Acylation of Chiral Alcohols: A Simple Procedure for Chiral GC Analysis
Mireia Oromí-Farrús,Mercè Torres,Ramon Canela
Journal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/452949
Abstract: The use of iodine as a catalyst and either acetic or trifluoroacetic acid as a derivatizing reagent for determining the enantiomeric composition of acyclic and cyclic aliphatic chiral alcohols was investigated. Optimal conditions were selected according to the molar ratio of alcohol to acid, the reaction time, and the reaction temperature. Afterwards, chiral stability of chiral carbons was studied. Although no isomerization was observed when acetic acid was used, partial isomerization was detected with the trifluoroacetic acid. A series of chiral alcohols of a widely varying structural type were then derivatized with acetic acid using the optimal conditions. The resolution of the enantiomeric esters and the free chiral alcohols was measured using a capillary gas chromatograph equipped with a CP Chirasil-DEX CB column. The best resolutions were obtained with 2-pentyl acetates (=3.00) and 2-hexyl acetates (=1.95). This method provides a very simple and efficient experimental workup procedure for analyzing chiral alcohols by chiral-phase GC.
Automatic Evaluation for E-Learning Using Latent Semantic Analysis: A Use Case
Mireia Farrús,Marta R. Costa-jussà
International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning , 2013,
Abstract: Assessment in education allows for obtaining, organizing, and presenting information about how much and how well the student is learning. The current paper aims at analysing and discussing some of the most state-of-the-art assessment systems in education. Later, this work presents a specific use case developed for the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, which is an online university. An automatic evaluation tool is proposed that allows the student to evaluate himself anytime and receive instant feedback. This tool is a web-based platform, and it has been designed for engineering subjects (i.e., with math symbols and formulas) in Catalan and Spanish. Particularly, the technique used for automatic assessment is latent semantic analysis. Although the experimental framework from the use case is quite challenging, results are promising.
Preparation of (S)-1-Halo-2-octanols Using Ionic Liquids and Biocatalysts

Molecules , 2009, DOI: 10.3390/molecules14104275
Abstract: Preparation of (S)-1-chloro-2-octanol and (S)-1-bromo-2-octanol was carried out by the enzymatic hydrolysis of halohydrin palmitates using biocatalysts. Halohydrin palmitates were prepared by various methods from palmitic acid and 1,2-octanediol. A tandem hydrolysis was carried out using lipases from Candida antarctica (Novozym? 435), Rhizomucor miehei (Lipozyme IM), and “resting cells” from a Rhizopus oryzae strain that was not mycotoxigenic. The influence of the enzyme and the reaction medium on the selective hydrolysis of isomeric mixtures of halohydrin esters is described. Novozym? 435 allowed preparation of (S)-1-chloro-2-octanol and (S)-1-bromo-2-octanol after 1–3 h of reaction at 40 °C in [BMIM][PF6].

Revealing the molecular relationship between type 2 diabetes and the metabolic changes induced by a very-low-carbohydrate low-fat ketogenic diet

Abstract: Our systemic approach is based on the creation and analyses of the cell networks representing the metabolic state in a very-low-carbohydrate low-fat ketogenic diet. This global view might help identify unnoticed relationships often overlooked in molecule or process-centered studies.A strong relationship between the insulin resistance pathway and the ketosis main pathway was identified, providing a possible explanation for the improvement observed in clinical trials. Moreover, the map analyses permit the formulation of some hypothesis on functional relationships between the molecules involved in type 2 diabetes and induced ketosis, suggesting, for instance, a direct implication of glucose transporters or inflammatory processes. The molecular network analysis performed in the ketogenic-diet map, from the diabetes perspective, has provided insights on the potential mechanism of action, but also has opened new possibilities to study the applications of the ketogenic diet in other situations such as CNS or other metabolic dysfunctions.Efforts to link metabolic status or diseases by using simple, schematic biological pathways seldom offer the possibility to view the "broad picture", and are rarely able to explain the richness of the complex, redundant, intricate and sometimes blurry nature of human metabolism. Recently, the concept of "Diseaseome" [1] has arisen, as an essay to conceptualize at the highest level the relationship between observed phenotypes and underlying molecular and physiological disease mechanisms or disease cures. Although they are often treated separately, most human diseases are not independent of each other. Many diseases are associated with the breakdown of functional modules (subnetworks) of a complex network connecting many cellular components. Therefore, an understanding of the functionally relevant genetic, regulatory, metabolic and protein-protein interactions will play an important role in understanding the pathophysiology of human diseases

Fritz Vogelgsang: Salvador Esprius übersetzer ins Deutsche [Fritz Vogelgsang: The translator of Salvador Espriu into German]
Farrés, Ramon
Zeitschrift für Katalanistik , 2010,
Abstract: Salvador Espriu’s bilingual (Catalan-German) publication of his complete poetical works by the Zurich publishing house Amman marks a historic moment in the reception of Catalan literature in German-speaking countries. It also represents the apex of the penetration of Espriu in the German literary system, a process which began in 1970. This article looks at this process in detail, focusing on Fritz Vogelgsang, author of the German version of the complete poetical works. A study of the texts is carried out, departing from the translator’s own comments, a comparison with other versions, and the appraisal found in German reviews.
Las amenazas globales del siglo XXI
Avilés Farré, Juan
Arbor : Ciencia, Pensamiento y Cultura , 2005,

Fractal design for efficient brittle plates under gentle pressure loading
R. S. Farr
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevE.76.046601
Abstract: We consider a plate made from an isotropic but brittle elastic material, which is used to span a rigid aperture, across which a small pressure difference is applied. The problem we address is to find the structure which uses the least amount of material without breaking. Under a simple set of physical approximations and for a certain region of the pressure-brittleness parameter space, we find that a fractal structure in which the plate consists of thicker spars supporting thinner spars in an hierarchical arrangement gives a design of high mechanical efficiency.
