Laparoscopic liver resections are gaining adherents among surgeons, as they show rapid recovery, shorter hospital stay and better cosmetic results. The use of a laparoscopic radiofrequency device was first carried out successfully in Brazil for resection of hepatocellular carcinoma of the segment VI in two cirrhotic patients. Although intraoperative bleeding remains a major challenge for the surgeon during laparoscopic liver resections, in both cases the hepatic vascular exclusion was expendable and there was no need for blood transfusion. Patients were discharged on the fourth postoperative day.
Evaluation of pH, solubility and marginal leakage in retrobturation cases using Sealer 26 alone or with iodoform

RSBO , 2010,
Abstract: Introduction: Sealer 26 cement contains bisphenol epoxy resin associated with calcium hydroxide, presenting smaller radiopacity than other endodontic cements.Aiming to improve this property, iodoform has been added in its composition. However, this addition’s possible changes in physical and chemical properties still need to be studied. Objective: To evaluate the apical sealing ability, solubility, and pH of Sealer 26 alone or with iodoform, at several proportions. Material and methods: Three experimental mixtures of Sealer 26 , alone or with iodoform, were prepared and subjected to solubility test. Additionally, these combinations were inserted into polyethylene tubes and immersed in distilled water, and, their pH was evaluated after 24-h and 7-day periods. Subsequently, forty roots of extracted lower incisors subdivided into four groups of 10 specimens each, were retrograde filled with one of the previously described mixtures and gutta-percha points. The roots were immersed in Rhodamine B, under vacuum, for 72 hours. After this period, the specimens were longitudinally sectioned, root fragments photographed, these images scanned, and apical infiltration measured by Image tool software. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis, at a significance level of 5%. Results: Marginal leakage and solubility tests did not show any difference among the experimental groups (p > 0.05). pH analysis was only statistically different at 24-h period and between Sealer 26 alone and 1.1g iodoform group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The presence of iodoform in Sealer 26 , at the used proportions, did not alter the solubility, apical marginal leakage and pH properties of the original cement.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of three rotary instrument systems (k3, protaper and twisted file) in removing calcium hydroxide residues from root canal walls. thirty-four human mandibular incisors were instrumented with the protaper system up to the f2 instrument, irrigated with 2.5% naocl followed by 17% edta, and filled with a calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing. after 7 days, the calcium hydroxide dressing was removed using the following rotary instruments: g1 - niti size 25, 0.06 taper, of the k3 system; g2 - niti f2, of the protaper system; or g3 - niti size 25, 0.06 taper, of the twisted file system. the teeth were longitudinally grooved on the buccal and lingual root surfaces, split along their long axis, and their apical and cervical canal thirds were evaluated by sem (×1000). the images were scored and the data were statistically analyzed using the kruskall wallis test. none of the instruments removed the calcium hydroxide dressing completely, either in the apical or cervical thirds, and no significant differences were observed among the rotary instruments tested (p > 0.05).
Instrumentos de avalia??o de qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde no diabetes melito

Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia & Metabologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27302008000600004
Abstract: the assessment of health-related quality of life (hrqol) has been increasingly used to measure the overall impact of diseases in people's life. diabetes mellitus (dm) is a chronic disease associated with high morbidity, mortality, and hrqol impairment in patients. in longitudinal studies, the psychosocial impact of dm predicts mortality. the objective of this review is to describe and to analyze the main instruments used for the hrqol evaluation in patients with dm. generic instruments such, as the quality of well-being scale (qwb), medical outcomes study 36-item short-form health survey (sf-36), euroqol (eq-5d) and specific instruments as the diabetes care profile (dcp), diabetes quality of life measure (dqol), diabetes impact measurement scales (dims), appraisal of diabetes scale (ads), audit of diabetes-dependent quality of life (addqol), diabetes health profile (dhp-1 and dhp-18), questionnaire on stress in patients with diabetes-revised (qsd-r), well-being enquiry goes diabetics (wed), diabetes-specific quality-of-life scale (dsqols), diabetes 39 (d-39) problems areas in diabetes (paid) were analyzed. paid is the only translated and validated instrument available in brazil. the generic and specific instruments have their stregths and shortcomings for evaluation of hrql in patients with dm. the combined use of both generic (such as the sf-36) and specific (such as the paid) appears to be a consistent way to evaluate hrqol as a construct in brazilian patients with dm. the present article reviews a variety of instruments and emphasizes the urgent need for validation studies of such instruments to be used in brazilian subjects with dm.

Abstract: the graphic obtained by acoustic rhinometry in caucasian adult individuals with no nasal affections clearly shows two notches at the beginning of the nasal echogram. however, there are controversies in the literature concerning their anatomic correlation. aim: the aim of this study was to obtain data that would contribute to the anatomic correlation of these two notches. study design: clinical prospective. material and method: we analyzed the nasal echogram of 35 volunteers in basal conditions, after decongestion and after obstruction of the nasal valve by using cotton impregnated with vaseline. results: we identified statistically significant reduction and increase of the cross-sectional area only for the second notch after obstruction of the nasal valve and after decongestion, respectively. conclusion: the analysis of the results suggested that the first notch of the nasal echogram refers to the nostril and the second notch refers to the nasal valve as a whole.
