Coenzyme Q10 May be Effective in the Treatment of Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
Mohammad Hashemi,Ali Bahari,Gholamreza Bahari Saeid Ghavami
Iranian Journal of Medical Hypotheses & Ideas , 2008,
Abstract: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents a spectrum of disorders characterized by predominantly macrovesicular hepatic steatosis that occur in individuals even in the absence of consumption of alcohol in amounts considered harmful to the liver. At present, there is no standard recommended treatment for NAFLD. Treatment currently focuses on gradual weight loss through diet and regular exercise. Insulin sensitizers such as thiazolidinediones and metformin show promise, and several studies have explored the role of lipid lowering agents and antioxidants. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) is a powerful antioxidant and has an important role in respiratory metabolism, as a mobile electron and proton carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. However, to date, there is no published clinical trial on CoQ in NAFLD. We postulate the hypothesis that CoQ might be effective in the treatment of NAFLD.

Behbood , 2011,
Abstract: Background: Knowledge is limited concerning the role of temperament and character factors on schizophrenia. Recent studies suggest that dimensions of temperament and character influence symptoms and functions in schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between temperament and character with positive and negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: The research sample consisted of 100 men which were randomly selected from schizophrenia patients with positive and negative symptoms at Razi hospital in Tabriz. Temperament and character inventory and positive and negative symptoms scale were used for data collection. Data was analyzed using t-test and discriminate analyses. Results: The research findings showed that patients with schizophrenia with negative symptoms had higher levels of self– transcendence and harm avoidance. However, patients with schizophrenia with positive symptoms had higher levels of cooperativeness. The results of discriminate analysis showed that explained 37 percent of variance of self– transcendence, harm avoidance and cooperativeness for only function between groups of schizophrenia with positive and negative symptoms. Discriminate function obtained was classified correctly by stepwise method 68.3 percent schizophrenia with positive and negative symptoms. Conclusion: It can be concluded that self– transcendence, harm avoidance and cooperativeness discriminated the patients with schizophrenia with positive and negative symptoms. The study confirmed important implications about intensity of symptomology and early intervention for patients with schizophrenia.

Indian Journal of Medical Sciences , 2008,
Abstract: Background : Evaluated serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), as an early index for diagnosis of neonatal hypothyroidism, indicates insufficient supply of thyroid hormones. Objective : The aim of the study was to estimate the incidence of neonatal hypothyroidism and assessment of iodine deficiency in the eastern part of Iran. Settings and Design : A cross-sectional study was conducted in a pilot screening. Materials and Methods : The measurement of blood TSH spotted on filter paper was performed by ELISA method in 59,436 neonates. TSH value equal to 5 mU/L was considered cut off point. The diagnosis of hypothyroidism in neonates with the blood TSH higher than the cut off point was based on clinical examinations and laboratory tests (serum TSH and T4). Statistical Analysis: The groups were compared using chi-square and ANOVA tests. Results : In our study, the recall rate and incidence of hypothyroidism were 3.6% and 2 per 1000 neonates respectively. Based on the proposal made by WHO/UNICEF/ICCIDD, the results of our study showed a mild iodine deficiency in the area. Conclusions : A comprehensive policy should be developed for control of iodine deficiency and treatment of hypothyroidism in the studied population and neighboring countries.

Journal of Research in Medical Sciences , 2007,
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Femoral shaft fractures are major causes of mortality and morbidity and are managed with intramedullary nailing (IMN). In this study we compared the results of open and closed nailing in femoral shaft fractures. Between 1993 and 2001 we managed 136 femoral shaft fractures by IMN (81 closed and 55 open nailings) METHODS: in 120 patients with mean age of 36.2 years. The mean time of follow up was two years. Radiologic and clinical results were analyzed with SPSS software using student-t and Fisher test. RESULTS: 93.2% healed within six months. 2.9% required dynamization; total union rate was 96%. Full weight bearing was permitted between 5-16 weeks (mean of 10.62 weeks) in the closed method, and 10-20 weeks (mean of 12.83 weeks) in the open method (P<0.001). Complications included 4.41% nonunions, 2.9% shortening, 10.8% limited range of movement, 1.47% deep infection, and 6.6% malunion. Nonunion was observed in 2 cases in closed and in 4 patients in open method (P = 0.039). Closed series showed higher rate of malunion (P = 0.181, P = 0.221). CONCLUSIONS: In closed method attention should be paid to malalignment while locking the nail.

Molecular Biology Research Communications , 2017, DOI: -
Abstract: The exact role of dopamine transporter gene (DAT1) in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder type 1 (BD) is not understood. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the possible association between 30, 40 and 63 bp variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) polymorphisms of DAT1 gene and the risk of type 1 (BD) in a sample of Iranian population. This case-control study was performed on 152 BD patients and 153 psychiatrically healthy subjects. Genotyping of the variant was done by polymerase chain reaction method. Totally, the findings did not support an association between DAT1 VNTR polymorphisms and the risk of BD in a sample of southeast Iranian population.

Abstract: This study aims to identify the level of understanding, appreciation and practice of Malay Language identity among students of education at five public universities in Malaysia. A total of 1000 students, that is 200 persons per a Public University ranked as Research University served as the respondents. Randomly selected respondents were studying in various educational programs in the Faculty of Education in Public University which UKM, UM, USM, UPM and UTM. Questionnaire was used for data collection. Instruments developed by researchers have a high level of validity and reliability which is 0.75. Data were analyzed by descriptively and inferentially?using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. The results showed that in general, education students of public universities still maintain their Malay identity. However, in terms of Malay language appreciation and practice it is at the level still remained identity. UM students have the lowest level of understanding, appreciation and practice of their Malay language. USM students are the student with the highest level of Malay language identity in all three aspects. The implication of this study is the university’s emphasis on the mastery of written and spoken English language to some extent affects the level of understanding, appreciation and practice of the Malay language among education students of the Public University.
Investigation of (111) wafers and comparison with (100) substrates

Iranian Journal of Physics Research , 2012,
Abstract: In the last decade, Si(100) has been used as a suitable substrate in field effect transistors. Some issues such as leakage current and tunneling current through the ultrathin films have been increased with shrinking the electronic devices – particularly, field effect transistors – to nanoscale, which is threatening more use of Si(100). We have thus demonstrated a series of experiments to grow ultrathin films on both Si(100) and Si(111) substrates and studied their nanostructural properties to see the possibility of replacing Si(100) with Si(111). The obtained results indicate that Si(111) substrate with silicon nitride film on top is desirable.

Abstract: The primary human hypertrophic scar and normal skin fibroblasts were successfully established and identified by HSP47 and FSP markers. On the other hand, different pattern of protein expressions were found in cultured fibroblasts from hypertrophic scar and normal fibroblasts skin cells after treatment with the chitosan derivatives sheet. The CTCF protein was up-regulated in fibroblasts hypertrophic scar upon treatment with chitosan derivatives. In contrast, the amount of CTCF protein was found unchanged in normal skin fibroblasts both treated and untreated. The YB-1 protein was expressed almost similarly in normal and hypertrophic scar when treated with chitosan but the expression differed when untreated. The c-myc and p53 proteins were expressed in fibroblasts hypertrophic scar followed by up-regulation after chitosan derivatives treatment. The c-myc and p53 expressions were not detected in normal fibroblasts neither untreated nor treated. The CTCF, YB-1, c-myc and p53 proteins behaved in different manners in human hypertrophic scar and normal fibroblasts skin cells. The novel chitosan derivatives sheet in this study may play roles in the control of cell growth and proliferation of human hypertrophic scar and normal fibroblasts skin cells. The mechanisms underlying expression of these protein factors remain unclear and further studies are still undergoing in our laboratory.

Abstract: Eurycoma longifolia is reputed as an aphrodisiac and remedy for decreased male libido. A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, parallel group study was carried out to investigate the clinical evidence of E. longifolia in men. The 12-week study in 109 men between 30 and 55 years of age consisted of either treatment of 300 mg of water extract of E. longifolia (Physta) or placebo. Primary endpoints were the Quality of Life investigated by SF-36 questionnaire and Sexual Well-Being investigated by International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and Sexual Health Questionnaires (SHQ); Seminal Fluid Analysis (SFA), fat mass and safety profiles. Repeated measures ANOVA analysis was used to compare changes in the endpoints. The E. longifolia (EL) group significantly improved in the domain Physical Functioning of SF-36, from baseline to week 12 compared to placebo () and in between group at week 12 (). The EL group showed higher scores in the overall Erectile Function domain in IIEF (), sexual libido (14% by week 12), SFA- with sperm motility at 44.4%, and semen volume at 18.2% at the end of treatment. Subjects with BMI 25 kg/m2 significantly improved in fat mass lost (). All safety parameters were comparable to placebo.
