Exploring the Catalytic Activity of Zirconia, Zirconia Supported Metals and Metal Oxides for Oxidation of Phenol  [PDF]

Abstract: Catalytic oxidation/degradation of phenol with molecular oxygen in aqueous medium by Zirconia, zirconia supported metals and metal oxides at low temperature were studied in a three necked batch reactor. The catalysts prepared were characterized by modern techniques like XRD, SEM and EDX. The activities of different catalysts for the oxidation of phenol in aqueous medium were found to be in the order; Pt-Pd/ZrO2 > Bi-Pt/ZrO2 > Bi-Pd/ZrO2> Pt/ZrO2 > Pd/ZrO2 > Cu/ZrO2> Mn/ZrO2 > Bi/ZrO2. The enhanced catalytic activity of Bi-Pt/ZrO2 is attributed to Bi which in contact with Pt particles promotes its catalytic activity. In short, catalytic oxidation was found to be an effective tool, for the removal of phenol, from industrial waste water.

Synthesis and Characterization of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Supported on Ziconia and Its Application in the Gas-Phase Oxidation of Cyclohexanol to Cyclohexanone  [PDF]

Iron oxide nanoparticles supported on zirconia were prepared by precipitation-deposition method and characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TGA/DTA, surface area and particle size analysis. Catalytic activities of the catalysts were tested in the gas-phase conversion of cyclohexanol in a fixed-bed flow type, Pyrex glass reactor, at 433 - 463 K. Major detected products were cyclohexanone, cyclohexene and benzene, depending on the used catalyst. The rate of reaction was significantly raised by the introduction of molecular oxygen in the feed gas, thereby suggesting the oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of iron oxide nanoparticles supported on zirconia treated with hydrogen at 553 K for 2 hours, was more selective and better than the unreduced iron oxide nanoparticles supported on zirconia, in the gas-phase oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone. Experimental results showed that there was no leaching of metal, and that the catalyst was thus truly heterogeneous.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a system that provides security to improve on-line examination by utilizing technologies such as biometric authentication, internet-firewall, cryptography, network protocol and object oriented paradigms. Furthermore, we propose a framework for conducting on-line exams through insecure internet backbone. However, the proposed system will provide a secure communication based cryptography and group communications. In our research paper, we discuss the performance of students online course exam with respect to security and main challenges faced by online course exams within the university. We conclude that by improving the security system using bio metrics face recognition that can be incorporated into the proposed system to fulfill the challenge of online exam.

Abstract: ?采用一种环境友好的方法,以分子氧为氧化剂,以ZrO2为催化剂,在无溶剂的条件下实现了醇的选择性氧化.苯甲醛、环己酮和辛醛等是相应醇的主要氧化产物.考察了不同反应条件(搅拌速度、反应时间和温度)、催化剂制备参数(焙烧温度和负载量)及氧分压等的影响.结果发现,对于醇氧化生成相应羰基化合物,1223K焙烧的ZrO2比723K焙烧的ZrO2显示出更高的催化活性.催化剂在反应混合物中不溶解,可以通过简单的过滤使其分离并重复使用.当搅拌速度大于900r/min时,对醇的转化速率无明显的影响.
Spreading Behaviour of Silicone Oil and Glycerol Drops on Coated Papers

Abstract: The effect of physical properties represented by viscosity and surface tension of liquid spreading on coated papers was investigated. Two substrates of different surface roughness were used to study the spreading behaviour of silicon oil and glycerine/water solutions in terms of contact angle, wetted drop base area and drop height as a function of time. The liquid spreading on coated papers was found to vary depending on the liquid physical properties. Liquids with lower surface tension (silicon oil) and viscosity prevailed better wettability and vice versa. High surface roughness reduced the liquid spreading. Despite being traditionally used as a wetting indicator, contact angles were found to be insufficient to evaluate the spreading of liquids on these substrates. Hence, other parameters such as drop base area and drop height should also be considered.
Studies on Population Dynamics of Fruit Flies (Diptera:Tephritidae) in Guava and Nectrin Orchards in Islamabad

Abstract: The population dynamics of fruit flies was studied in guava and nectrin orchards at National Agricultural Research Centre, Islamabad, Pakistan, using pheromone traps baited with a mixture of methyl eugenol, sugar and naled. Generally, flies were caught in higher numbers in nectrin orchard than in guava orchard, however, the difference was not statistically significant. The fruit flies were present in the field throughout the year except January. They were caught in the traps in greater numbers from May to August and their population was at the peak in July in both guava (80.66 males/trap/week) and nectrin (168.66 males/trap/week) orchards. Three species, Dacus zonatus (Saunders), Dacus dorsalis Hendel and Dacus cucurbitae Coquillett were caught in the traps. Dacus zonatus was the dominant species and its population was significantly higher (F = 5.73, df = 2, P = 0.0073) than other two species. It appears to be a severe pest of these fruits as it was present in the field almost through out the year and in greater numbers in the warmer half of the year. Dacus cucurbitae was caught in the traps in very small numbers and this species does not seem to be a serious pest of guava and nectrin under Islamabad ecological conditions.
Evaluation of Wheat Varieties under the Agro-climatic Condition of Barani Agricultural Research Station, Kohat

Abstract: To select drought tolerant and well adapted wheat varieties for barani condition of Kohat a study was carried out on wheat varieties to test their yield potential, yield stability and better adaptability to the rainfed agro-climatic conditions of kohat division. Overall yield performance in both the years was given by FD-91002 and Suliman-96. In 1997-98 FD-91002 and Inqilab-91 gave good performance according to earliness, bhoosa yield and grain yield kg ha-1 i.e. 6175 and 5759 kg ha-1 bhoosa and 4645 and 4242 kg ha-1 grain, respectively which was due to frequent and timely rainfall. While in 1998-99, rainfall was less and in that moisture stress conditions among the same test varieties Suliman-96 and FD-91019 gave highest grain yield of 2311 and 2233 kg ha-1.

Abstract: We introduce a new family of classes of operators termed as *p-paranormal operator, classes *A(p,p); p > 0 and *A(p,q); p, q > 0, parallel to p-paranormal operator and classes A(p,p); p> 0 and A(p,q); p, q > 0 introduced by M. Fujii, D. Jung, S. H. Lee, M. Y. Lee and R. Nakamoto [1]. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for p-hyponormal operator T∈B(H)to be *p-paranormal and the monotonicity of *A(p,q). We also present an alternative proof of a result of M. Fujii, et al. [1, Theorem 3.4].

Abstract: A method of Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1/2 particles in external fields is proposed; in the present work the basic properties of the Dirac hamiltonian in the FW representation in the noncommutative phase-space are investigated and the Schrödinger-Pauli equation is found, knowing that the used methods for extracting the full phase-space noncommutative Dirac equation are, the Bopp-shift linear translation method, and the Moyal-Weyl product (*-product).
