Expanding the open innovation concept: the case of TOTVS S / A
Rodrigues, Leonel Cezar;Maccari, Emerson Antonio;Campanario, Milton de Abreu;
JISTEM - Journal of Information Systems and Technology Management , 2010, DOI: 10.4301/S1807-17752010000300011
Abstract: the aim of this study is the process of open innovation in the growth development of a technology-based company. we used the case study method to research totvs, a company that is the largest producer of information systems in latin america, for medium and small businesses, as an illustrative case to support the evidences of new approaches to implement the open innovation processes. the main conclusions regarding the expansion of the open innovation concept can be seen taking the following distinct factors into account: (a) technological dominion, not business protection, is the main motivator for acquisition of external technologies, directly or through other enterprises acquisition, (b) adherence to technological footprint is the main inducer of the open innovation processes, (c) market pull technologies determines the length and range of technological dominion, and (d) incremental instead of radical type of innovation would be the preferred way to implement the open innovation process.

Laprega, Milton Roberto;Man?o, Amábile Rodrigues Xavier;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1999000300008
Abstract: the authors studied 33,494 deaths occurring in londrina, state of paraná, brazil, from 1936 to 1982. the deaths were divided into two groups: residents and invaders, who lived outside the londrina municipal limits. invaders were studied as to origin, place of occurrence, cause, and diagnostic confirmation and compared with residents across proportional mortality. an attempt was made to identify a relationship between invaders' deaths and londrina's historical development, especially migratory phenomena and health care improvements. results showed that over the course of the period studied, most of the outsiders who had died in londrina (over 80%) were from northern paraná. identification of the proportion of in-hospital deaths, diagnostic confirmation, and criteria from several chapters of the international classification of diseases showed that outsiders had received proportionally more medical care. londrina's medical care attracted outsiders from the beginning of the period onward, a trend that was further consolidated after 1970.

Training Needs of International Medical Graduates [IMGs] in Psychiatry  [PDF]
Milton Kramer
Open Journal of Psychiatry (OJPsych) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ojpsych.2014.44036
Abstract: The potential shortage of psychiatrists over the next 5 - 10 years has focused attention on the need to recruit more IMGs to fill the needs rather than use nurse practitioners or physician assistants. IMGs make up about 1/3 of first year psychiatry residents. These individuals have been found to provide services to the poor, the elderly and the psychotic. The quality of their medical work has been found to be satisfactory. The training needs of these physicians require an understanding on the part of their teachers that they come from cultures with different values that we have. The extended families of these primarily Asian residents clash with our strong commitment to individualism. It leads to a We-self rather than our I-Self. This difference coupled with the stress of leaving to come to a new culture is a great stress. Their exposure to psychiatry has been limited. They request and need more interview demonstration and practice, ore feedback and examinations. They should have help in accent reduction. They should be exposed to the working of the hospital by sitting on departmental and hospital committees. The faculty should extend their social opportunities and work as mentors on joint projects. Courses on the history of American culture should be taught. Psychotherapy for them should be encouraged as well as teaching medical ethics. They must become the major educational concern for the department that they are in.
Aramendiz-Tatis, Hermes;Sudré, Cláudia P;Gon?alves, Leandro SA;Rodrigues, Rosana;
Horticultura Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-05362011000200007
Abstract: we evaluated 24 genotypes (hybrids, cultivars and landraces) of eggplant related to yield traits in the colombian caribbean region, to quantify the genetic divergence among these genotypes and to indicate possible crosses. with the results of the genetic diversity and agronomic traits we intend to initiate a program of eggplant breeding in that region. a randomized block design with three replications was used. the analyzed variables were fruit length, number of fruits per plant, mean fruit weight, yield, fruit firmness and plant height. the data were submitted to variance analysis and the averages grouped by scott-knott test. a multivariate analysis was also performed using different methods of hierarchical clustering and canonical variables. there was high divergence among the studied genotypes even when considered within hybrids, cultivars and landraces, with highest variability among the cultivars and hybrids followed by the landraces. the upgma method was more reliable than ward and single linkage methods since upgma presented greater value of cophenetic correlation coefficient (ccc). using pseudo-f and pseudo-t2 criteria the maximum point was reached when four clusters were formed, being considered the ideal number of groups for the upgma. there was agreement among the groups formed for upgma analysis and canonic variables. crosses between cc08 x cc02; cc08 x eu01 and cc08 x c016 may be recommended to start an eggplant breeding program aiming to improve yield and fruit firmness.

Biotemas , 2010,
Abstract: From the groups causing myiasis, the genus Philornis Meinert, 1890 appears as the only representative of the family Muscidae, obligatorily associated with birds. Thus, the aim of this work was to report the occurrence of Philornis in Thalurania glaucopis (Trochilidae). Two parasitized nestlings of T. glaucopis were encountered in May of 2008, in an area with a high degree of degradation in the municipal district of Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro. A total of 11 larvae were located intradermically in the regions of the head and neck. The larvae were removed using tweezers and placed in a plastic container with sawdust, in order to await the emergence of the adult. Only seven larvae completed metamorphosis and reached the adult stage, being identified as Philornis glaucinis. This study presented the first record of P. glaucinis in the state of Rio de Janeiro and also the first occurrence of this parasite in nestlings of T. glaucopis.
