Abstract: introduction: video-capsule enteroscopy has revolutionized the diagnosis of small bowel pathology in the last 10 years. in our hospital, this technique was introduced in early 2006. objectives: review our experience of the first 5 years of using this technique, analyzing the indications, diagnosis, complications and limitations of a sample of everyday clinical practice. methods : we reviewed retrospectively our experience collecting data, indications, diagnosis and complications of every exams performed between january 2006 and december 2010 following by a descriptive statistical analysis of data obtained. results: there were 528 examinations in 488 patients (56% women) with mean age 60 ± 19 [14-95] years. transit times in the stomach and small bowel were 34.6 ± 49.6 [0-480] and 252.3 ± 87.7 [15-530] minutes. the cecum was not achieved in 13% of cases (due to recording limit in 10.4%). main indications for examination were obscure gastrointestinal bleeding (70.3%, 2/3 iron deficiency anemia) and crohn’s disease (14.6%, almost 2/3 suspected). the percentage of findings was 70% in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, with no important difference between the visible and occult forms, although more relevant findings reported in the visible form. angiectasies were diagnosed in 50.6% and erosions/ulcers in 32% of all cases of hdo. in 13.7% of cases the cause could be attributed to injury within the reach of conventional endoscopy. the percentage of findings was 32% in suspected crohn’s disease. there were two retentions due to small bowel stenosis which required surgery. discussion : video-capsule enteroscopy is safe and has high detection rate of lesions, particularly in patients with obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, even in an everyday clinical practice and predominance of iron deficiency anemia. there is a high percentage of lesions within reach of the endoscope and there should be a low threshold for repeating the conventional endoscopy. in suspected crohn’s disease t

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1909, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761909000200008

We’ll try to inquire whether this type of message in uences people’s behavior, increasing the practice of healthy eating habits and physical exercises.

Abstract: spodoptera frugiperda (j e smith) is an important pest of several crops, but especially on maize in brazil. the implementation of biological control measures hinges on the identification of its predators and other natural enemies. as a means of identifying predators, antibodies against s. frugiperda eggs were generated by inoculating rabbits with macerated s. frugiperda eggs, and the production of antibodies against s. frugiperda egg proteins was verifi ed by double immunodiffusion (did). these antibodies were then utilized in another serological technique, counterimmunoeletrophoresis (cie), to identify insects that could have ingested s. frugiperda eggs. macerates of entire insects collected in maize plantations and of individual parts of their digestive tract, including the crop, were the source of antigens in the cie, while predators fed s. frugiperda eggs in the laboratory served as the control. antibodies produced by the inoculated rabbits were effective in detecting s. frugiperda egg proteins, especially if crop macerates were used as antigens. among the species of insects collected from maize plantations, lagria villosa fabricius (coleoptera: lagriidae) and a species of lygaeidae (hemiptera) were identified as possible s. frugiperda predators.

Abstract: introduction: this article assesses one of the objectives of a larger study about home peritoneal dialysis (pd) in children/adolescents with chronic kidney disease (ckd). method: descriptive study carried out on 30 children/adolescents with ckd cared for at the hospital das clínicas of the ufmg from march 2004 to may 2006. a questionnaire was applied to their caregivers about the reactions and difficulties experienced by those patients and their families during dialysis programs. results: their major complaints related to the limitations caused by dialysis to the patients'; and caregivers'; lives and to peritoneal dialysis itself. conclusion: knowledge about the reality experienced by children/adolescents with ckd and their families can promote actions and measures to improve the quality of life of all involved and consequently contribute to the success of the dialysis technique.

Abstract: introduction: as experienced with the assistance evaluation of children/adolescents with chronic kidney disease in dialysis treatment on hospital we thought about which aspects could be relevant to the peritoneal dialysis (pd) application at home. the objective was to describe the level of schooling and information of the parents about the pd technique, general conditions of the place used to do pd at home and search association with inadequate technique. method: from march 2004 to may 2006 a descriptive study of an universe of 30 children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease treated in the hc/ufmg. to obtain the results was undertaken the software spss version 13.0. the parameters: low educational level, low family income, inadequate level of information, inadequate hygiene of hands during peritoneal dialysis (pd) procedure, were associated with worse quality of pd technique. results: the technique application of pd quality was considered inadequate in 18 (60%) patients. all the odds ratio values were into the confidence interval (95%) limits and were higher than 1 showing a possibility of a positive association between some independent variables and variable researched although without statistic significance. conclusion: the statistical analysis did not show association between the parameters tested although they may have a positive role in the success of the dialysis technique.

Abstract: introduction: this study assessed 30 children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease on dialysis, cared for at the hospital das clínicas of ufmg, aiming at determining the risk factors for the frequency of peritonitis and hospitalizations. method: descriptive study using the spss (statistical package for social science) software, version 13.0. the following variables were assessed as risk factors for a higher frequency of peritonitis and hospitalizations: low educational level; low family income; inadequate level of information; inadequate hand antisepsis during pd; and lack of a sink in the dialysis room. results: the odds ratio values were within the 95% confidence intervals, and, in some cases, were smaller than 1, indicating the possibility of a negative association between some independent variables and the variables studied, but with no statistically significant difference. conclusion: no statistical significance was observed for the variables studied, despite the tendency towards that.

Abstract: the reduction of transaction costs is one of the most cited benefits of a currency union. this paper aims to calculate the amount of transaction costs that could be saved by the brazilian economy after the adoption of a single currency in mercosur. the results point to savings, in present value terms, of around five billion and five hundred thousand us dollars. these are the transaction costs that the real sector would not transfer anymore to the financial sector.
