Abstract: The biathlon is an Olympic sport discipline, which is a combination of two events, Nordic skiing and precision shooting. Combining events of such different psychophysical background creates great demands on the athlete and coach. The main objective of this paper was to determine which of these events has a greater impact on the final result considering the distance and sports level. The results of the World Cup and the Olympic Games in the 2001/02 season were analyzed statistically. The data indicates that the results of the run influence the final result to a higher degree than shooting does. This is especially true in the sprint and in relation to biathletes of higher sports level. At long distances, the level of shooting and the time of the run influence the final result to the same extent. The influence of the time of shooting on the final result is dependent on the distance of the run. Clinical significance of serum levels of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and its tissue inhibitor (TIMP-2) in gastric cancer

Folia Histochemica et Cytobiologica , 2011, DOI: 10.5603/4153
Abstract: Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) is able to degrade type IV collagen, and thus plays a key role in the migration of tumor cells. MMP-2 activity is inhibited by its tissue inhibitor (TIMP-2). The imbalance between MMPs and TIMPs may facilitate progression of cancer cells. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical importance of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 to that of classical tumor markers, namely carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen (CA 19-9) in the diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC) by calculating the diagnostic criteria and estimating the levels of MMP-2, TIMP-2, CEA and CA 19-9 in GC patients in relation to clinicopathological features of cancer. We found that serum levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were significantly lower, whereas serum tumor markers were higher, in GC patients than in healthy subjects. Moreover, concentrations of TIMP-2 and CEA correlated with gastric wall infiltration, while CA 19-9 levels correlated with gastric wall infiltration and the presence of nodal metastasis. None of the proteins tested was found to be an independent prognostic factor for GC patients’ survival. The percentage of true positive results of TIMP-2 (61%) was higher than those of MMP-2 (54%) and the classical tumor markers CEA (21%) and CA 19-9 (31%). The highest diagnostic sensitivity was observed for the combined use of TIMP-2 with MMP-2 (77%). The results suggest the greater importance of serum MMP-2 and TIMP-2 than of the classical tumor markers CEA and CA 19-9 in the diagnosis of GC. But this issue requires further investigation. Journal of Human Kinetics , 2012, DOI: 10.2478/v10078-012-0027-3
Abstract: This paper analyses the dynamics of changes between the performances of elite freestyle swimmers recorded at particular Olympic Games. It also uses a set of chronologically ordered results to predict probable times of swimmers at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The analysis of past performances of freestyle swimmers and their prediction have revealed a number of interesting tendencies within separately examined results of men and women. Women's results improve more dynamically compared with men's. Moreover, the difference between women's and men's results is smaller, the longer the swimming distance. As both male and female athletes tend to compete more and more vigorously within their groups, the gap between the gold medallist and the last finisher in the final is constantly decreasing, which provides significant evidence that this sport discipline continues to develop.
The EPC II Theory. Accounting in Enterprise Business Process Control Systems
Miros aw Zaborowski
Management and Production Engineering Review , 2012, DOI: 10.2478/v10270-012-0008-y
Abstract: The 1 to 1 relationships of charts of accounts, accounting journals and tables of accounting records with corresponding tables of accounts, business transactions and transactional records in the framework EPC II system have been presented in the paper. These tables are the main information kinds, that is tables in which one can write down all information needed for management and business process control in any enterprise, or they are composed of them. In this way it has been shown that the Theory of Enterprise Process Control is compatible with generally accepted accounting principles. This analysis is an example of demonstrating conformity of the EPC II theory with real management and process control systems. The main information kinds with their key attributes were taken from the complete list of them, which is included in the paper. What is more, the tight relationships between resource flow in business processes and turnover on the accounts of the framework EPC II system have been discussed. Owing to these relationships one can determine the impact of any decision variable on the accounting records in a given enterprise.
Examination of the Effect of a Sound Source Location on the Steady-State Response of a Two-Room Coupled System
Miros aw Meissner
Archives of Acoustics , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10168-011-0051-7
Abstract: In this paper, the computer modelling application based on the modal expansion method is developed to study the influence of a sound source location on a steady-state response of coupled rooms. In the research, an eigenvalue problem is solved numerically for a room system consisting of two rectangular spaces connected to one another. A numerical procedure enables the computation of shape and frequency of eigenmodes, and allows one to predict the potential and kinetic energy densities in a steady-state. In the first stage, a frequency room response for several source positions is investigated, demonstrating large deformations of this response for strong and weak modal excitations. Next, a particular attention is given to studying how the changes in a source position influence the room response when a source frequency is tuned to a resonant frequency of a strongly localized mode.
Effect of Cross-Sectional Area Discontinuities in Closed Hard-Walled Ducts on Frequency of Longitudinal Modes
Miros aw Meissner
Archives of Acoustics , 2010, DOI: 10.2478/v10168-010-0034-0
Abstract: A simple analytical method is developed to estimate frequencies of longitudinal modes in closed hard-walled ducts with discontinuities in a cross-sectional area. The approach adopted is based on a general expression for the acoustic impedance for a plane wave motion in a duct and conditions of impedance continuity at duct discontinuities. Formulae for mode frequencies in a form of transcendental equations were found for one, two and three discontinuities in a duct cross-section. An accuracy of the method was checked by a comparison of analytic predictions with calculation data obtained by use of numerical implementation based on the forced oscillator method with a finite difference algorithm.
Elimination of Negative Character Features as an Element of Building a Positive Image of Physical Education Teacher

Polish Journal of Sport and Tourism , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10197-011-0016-4
Abstract: Introduction. In the era of the development of a number of ways and forms of communication, positive image has become an important medium of information, including teacher-student relationships. One can now recognize it as one of the elements of effective implementation of the mandates of teaching and upbringing. The aim of this study was to determine what physical education teacher's features are most undesirable for senior high school students, and thus negatively affect his image. Material and methods. The study used the method of diagnostic survey, in which the questionnaire technique was used. The data obtained from 763 students of two senior high schools (484 females and 279 males) was analyzed. For statistical evaluation of the data the log-linear analysis method was used. Results.Quick temper and severity were found to be the features that the students found to be most undesirable in the physical education teacher. The choice of such features as: compliant, indulgent, moody and quick tempered was significantly dependent on gender (p<0.05), and such as strict, hesitant and distracted, significantly depended on both gender and grade (p<0.05). The school turned out to be a variable that did not differentiate significantly choices made by students. None of the independent variables conditioned the selection of such features as passive and unreliable. Conclusions. Knowing what features should not characterize a physical education teacher is one of the important elements that should be taken into account in the process of building a positive image of teachers. It can be assumed that the elimination or restriction of the expression of these features contributes significantly to the positive perception of teachers, and it is followed by improved relations with students and increased effectiveness of teaching and educational interactions.
