Suppression of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. gladioli populations in soil by application of Trichoderma virens and in vitro approaches for understanding biological control mechanisms

Abstract: An isolate of Trichoderma virens was antagonistic to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. gladioli, a pathogen of gladiolus corm rot and wilt. The proliferation and population density of F. oxysporum f. sp. gladioli in the soil was significantly reduced after the incorporation of T. virens. After three weeks, the log colony forming units of F. oxysporum f. sp. gladioli was significantly reduced in T. virens incorporated soil (5.2 log CFU/gm soil) in comparison with control, where it was 6.1 log CFUs. In vitro studies revealed that mechanisms operative in antagonism were competition and antibiosis. A negatively exponential relationship was observed between the amount of T. virens culture filtrate and the growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. gladioli, whereas, there was positive exponential relationships between T. virens culture filtrate and F. oxysporum f. sp. gladioli growth.
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ANTHELMINTIC ACTIVITY BETWEEN ACETONE AND ETHANOLIC STEM BARK EXTRACTS OF SPONDIAS PINNATA (LINN.F) KURZ

Abstract: Spondias Pinnata (Linn.F) Kurz is found in tribal area of Mayurbhanj district and extensively used traditionally by the tribal people as Anthelmintic, Anti-inflammatory, Regulate menstruation, Anti-pyretic, Anti-tumor and Anti-bacterial activity1-6. The present study is attempted to explore the anthelmintic activity of acetone and ethanol extract of bark of plant Spondias Pinnata in a comparative study. The various doses of acetone and ethanol extracts were evaluated for their anthelmintic activities on adult Indian earthworms, Pheretima postuma. All extracts of both the solvents were able to show anthelmintic activity at (10, 25, 50 and 100 mg/ml) concentration. The activities are well comparable with standard drugs, Piperazine citrate and Albendazole (10 mg/ml).All the doses of acetone and ethanol extract of Spondias Pinnata showed better anthelmintic activities than the standard drugs. When the dose of extract is increased, a gradual increase in anthelmintic activity was observed. Ethanol extract showed better anthelmintic activity in comparison to the acetone extract of Spondias Pinnata. The data was verified as statistically significance by using ANOVA at 5% level of significance (P< 0.05).
The Effect of Physics in the Development of Indigenous Technology in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria

Abstract: This study was an attempt to determine empirically the effect of physics in the development of indigenous technology (production of local talking drum and canoe) in Akwa Ibom State. A total of 70 indigenous technologists (40 canoe makers and 30 talking drum makers) from Ikot Abasi, Essien Udim and Ikot Ekpene Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State randomly selected formed the sample for the study. One researcher-made instrument, Physics and Indigenous Technology Questionnaire (PITO) was used in gathering the data for the study. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was 0.86. Three hypotheses were stated to guide the investigation. The data generated in the study were analyzed using t-test at .05 significant level. The findings of the study showed that there is a significant effect of physics in the development of indigenous technology. Findings further revealed that Physics has a significant influence in the making of local talking drums and canoe.
The King-Denborough syndrome in the paediatric patient.

Abstract: King Denborough syndrome is a rare myopathy with characteristic skeletal and craniofacial abnormalities and a susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (MH). We describe the management of two children with a diagnosis of King Denborough syndrome. The first case is that of a 23-month-old term male infant requiring repair of a cleft palate. After flushing the anaesthetic machine, infusions of remifentanil at 0.25 μ/kg/min and propofol at 12 mg/kg/hr were commenced. These were subsequently changed to 0.40 μ/kg/min and 10 mg/kg/hour followed by 8 mg/kg/hour respectively. The case proceeded uneventfully and the patient was managed in the ward postoperatively. The second case was a three-year-old, 5.7kg, former 34-week premature male infant with a dysplastic kidney and hydronephrosis, and recurrent urinary tract infections requiring ureteric re-implantation and repair of the hypospadias. Cardiac echocardiography confirmed the atrial septal defect (ASD: secundum type). Remifentanil and propofol were also used for this case. The patient was fully awake within 10 minutes and managed in the ward postoperatively. These case reports describe the successful use of total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil in paediatric patients who are susceptible to MH.

Abstract: Radiation effects on MHD flow through porous media past an impulsively started vertical oscillating plate with variable mass diffusion is studied here. The fluid considered is gray, absorbing-emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. The governing equations involved in the present analysis are solved by the Laplace-transform technique. The velocity, skin friction, Nusselt number and Sherwood number are studied for different parameters like radiation parameter, Schmidt number, Thermal Grashof number, mass Grashof number, phase angle and time.
Microbiological Safety Assessment of Apple Fruits (Malus domestica Borkh) Sold in Owerri Imo State Nigeria

Abstract: This study aimed at assessing the microbial colonizers, of apple fruits sold in Owerri to determine its safety for consumption. Apple fruits are dependable source of vitamins, it is rich in fiber, electrolytes, minerals and antioxidants and it is usually eaten fresh and raw, making the vitamins fully available for the body. The popularity and increased consumption of apple fruits therefore calls for necessary safety checks. Two hundred fresh and apparently healthy apple fruits were obtained from street vendors and shopping malls in major streets, motor parks and higher institutions in Owerri. The fruits were washed-out separately in 10 mL sterile distilled water to obtain suspensions which were assayed for total aerobic plate count, coliform count, and fungal count and for specific pathogens. A count of 3.4×105-4.5×107 cfu/mL was obtained for TAPC, while total coliform and total fungal counts ranges from 2.4×104-2.2×106 and 5.0×102-3.6×105 cfu/mL respectively. Twelve bacterial and seven fungal spp were isolated. The apple fruits sold in major busy spots in Owerri are contaminated, the presence of Shigella spp, S. aureus, Salmonella and B. cereus which are known pathogens calls for concern. Education of fruit vendors on food hygiene, adequate packaging/covering of apple fruits on display for sale and washing of fruits before consumption is advanced.
A Novel Method of Image Compression Using Multiwavelets and Set Partitioning Algorithm

Abstract: Advances in wavelet transforms and quantization methods have produced algorithms capable of surpassing the existing image compression standards like the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) algorithm. The existing compression methods for JPEG standards are using DCT with arithmetic coding and DWT with Huffman coding. The DCT uses a single kernel where as wavelet offers more number of filters depends on the applications. The wavelet based Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) algorithm gives better compression. For best performance in image compression, wavelet transforms require filters that combine a number of desirable properties, such as orthogonality and symmetry, but they cannot simultaneously possess all of these properties. The relatively new field of multiwavelets offer more design options and can combine all desirable transform features. But there are some limitations in using the SPIHT algorithm for multiwavelets coefficients. This paper presents a new method for encoding the multiwavelet decomposed images by defining coefficients suitable for SPIHT algorithm which gives better compression performance over the existing methods in many cases.

Selection of the Capillary Tubes for Retrofitting in Refrigeration Appliances

Abstract: Retrofitting the refrigeration appliances using the capillary tube is reviewed in this paper. If the refrigerant is changed in the existing system, the COP of the system will be affected. It is necessary to do some modifications in the existing system and retrofit it. Changes in compressor design are too complicated and expensive. Hence modification in capillary tube dimensions is preferred so as to compensate for theperformance of the system.
Inter-cohort growth patterns of pharaoh cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis (Sepioidea: Sepiidae) in Eastern Arabian Sea

Abstract: Sepia pharaonis is an important commercial species endemic to the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Despite its commercial significance, only few information on natural populations is available. This study was aimed to describe the aspects of size-composition, length-weight relationship, catch rates, seasonal recruitment and inter-cohort growth patterns of S. pharaonis population (Clade C), distributed along the Eastern Arabian Sea (South-West coast of India). For this, the Dorsal Mantle Length (DML) and weight of cuttlefishes was obtained from commercial trawl catches, from April 2002 to October 2006. Data was analyzed by normal length-weight methods such as von Bertalanffy. A total of 12 454 cuttlefishes, ranging in length from four to 41cm were analyzed. Size-composition patterns discriminated two pulses in recruitment to the fishery, discernible by a decrease in the monthly mean size of the population. The DMLs of the two seasonal cohorts were subjected to modalprogression analysis using the Bhattacharya’s method for the estimation of growth. The estimated parameters L∞ and K in von Bertalanffy Growth Function (VBGF) were used to model growth curves in length for the cohorts. The first cohort, (post-monsoon cohort) which supports the major fishery, was composed of mediumsized, fast growing individuals, whereas the second cohort (pre-monsoon cohort), comprised of slow growing and large-sized individuals. There were differential growth characteristics between the sexes and the life span was estimated at less than 2.3years for males and 2.1years for females. Negative allometric growth in weight (W) with length (L) was observed for males (W=0.33069.L2.5389) and females (W=0.32542.L2.6057). The females were heavier compared to males at any given mantle length, and the males were found to attain larger ultimate lengths. The major fishing season for cuttlefish was from May to November, when higher monthly catch rates of 1.67-13.02kg/h were observed in comparison with 0.03-0.85kg/h in December-April. Seasonal catch rates indicated a migratory life cycle of S. pharaonis between offshore and inshore coastal zones.
