To evaluate the flexibility of the posterior muscle chain using the method proposed by Wells and Dillon, before and after each hydrotherapy session. The study verified the flexibility of three children with diplegic cerebral palsy (CP), aged 7 to 10. The values of flexibility were measured using the Wells’ Flexometer. There was a significant increase in the flexibility of posterior muscle chain of the patients after each session of hydrotherapy, both in the individual evaluation and in the group, as well as before the first session of hydrotherapy compared to the last. The study suggests that hydrotherapy promotes the improvement of flexibility, by relaxation of muscle tone of children with diplegic CP, in relation to the posterior muscle chain, when combined with passive stretching exercises.
Designing universal primers for the isolation of DNA sequences encoding Proanthocyanidins biosynthetic enzymes in Crataegus aronia

BMC Research Notes , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1756-0500-5-427
Abstract: Different bioinformatics tools, including BLAST, multiple sequence alignment and alignment PCR analysis were used to design primers suitable for the amplification of DNA fragments from 10 candidate genes encoding enzymes involved in PAs biosynthesis in C. aronia. DNA sequencing results proved the utility of the designed primers. The primers were used successfully to amplify DNA fragments of different PAs biosynthesis genes in different Rosaceae plants. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first use of the alignment PCR approach to isolate DNA sequences encoding PAs biosynthetic enzymes in Rosaceae plants.Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) is a member of the Rosaceae family, belonging to the Spiraeoideae subfamily in the Pyroidae supertribe in the Pyreae subtribe [1]. There are approximately 280 species in the genus Crataegus, which are widely distributed across the Mediterranean, North Africa, Europe, Central and Eastern Asia and North America [2]. In the eastern Mediterranean region, the predominant Crataegus species is C. aronia L., which is found on dry hillsides, mountains and in areas receiving more than 300?mm annual rainfall [3].In folk medicine, a decoction of Crataegus leaves and unripe fruits has been used to treat disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and impotence [2,4]. The medicinal properties of Crataegus are primarily related to its antioxidant activities and the reduction of free radical-induced oxidative stress [5,6], mediated by secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (PAs), ethanobotanical and ethanopharmacological compounds [7].PAs, also known as condensed tannins, are polyphenolic compounds formed as a branch of the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway [8]. PAs are found in the fruits, bark, leaves and seeds of many plants including Crataegus[2,9] and their function include defense against herbivores and resistance to abiotic stresses [9]. They are also important quality components of many fruits, pro
Failure to launch?: The women?s movement struggle for abortion decriminalization in the Portuguese Parliament (1982)
Prata,Ana;
Ex aequo , 2012,
Abstract: in 1982, the communist party presented a proposed law on abortion decriminalization and the women’s movement tactics converged at parliamentary members. despite that, we know little about this contested political process and the attempts for legal change that occurred from the interaction between activists, double-militants, and mps. findings show that women’s organizations remained as ‘outsiders’ and excluded from the political process, but that most of their preferred framings were put forward by their few political allies. the ?failure? to pass abortion reform in 1982 cannot overshadow what the debate ultimately represented - a precursor of the approval of abortion decriminalization in parliament just two years later, in 1984.

Abstract: sterior segment causes of reduced visual acuity after phacoemulsification in eyes with cataract and obscured fundus view Original Research (1220) Total Article Views Authors: Jammal HM, Khader Y, Shawer R, Al Bdour M Published Date November 2012 Volume 2012:6 Pages 1843 - 1848 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.2147/OPTH.S38303 Received: 19 September 2012 Accepted: 10 October 2012 Published: 08 November 2012 Hisham M Jammal,1,3 Yousef Khader,2 Riham Shawer,3 Muawyah Al Bdour4 1Department of Ophthalmology, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan; 2Department of Community Medicine, Public Health and Family Medicine, Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid, Jordan; 3Department of Ophthalmology, King Abdullah University Hospital, Irbid, Jordan; 4Department of Ophthalmology, The University of Jordan, Amman, Jordan Purpose: To determine posterior segment causes of reduced visual acuity after phacoemulsification in eyes with cataract and obscured fundus view. Patients and methods: Retrospective review of medical records of patients with cataract, obscured fundus view, and normal B-scan ultrasonography, undergoing phacoemulsification from May 2005 to March 2012 was conducted. Eyes with fundus pathology, previous trauma, surgery, glaucoma, amblyopia, or uveitic cataract were excluded. Ocular comorbid conditions, preoperative visual acuity (VA), intraoperative and early postoperative complications, and final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 1 month were abstracted from the records. Results: All 201 eyes of 179 patients studied had a preoperative VA of ≤6/60. Preoperative ocular comorbidity was present in 31 eyes (15.5%). Intraoperative complications occurred in 20 eyes (10%). Postoperative complications developed in 34 eyes (17.0%). One month postoperatively, 175 eyes (87.1%) achieved a BCVA of ≥6/12; whereas 26 eyes (12.9%) achieved a BCVA of ≤6/18. The most common posterior segment causes of reduced VA in the 26 eyes were age-related macular disease in ten eyes (38.5%) and diabetic maculopathy in six eyes (23.1%). Similar fundus pathology was seen preoperatively in the fellow fundus in 10 of the 26 eyes (38.5%). Conclusion: One month after phacoemulsification in eyes with cataract and obscured fundus view, age-related macular disease and diabetic maculopathy were the most common posterior segment causes of reduced final BCVA. To avoid postsurgical dissatisfaction, patients with obscured fundus view in their preoperative eye should be counseled, especially if posterior segment pathology exists in their fellow eye.
