Enzyme Inhibition Effect and Polyphenolic Content of Medicinal Plant Extracts from Burkina Faso

Abstract: In the present study, 36 plant extracts, belonging to 6 families from Burkina Faso were used to evaluate their glutathione-S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CES) and xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activities and their phenolic, tannin and flavonoids contents by using spectrophotometrical methods. At 100 μg mL-1, Lippia chevalieri, Eclipta prostrata, Lantana camara and Indigofera pulchra extracts showed the best percentage of inhibition by regulating GST, AChE, CES and XO activities, respectively. The phytochemical investigations showed that all plant extracts were rich in biological compounds, namely phenolic, tannin and flavonoids. Particularly Cassia mimosoides extract presented the best phenolic, tannin and flavonoid contents. This result indicated that phenolic from Ceasalpiniaceae, flavonoids from Combretaceae and tannin from Verbenaceae contribute significantly to the inactivation of CES, AchE and GST, respectively. However, no significant correlation was found between polyphenolic compounds content and XO inhibitory activity. Present findings could partially justify the traditional uses of these plants in the treatment of mental disorders, gout, painful inflammations and cardiovascular diseases.
Evaluation of Enzymes Inhibition Activities of Medicinal Plant from Burkina Faso

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate some enzymes inhibitory effects of 11 plant species belonging to 9 families from Burkina Faso. Methanolic extracts were used for their Glutathione-s-transferase (GST), Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), Carboxylesterase (CES) and Xanthine Oxidase (XO) inhibitory activities at final concentration of 100 μg mL-1. The total phenolics, flavonoids and tannins were also determined spectrophotometrically using Folin-Ciocalteu, AlCl3 and ammonium citrate iron reagents, respectively. Among the 11 species tested, the best inhibitory percentages were found with Euphorbia hirta, Sclerocarya birrea and Scoparia dulcis (inhibition>40%) followed by Annona senegalensis, Annona squamosa, Polygala arenaria and Ceratotheca sesamoides (inhibition>25%). The best total phenolic and tannin contents were found with S. birrea with 56.10 mg GAE/100 mg extract and 47.75 mg TAE/100 mg extract, respectively. E hirta presented the higher total flavonoids (9.96 mg QE/100 mg extract). It's was found that Sclerocarya birrea has inhibited all enzymes at more than 30% and this activity is correlated to total tannins contents. Contrary to S. birrea, the enzymatic activities of E. hirta and S. dulcis are correlated to total flavonoids contents. Present findings suggest that the methanolic extracts of those plant species are potential inhibitors of GST, AChE, CES and XO and confirm their traditional uses in the treatment of mental disorders, gout, painful inflammations and cardiovascular diseases.
Intégration des Tice et apprentissage de l'enseignement : une approche systémique Integrating technology and learning to teach: a systemic perspective

Abstract: De nombreuses études soulignent à quel point il est complexe d'analyser les changements pédagogiques entra nés par l'intégration des Tice. Cette recherche-action tente d'analyser de fa on systémique les interrelations qu'entretient l'intégration des Tice avec les changements pédagogiques dans le cadre d'un programme de formation d'enseignants en langues étrangères au sein d'une grande université américaine. Le cadre théorique nous permettra tout d'abord de délimiter une perspective systémique et de présenter notre conception de l'intégration des Tice et de l'apprentissage. Puis, nous présenterons notre étude et en résumerons les principaux résultats afin d'illustrer la complexité d'une telle relation. Many studies underline how difficult it is to analyse the pedagogical changes caused by the integration of technology. This action research aims to analyse, from a systemic point of view, the interrelations that exist between the integration of technology and pedagogical change. The study took place in a foreign and second language teacher education program at a large American university. First, we will define a systemic perspective as well as the concepts of technology integration and learning. Then, to illustrate the complexity of such relationship, we will describe our study and summarize the main results.
Accessing and analysing online interactions: The case of ViCoDiLi

Abstract: This article focuses on the traces of interactions between students and tutors during an online training. We examine both, the issues of access to these traces as well as their manipulation by the researcher. This reflection was guided by the need to access the data of an online course that became unavailable at some point. This challenge resulted in the development of a tool called Visualizing the Content of Online Interactions (ViCoDiLi) that enables both the access to the formatted traces of online interactions (forum, chat and email), and their examination with diverse display features. The project aimed at providing tools for the researcher's activities. The objective is to provide both a model of data access and tools to assist the data corpus analysis. This article highlights the theoretical, technical and methodological issues raised by the development of such a tool.
Pre-service Teachers’ Beliefs Related to English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language: Where is the Difference?

Abstract: This article reports the findings of a qualitative case study examining the knowledge base held by English language teacher candidates enrolled in two university pre-service programs in Lebanon and Canada. Through an examination of blog postings and the data collected through semi-structured interviews, eight Canadian and eleven Lebanese respondents were polled while taking courses focusing on second language teaching methodology. Based on our findings, we argue that what teacher candidates know about their field of expertise is communal, contextually bounded and uniquely rooted in their experiences within and outside their pre-service programs. Moreover, the multitude of beliefs shared by these two groups of pre-service teachers demonstrate that there is indeed a universal knowledge base associated with the teaching of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL). However, we have also found significant differences between these fields based on specific and local contexts.
Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Five Verbenaceae Species from Burkina Faso

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and the antibacterial activities of methanol extracts from five species from Verbenaceae family and to quantify their polyphenols. Two methods i.e., FRAP and DPPH were used to estimate the total antioxidant capacity of the plants materials. Antibacterial activity was measured on serotyped bacteria (4) and pathogenic bacteria (13) using the solid agar dishes diffusion method. Polyphenolic quantification was measured using Folin-Ciocalteu, ammonium citrate iron and AlCl3 reagents, respectively. Fe (III) to iron (II) reducing activity show to be relate to tannins content and the radical scavenging activity by total phenolic and total flavonols. As a whole Duranta erecta L. gave a better antioxidant activity (FRAP: 15.03 mmol EAA/g and IC50: 7.88 mmol EAA/g). The best antimicrobial activity was obtained by Duranta erecta L. (22.33 mm) at a concentration of 25 μg/mL. This result was obtained on Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus épidermidis. The results obtained in this study showed an interesting antioxidant activity of Duranta erecta L. This plant also presented the best antibacterial activity particularly on Staphylococcus épidermidis, among the five species of Verbenaceae family. Our findings could partially justify the traditional uses of these plants as indicated in the literature.

Extremely Early Diagnostic Test for Prostate Cancer  [PDF]

Abstract: Purpose: This article reports the results of a blinded fibre diffraction study of skin samples taken from TRAMP mice and age-matched controls to determine whether changes noted in fibre diffraction studies of human skin were present in these TRAMP mice studies. These mice are bred to progress to Gleeson Type 3 to Type 5 prostate cancer. Methods: Small strips, 1 mm × 5 mm, cut from the mouse skin samples were loaded into cells in the same way as human samples and slightly stretched to remove the crimp. They remained fully hydrated throughout exposure to the synchrotron beam. Results: The added change that was reported for prostate cancer in 2009 was obtained for all TRAMP mice samples, indicating that this change can be read as High Grade Cancer in human diagnostic tests. Discussion: These changes were evident for all 3 and 7 week old TRAMP mice samples but not for any of the control samples. This indicates that the changes in the fibre diffraction patterns appear much earlier than in any other available prostate cancer diagnostic test, as none of these can verify the presence of prostate cancer in the TRAMP mice before 10 weeks of age. The fibre diffraction test is therefore the most accurate and earliest test for high grade prostate cancer.

Abstract: This paper explores the effects of trade policy under induced innovation in general equilibrium. The analysis considers the effects of discrete changes in tariffs and import quotas, allowing for heterogeneous technologies among firms. The interactions between induced innovation and the effects of trade policy give a set of “LeChatelier effects” comparing short run versus long run market equilibrium. We investigate how induced innovation can reduce the adverse effects of tariffs on trade, and influence the effects of quotas on corresponding quota rents. The analysis presents new LeChatelier results that apply globally, i.e. under any discrete change in trade policy.

Three months before his untimely death in Paris in July 1912, Henri Poincaré formulated the conjecture that Planck’s action element could (should) be regarded as constituting a “véritable atome”, i.e. an “atom of motion”, whose integrity arises from the fact that the “points” it contains are equivalent to one another from the standpoint of probability. In this paper we investigate the possibility that this conjecture provides a clue to the origin and nature of dark matter.
