Abstract: The present study aims to analyze the possible alterations in the components of somatotype in male adolescentsinserted in a systematized soccer training program, considering the stage of maturation in comparison to non-trainedindividuals. The sampler was composed by 39 subjects, with age between 11 and 13 years old, divided into two groups, being 22 in the trained group and 17 in the non trained group. The method described as Heath-Carter, characterized by theevaluation of anthropometric variable, was used to evaluate the somatotype while to determine the maturational stage ofgroups the procedures described by Tanner (1962) were used. For the verifi cation of the effect of training and maturation,as well as the interaction between them in the results of the studied variables, the Anova two-way and the Pos-Hoc ofTukey test were used in order to identify possible signifi cant differences between the averages. The results indicate therewas no difference between the groups analyzed as well as there was not also, infl uence of maturation in the somatotype ofthe evaluated individuals (p<0,05). Based on these results, we could conclude that the intense soccer training, done by thestudied sampler, did not interfere in the components of body composition to change it signifi cantly in relation to individualswho do not take part of any type of systematized training.

Abstract: the present study had as objective to investigate the alteration dynamics of the vertical jump explosive power (vj), the horizontal jump explosive power (hj) and the fast horizontal power to the right leg (stcd) and left leg (stce) in the distinct preparation stages in adult basketball players submitted to the block training system. the group studied was composed of 12 athletes from the main league who participate in the s?o paulo state basketball championship (a1). eight athletes fully accomplished the program and were included in the analysis. the athletes were submitted to a preparation bicyclical structure (first macro-cycle with 23 weeks and the second with 19 weeks). in the structuring of the model, the macro-cycle was divided in basic stage (power concentrated loads), special stage and competition stage. the basic stage had duration of eight weeks in the first training macro-cycle and three weeks in the second macro-cycle. the athletes were evaluated in eight distinct moments of the annual cycle, characterizing a longitudinal investigation. the results demonstrated: 1) the efficiency of the block training system in basketball, evidenced by the punctual expression of the posterior long-lasting training effect (plte); 2) the competition loads presented different effects for vj and hj and 3) several occurrences verified between stcd and stce, demonstrating the necessity of evaluating and analyzing in details the results of the different jump tests when used as control parameters of the training effects.

Abstract: objective: to establish if previous surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (transurethral resection of the prostate or open prostatectomy), age, and preservation of prostatic apex can influence postoperative urinary continence in patients submitted to radical cystectomy and orthotopic ileal neobladder. patients and methods: we analyzed 62 patients with bladder cancer who were treated with radical cystectomy and orthotopic ileal neobladder between 1987 and 1998 and had been followed for at least 24 months. the average age and median follow up were 61 years and 53 months, respectively. postoperative urinary continence was correlated with 3 factors: patient age, preservation of prostatic apex during surgical excision and prior prostatic surgery for benign disease. patients were defined as incontinent when they had to use more than 1 protective pad at the daytime. results: the overall incidence of urinary incontinence was 12.9% (8 out of 62 patients). the only statistically significant factor that impacted upon urinary continence was previous prostatic surgery, with respectively 33% versus 7% rate of incontinence for patients previously operated on and for those without previous operation (p = 0.023 odds ratio = 6.5, 95% confidence interval). preservation of prostatic apex did not reach difference, 12% versus 13%, for those with and without preservation, and age also did not influence the postoperative continence rate. conclusions: prior prostatic surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia probably can increases the risk for postcystectomy incontinence and preservation of prostate apex did not affect the continence rate. this issue deserves to be considered by the surgeon and must be discussed previously with the patients when planning an orthotopic bladder replacement.

Abstract: The strategy of our approach involves the use of an instrument for measuring body proportionality for the purpose of comparing growth of segments to body dimensions. The objective of this descriptive transversal study is to assess physical growth through body proportionality of school children, aged 6 to 12 years, living at moderately elevated altitudes. Study participants included 482 females and 473 males ranging in ages from 6 to 12 years and possessing middle socioeconomic status. The students were selected from a stratified probability segment of 6,659 students. In all, we evaluated: anthropometric measurements of weight (kg), height (m), five skinfolds (mm), four body perimeters and four body-bone diameters. Proportionality analyses were performed using the Phantom theoretical model proposed by Ross and Wilson (1974). The results of the Phantom Z-scores for both genders show generally negative values for body weight (-3.7 to -1.7), skinfold thickness (0.5 to -1.5), and body circumference (-0.9 to -1.3). In turn, bone diameters show positive values in all ages as well as in both genders (1.0 to 3.2). The results suggest that school children living at moderately elevated altitudes are characterized by slow growth correlated to body weight; on the other hand, skinfold thicknesses and body circumferences in relation to bone diameters exhibit a tendency to robustness.
