Abstract: the purpose of this study is to identify methodologies of vigilance and-hospital infection control, to analyze nurse's actuation in the context of hospital infection control and to associate nurse's actuation on the control of hospital infection and the execution of nursing process. it is an analytic-descriptive study developed at 81 commissions of hospital infection control (ccih) at school hospitals from 21 brazilian states through a questionnaire, the variables studied were: characteristics and functioning of ccih; criteria to diagnose hospital infection; methods of data collection; types of epidemiological vigilance, prevention and control measures and nurse's participation. the analysis of data was qualitative and quantitative. the results showed that in the collection of data prevailed general vigilance (66, 6%) and the association of passive and active methods (48, 4%); 67 ccih mentioned measures of prevention and control, related to urinary tract (54 ccih) and to respiratory tract (21 ccih). the antimicrobian control distinguishing the lack of resonance between the ccih and the units personnel brings to the conclusion that the problems of hospital infection control are, in their essence, of philosophical, educational or administrative character. authors evidenced the importance of the implementation of methodologies to facilitate the control of hospital infection, indicating that the adoption of nursing process, as an instrument, can result in benefits to ccih and to patients,

Abstract: cockroaches carry microorganisms to sterilized materials, equipment and non-contaminated food in hospitals and in homes. hence, they are regarded as major microbial vectors. we isolated and identified microorganisms from living cockroaches captured from a brazilian health care institution and we determined the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of the isolates. following collection, cockroaches were immobilized at 4oc for 10 to 20 minutes, immersed in 0.8% saline solution and then homogenized. next, the suspension was seeded in culture media: brain and heart agar infusion, macconkey agar, naito agar, and they were incubated for up to 48 hours at 37oc. sabouraud agar cultures were incubated at ambient temperature. the microbial colonies were analyzed with a stereomicroscope to count and phenotypically identify the colony-forming units (cfu). the discdiffusion method was used to determine the profile of susceptibility to antimicrobials. among the 103 cockroaches analyzed, fungi were found in 97%, enterobacteria in 74.6% and coagulase-negative staphylococci (cns) in 25.40%. among the enterobacteria, 96% were resistant to gentamicin, 84% to ampicillin, 75.3% to caphalothin, 66.7% to ampicillin-sulbactam, 50% to aztreonam and 30% to chloramphenicol. among the cns, 61% were resistant to oxacillin. we concluded that cockroaches carry organisms associated with nosocomial infections and that are resistant to antimicrobials. this fact contributes to the epidemiological chain, complicating therapeutics, and consequently, medical costs are increased.

Abstract: in this experimental study we compared the previous descontamination efficacy of the medical surgical materials by the use of chemical disinfectants and the mechanical cleaning with water and soap, as well as verified the organic material interference in these procedures. to carry out this study, we used surgical pincers under contamination with: staphylococcus aureus atcc-6538, salmonella cholerae suis atcc-10708, and pseudomonas aeruginosa atcc-15442 in presence and absence of organic matter (fetal bovine serum). the following treatments: glutaraldehyde 2%, sodium hypochlorite 1%, hydrogen peroxide 6%, alcohol 70% and the mechanical cleaning with water and soap were compared with eight repetitions in a total of 480 observations. in the described conditions, the disinfectants had a good efficacy in the previous descontamination of the medical surgical materials and a less inativation by the organic material. the mechanical cleaning with water and soap showed a reduction of the microrganism to safe levels, considered adequate for previous descontamination.

Abstract: Exploratory research, in a quantitative approach, carried out in Pediactrs Hospitals with the following objectives: identify in literature the publications about Peripheric Intermittent Intravenous Device - PIID, with their respective approach; describe the technique of utilization of PIID in the Pediatrics Institutions of Goiania and analyze the intervening factors to the use of PIID and its implications in nurse performances. The data when collected by questionnaires previously tested. In the first time we went through the existent publications about PIID; in second time that identified the Hospital Institutions which used the PIID and they did it. We came to the conclusion that there are few specific studies about PIID and those which approach the theme do it in a very general way, leaving out many questions about the subject. From the total of seventy existent Pediatrics Institutions, only two use the PIID and even those not systematically. We observed that the medical and nurse staff use the technique without any protocol, and each professional prescribes and performs the procedure in his own adequate way. The most common solution used to maintain the catheter permeable to the heparin; however, it doesn't exist consensus in relation to the proper concentration or even to the storage of the solution. Thus, we suggest research to be in the others contexts, with the objective of simplifying the technique, publishing it in order to make it safer for those who want to use it.
