The emergence of a knowledge-based economy has been identified as a central trend in modern economies as a result of the increasingly important role of information technology and learning in economic performance. In recognition of this most governments throughout the developed world have responded with a series of policy initiatives since the late 1990’s to either introduce or significantly increase information technology provision in schools to prepare students for life in the twenty first century. Ireland, with its growing reliance on the knowledge economy sector for employment and continued economic prosperity, developed its own policy initiative for computerizing the nations’ schools known as“Schools IT 2000: A Policy Framework for the New Millennium”. It was an ambitious programme with high expectations for the integration of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in education. This paper examines two longitudinal educational ICT projects in Ireland in the first decade of the new millennium to query how far schools have travelled along the information superhighway and to ponder how well the catalytic capabilities of ICT have become embedded in the realities of classroom life and teachers pedagogic practices, with attendant implications for Ireland’s economic development.

Open Journal of Stomatology (OJST) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojst.2013.31013

The incidence of close and involved tongue resection margins for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) were reviewed with the aim to identify any possible need for change in the surgical approach to glossectomies. The histopathological reports of 101 partial glossectomies for SCC between 2006 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: Overall 52 (51.5%) patients had one or more close or involved margin and 9 (8.9%) had both close and involved margins. 42 (41.5%) patients had close margins and 11 (10.9%) had involved margins. The inferior/lateral muscoal margin was most frequently close/involved (32%) followed by deep margin (27%). The anterior margin was least close/involved (5%). The posterior and superior/medical margins were close/involved in 12% and 11% of cases respectively. Conclusions: 52.5% of patients had close or involved margins following surgery, potentially requiring further treatment to avoid an increased risk of tumour recurrence and the associated increase in morbidity and mortality. The inferior/lateral and deep margins were most frequently involved possible due to the anatomical difficulties visualising and dissecting these margins. The potential explanations for these disparities and possible solutions are discussed.

Abstract: the spatial transformation of metropolitan lima represents an important case study because of the dramatic changes in places where people work, live, and play and the relationships among them. this case study sketches important elements to be considered in the development of metropolitan regions, which are expanding their international links. this article includes also a conceptual review of metropolitan spaces and networks, as well as an empirical assessment of the reorganization of metropolitan activities and networks in lima, which have been driven by the ability of local actors to tap international capital and information
Cultura institucional y homogeneizacion mental: un analisis de impacto en universitarios
Interdisciplinaria , 2005,
Abstract: this study tests hypotheses included in the psycho-sociocommunicational paradigm, which emphasizes the long term cognitive effects of the media and the role of the psychosocial subject as recipient: the hypothesis of agenda-setting. the primary objectives were: (1) to elucidate such effects in audiences with different levels of education, (2) to detect levels of manipulation and homogenization of the mental maps linked with the centralization of the fourth power, to ascertain personality factors which condition differential receptivity of the addresses (filter of the news) related to the socio-evaluative context. two lines interest us: the first emphasizes the effects of the media according to individual psychology, and the second, centered on different parameters linked with psychosocial characteristics of the youths and the messages. finally, the central hypotheses are offered, taking into account that forty nine were considered: (a) there would be a marked correlation between the order of importance assigned to the information by the media and the one adopted by youths (high incidence of mental construing), (b) receptivity of the addresses would vary according to cognitive competence and (c) certain psychological characteristics would render the subject less impressionable to media influence. the sample was made up of graduates (n = 516) and drop-outs from eighteen careers in universidad nacional de cuyo (argentina) between 1980-1993. the sampling was stratified and of random start, confidence interval was taken at 95% and error margin at 4%. quanti-qualitative techniques were complemented: semistructured survey, indepth interviews, life stories and anecdote accounts. also, tests were applied in order to observe the behavior of certain psychosocial variables (such as locus of control, stress, aggressiveness, self-esteem). some of these tests (e.g. cep, j.l. pinillos, maudsley's inventory, j. eysenck) have been validated in argentina by the author. the analysis wa

Abstract: recent research in the history of science and the sociology of knowledge, where science is understood as knowledge in circulation, has called attention to the importance of studying the translation of scientific works, which involves not only the social circumstances of their production but also how these works are received. the testimony presented here was given by the translators of the portuguese version of ludwik fleck's entstehung und entwicklung einer wissenschaftlichen tatsache (genesis and development of a scientific fact), a work that probably influenced thomas kuhn's now classic the structure of scientific revolutions. our goal is to offer resources for understanding fleck's importance in brazilian studies on the circulation of scientific knowledge.
Emilia Snethlage (1868-1929): uma naturalista alem? na Amaz?nia
Junghans, Miriam;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702008000500013
Abstract: the german ornithologist emilia snethlage (1868-1929) spent her scientific career in brazil, working at the museu paraense emilio goeldi in the state of pará and at the museu nacional in rio de janeiro. one of the highlights of her scientific work was her catalog of amazonian birds, published in 1914. another was her travels by foot through the unknown regions between the xingu and tapajós rivers in 1909, accompanied solely by indian guides. to date, the historiography of the sciences in brazil has provided few examples of female engagement in the field of the natural sciences prior to establishment of universities in the 1930s. conjoining issues in women's history with the study of the roles played by this female scientist in institutional and social networks, this analysis of emília snethlage's career can help us better understand little explored fields of historiography.
A possess?o como prática: esbo?o de uma reflex?o fenomenológica
Rabelo, Miriam;
Mana , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-93132008000100004
Abstract: the idea that possession should be treated as a modality of practice has been found in a variety of forms in the works of a number of contemporary anthropologists. this article discusses a series of theoretical points central to understanding possession as practice: the questions of agency, the relations between body and meaning, and temporality. pursuing a phenomenological approach, i attempt to show that any adequate treatment of these three questions requires that we attend to the temporal constitution of practice (in this case, possession). more specifically, i argue that failing to include temporality as a factor may seriously distort our analysis of possession. this thesis is developed through an examination of three case histories of possession in candomblé cults in salvador, bahia.

Abstract: would it be a freudian conception of memory attached to the concept of identity or, on the contrary, would it be the questioning nucleus of any essence that establishes the human subjectivity? historicizing and locating the concept of memory in freud, starting from ribot and bergson, and going through approaches both from philosophers like derrida and lévinas and the post-freudian monique schneider and p. fédida, we show how is the identity notion on the psychoanalytical theory that ends up by needing to be rethought.
