory activity at 200mg/kg at 3rd hr after administration is compared with reference standard drug, Indomethacin. Observed pharmacological activity in the present study provides scientific validation of ethnomedicinal use of this plant in treating acute inflammation.
ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF POLYGALA CHINENSIS L. WHOLE PLANT ON ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

Abstract: Administration of ethanol extract of Polygala chinensis whole plant (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg body weight) to alloxan induced diabetic rats for 14 days reduced the elevated level of lipid peroxidation (LPO). The treatment also resulted in significant increase in reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in serum, liver and kidney. The results confirm the antioxidant activity of P. chinensis whole plant and suggest that because of its antioxidant effects its administration may be useful in controlling the diabetic complications in experimental diabetic rats.

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antidiabetic Potential of ethanol extract of Feronia elephantum Correa leaf and bark in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced in Albino rats by administration of alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/kg). The ethanol extract of F. elephantum leaf and bark at a dose of 400mg/kg of body weight was administered separately at a single dose per day to diabetes induced rats for a period of 14 days. The effect of ethanol extract of F. elephantum leaf and bark on blood glucose, serum lipid profile, the levels of lipid peroxides and antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione were examined. Oral administration of F. elephantum leaf and bark extract to diabetic rats for 14 days significantly reduced the levels of blood glucose, lipid parameters except HDL-C and lipid peroxidation, but increased the activities of plasma insulin and antioxidant enzymes. Ethanol extract of F. elephantum supplementation is useful in controlling the blood glucose level, improves the plasma insulin and lipid metabolism. It is beneficial in preventing diabetic complication from lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system in experimental diabetic rats; therefore, it could be useful for prevention or early treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract: Pothos scandens L. known to the Kanikkars as ‘Paraioutan’ is an important medicinal plant. The Kanikkar tribe, inhabitants of Agasthiarmalai Biosphere Reserve, Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India. use leaf and stem of this plant to reduce body heat and also helps in conception. The present investigation deals with the pharmacognostic studies of the leaf and stem of the said plant. Pharmacognostic studies include microscopic, physicochemical constant (ash & extractive values), Fluorescence analysis and preliminary phytochemical evaluations. HEPATOPROTECTIVE AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF CANSCORA PERFOLIATA LAM (GENTIANACEAE) AGAINST CCL4 INDUCED HEPATOTOXICITY IN RATS

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanol extract of whole plant of Canscora perfoliata in CCl4 induced hepatotoxic rats. Administration of hepatotoxins (CCl4) showed significant elevation of serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP, bilirubin, conjugated, unconjugated bilirubin and lipid peroxidation. Treatment with Canscora perfoliata (150 and 300mg/kg) significantly reduced the above mentioned parameters. The plant extract also enhanced the antioxidant activity. The ethanol extract of Canscora perfoliata have significant effect on the CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity animal models.
Hepatoprotective and Antioxidant effect of Polygala rosmarinifolia Wight & Arn against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

Abstract: Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxicated rats showed significant elevation in serum enzymes, bilirubin and lipid peroxidation of the liver tissues and reduction in serum total protein, superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione peroxide activity. Treatment with ethanol extract of Polygala rosmarinifolia whole plant altered the above parameters to the levels of near normal. All the above results were comparable with the standard drug silymarin (100mg/kg) treated group. Thus the present study ascertains that the ethanol extract of Polygala rosmarinifolia whole plant possesses significant hepatoprotective activity.
Antioxidant, Antihyperlipidaemic and Antidiabetic Activity of Eugenia Floccosa Bedd Leaves in Alloxan Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: The ethanol extract of Eugenia floccosa Bedd (Family: Myrtaceae) leaf was investigated for its antioxidant, antihyperlipidaemicand antidiabetic effect in Wistar Albino rats. Diabetes was induced in Albino rats by administration of alloxan monohydrate (150mg/kg, i.p). The ethanol extracts of E. floccosa at a dose of 150 and 300mg/kg of body weight were administered at single dose per day to diabetes induced rats for a period of 14 days. The effect of ethanol extract of E. floccosa leaf extract on blood glucose, plasma insulin, creatinine, glycosylated haemoglobin, urea serum lipid profile [total cholesterol (TR), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein – cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein– cholesterol (VLDL-C), high density lipoprotein – cholesterol (HDL-C) and phospholipid (PL)] serum protein, albumin,globulin, serum enzymes [serum glutamate pyruvate transaminases (SGPT) and serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminases(SGOT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP)], lipoprotein peroxidation (LPO) antioxidant enzymes (catalase (CAT),superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were measured in the diabetic rats. The ethanol extract of Eugenia floccosa leaf elicited significant reductions of blood glucose (P<0.05), lipid parameters except HDL-C, serum enzymes and significantly increased HDL-C and antioxidant enzymes. The extracts also caused significant increase in plasma insulin (P<0.05) in the diabetic rats. From the above results, it is concluded that ethanol extract of Eugenia floccosa possesses significant antidiabetic, antihyperlipidaemic and antioxidant effectsin alloxan induced diabetic rats.

Abstract: This study was intended to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of ethanol extract of Canscora perfoliata whole plant in carrageenan induced paw edema in Wistar Albino rats at the dose level of 150 and 300mg/kg administrated orally. Ethanol extracts exhibit potent anti-inflammatory activity at 300 mg/kg at 3 hrs. after administration in compare with reference standard Indomethacin. This study establisted anti-inflammatory activity of whole plant of Canscora perfoliata.
HPTLC FINGER PRINT ANALYSIS OF PHYTOCOMPOUNDS AND IN VITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF EUGENIA FLOCCOSA BEDD.

Abstract: This paper has reported the preliminary phytochemical screening, HPTLC analysis of phytocompounds and in vitro antioxidant activities of ethanol extract of Eugenia floccosa leaves. This is the first report on the antioxidant activity of this plant. The preliminary phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids, coumarin, catechin, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, glycosides and terpenoids. HPTLC analysis also confirmed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, glycosides and terpenoids. The antioxidant activities of the leaves in ethanol extract are assessed using different models like DPPH, superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical and ABTS+ cation radical and reducing power at different concentrations. The ethanol extract at 800μg/ml showed maximum scavenging activity. Results obtained revealed that, ethanol extract of leaves of E. floccosa possess highly antioxidant activity. Thus his study suggests that, E. floccosa plant can be used as a potent source of natural antioxidant.
