International Journal of Biomedical and Advance Research , 2012, DOI: 10.7439/ijbar.v3i3.338
Abstract: Objective: To determine the differences in efficiency of four desensitizing agents in relieving dentin hypersensitivity in a time period of 2 weeks. Material and methods: 50 participants who responded positively to intraoral testing for dentin hypersensitivity using a split-mouth-designed study were recruited for the study. Sensitivity was assessed by means of thermal and thermal/evaporative stimuli using VAS (visual analogue scale). After recording the baseline scores, the patients were randomly assigned to treatment with the desensitising agents -Clinpro XT varnish (Group I), Gluma power gel (Group II), Bifluoride 12 varnish (Group III) , GC Tooth Mousse plus (Group IV). After 10 minutes the patienta€ s responses was recorded. The follow-up was done after 1week and again after 2 weeks from the time of application of the agents. Results: All the four desensitizing agents were successful in relieving the sensitivity of the patients. Multiple group comparison between groups showed highly significant differences, GroupI showed maximum effectiveness followed by Group IV, Group II,& Group III after 10mins. The effectiveness of agents after 1 week was in the same order. However after 2 weeks it was seen that group I was most effective followed by group II & group IV, with Group III being the least effective. Conclusion: Dental professionals need to understand the causes of dentin hypersensitivity.Once a diagnosis has been made and the factors have been identified a treatment plan can be outlined to the patient for the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity.

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF DENTAL CARIES: A CHANGE IN THERAPEUTIC APPROACH
Amit Malhotra,Mithra N. Hegde
International Research Journal of Pharmacy , 2013,
Abstract: Dental caries is an infectious, communicable disease, which causes destruction of teeth by acid-forming bacteria found in dental plaque. Caries progression or reversal is determined by the balance between protective and pathological factors in the mouth. There have been revolutions in every field and dentistry is no exception to it, these changes have led to a change in concept from the conventional surgical approach of removing dental decay and cutting of tooth structure to the medical model which deals with interception of disease at different stages and possible reversal of the disease process. The key to medical paradigm is determination of caries risk in an individual and effective early detection of initial carious lesions. There are various equipments available in market which uses different principles for diagnosing caries susceptibility in an individual. In the years of thorough research different agents have been investigated for their role in caries prevention and reversal. There is a separate treatment plan for managing patients falling in different risk category. This article outlines the need for the medical management of dental caries and how it can be a viable option in dental decay management.

International Journal of Research in Ayurveda and Pharmacy , 2013, DOI: 10.7897/2277-4343.04226
Abstract: Aim of the study is to evaluate the correlation between dental caries and salivary flow, pH and buffering capacity in young adult South Indian population. According to DMFT scores eighty subjects between 20 to 30 years of age were divided into four groups. Saliva samples collected were estimated for salivary flow, pH and buffering capacity and the data was statistically analysed. The pH, flow rate, buffering capacity showed a steady decrease with an increase in the DMFT values; which was statistically significant. The salivary flow, pH and buffering capacity increases with decrease in caries activity.

International Research Journal of Pharmacy , 2012,
Abstract: Oral ulcers is a very common disorder of the oral mucosa. Patients with signs or symptoms of oral ulcers are sometimes referred to gastroenterology clinics, however, in most instances the ulcers does not reflect gastrointestinal disease, some with a chronic non- healing ulcer are advised biopsy. Indeed, a spectrum of disorders can give rise to oral mucosal ulcers ranging from minor local trauma to significant local disease such as malignancy or systemic illness. Lesions of the tongue have a broad differential diagnosis ranging from benign idiopathic processes to infections, cancers, and infiltrative disorders. This article will focus on common ulcerative disorders of the tongue in aspects of their clinical features and differential diagnosis, two case reports with the diagnosis and conservative management for long-term chronic ulcers. The two cases which are reported in this article had a differential diagnosis of Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. The clinical picture was craterlike lesion, having a velvety-red base and a rolled, indurated border and most important painless in both cases. Removal of the irritant which was the tooth, rehabilitation of the oral mucosa by lubrication with Cocus Nucifera resulted in the healing of the ulcers. Functional components of Cocus Nucifera are Squaline, tocopherol, phytosterols and other sterols which are all plant steroids.

International Research Journal of Pharmacy , 2012,
Abstract: The purpose of the study was to evaluate salivary nitric oxide (NO 2+NO3) as a biomarker of dental caries in adults and to determine the correlation between salivary nitric oxide levels and DMFT index. Eighty healthy adults were divided into two groups: as caries free consisting of 20 individuals and caries active group consisting of 60 individuals. The caries active group was further divided into three subgroups based on the DMFT score (D=decayed, M=missing, F=filled, T=teeth) as follows: Group I (DMFT<3), Group II (DMFT<10) and Group III (DMFT>10), each group consisting of 20 individuals. Saliva collected was estimated for nitric oxide (NO 2+NO3) level by Griess reaction method. One-way ANOVA was used to correlate between concentration of nitric oxide (NO 2+NO3) in saliva and DMFT index in caries free and caries active groups. Results are presented as mean + standard deviation value. The mean level of nitric oxide in saliva of control group was 49.91±15.90 and that of group I, II and III were 32.10±5.91, 32.09±7.61 and 30.14±3.06 respectively. The mean level of nitric oxide (NO 2+NO3) was higher in caries free group when compared to caries active group and was statistically significant and suggests that increased NO production might contribute to lower caries incidence in adults.

International Research Journal of Pharmacy , 2012,
Abstract: An in-vitro study was done to evaluate the effect of fluoride exposure, fluoride release and recharging capability by High strength Glass Ionomer restorative material used with Atraumatic restorative technique. 20 specimens were divided into four groups of five specimens each. The results showed that High strength Glass ionomer cements (Fuji IX) release fluoride, the greatest release takes place between 24- 48 hours.High viscous High Strength Glass ionomer cements have the ability to recharge by external sources like fluoridated dentifrices and varnishes and thus acts as a fluoride reservoir. The recommendation that individuals with a high caries rate and glass ionomer restoration should have fluoride treatment with dentifrice and varnish seems appropriate.

Journal of Conservative Dentistry , 2009,
Abstract: Aims/Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study is to study, measure and compare the microleakage in three different newer direct composite resins using a self-etch adhesive bonding system in class V cavities by fluorescent dye penetration technique. Materials and Methods: Class V cavities were prepared on 45 human maxillary premolar teeth. On all specimens, one coat of G-Bond (GC Japan) applied and light cured. Teeth are then equally divided into 3 groups of 15 samples each. Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE), Ceram X duo (Dentsply Asia) and Synergy D6 (Coltene/Whaledent) resin composites were placed on samples of Groups I, II and III, respectively, in increments and light cured. After polishing the restorations, the specimens were suspended in Rhodamine 6G fluorescent dye for 48 h. The teeth were then sectioned longitudinally and observed for the extent of microleakage under the florescent microscope. Statistical Analysis Used: The results were subjected to statistical analysis using Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney U Test. Results: Results showed no statistically significant difference among three groups tested. Conclusions: None of the materials tested was able to completely eliminate the microleakage in class V cavities.
