Abstract: the ability of monte carlo simulation and latin hypercube sampling methods in estimating the productivity of the shielded metal arc welding (smaw) applied in works of industrial piping assembly based on small samples is evaluated. the study was conducted by analyzing a sample collected from assembly operations done at refinery duque de caxias, rio de janeiro in brazil. the controltub 5.3 software was used for data acquisition and mathworks in the simulation step. for data analysis the results were compared using the proposed simulation methods. then the similarities and differences between the methods to estimate the process productivity in analysis were evaluated. the results demonstrated the feasibility of applying the methods of monte carlo simulation and latin hypercube sampling in estimating productivity considering a welding process of industrial pipes.

Natural and human impacts on invertebrate communities in Brazilian caves
FERREIRA, R. L.;HORTA, L. C. S.;
Revista Brasileira de Biologia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71082001000100003
Abstract: species richness, abundance, distribution and similairity between cave invertebrate communities were compared among seven caves located in the perua?u river valley, north of minas gerais state, brazil. such comparisons aimed to determinate the degree of biological complexity in the sampled caves, calculated by the "index of biological complexity in caves", presented in this manuscript. the presence of potencial or real impacts on the cave fauna was also investigated. a total of 1,468 individuals belonging to 57 families of: acarina, pseudoscorpionida, araneida, opilionida, amblypygi, isopoda, geophilomorpha, scutigeromorpha, spirostreptida, coleoptera, collembola, diptera, dictyoptera, ephemeroptera, ensifera, heteroptera, hymenoptera, lepidoptera, plecoptera, psocoptera, and trichoptera was collected. caves with higher resource availability (as those hidrologicaly actives) had a higher biological complexity than those with less resource. there are two types of impacts that occur in the area: the natural (geological) and the anthropic, as intense "stepping" and visitation or use of cave entrances as cattle shelters. there are caves with different preservation degrees in the area, with invertebrate communities in varied complexity states. the communities of these caves undoubtedly deserve care, since the area is extremely important in the brazilian biospeleological context.

Utiliza??o do método TDR-tensi?metro na obten??o da curva de reten??o de água no solo
Otto, Sérgio R. L.;Alcaide, Miguel;
Revista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-43662001000200015
Abstract: tdr (time domain reflectometry) and tensiometer methods were used to obtain soil water retention curve. several soil water retention curves of a sandy loam soil were determined in both laboratory and field conditions from sieved and undisturbed soil using a tdr-tensiometer and richard's pressure plate apparatus. the values of soil water content determined by tdr-tensiometer were smaller than those achieved by richard's pressure plate. the tdr's data of the soil water content for this sandy loam soil require specific correction.
CL 64, 855, a potent do anti-Trypanosoma cruzi drug, is also mutagenic in the salmonella/microsome assay
Ferreira, R. C. C.;Ferreira, L. C. S.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1986, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761986000100006
Abstract: the nitroimidazole-tiadiazole derivative cl 64,855 (2-amino-5-(1-methyl-5-nitro-2-imidazolyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole, a potent anti-trypanosomal drug, was assayed in a short-term bacterial mutagenicity test with salmonella typhimurium strains ta 98, ta 100 and ta 102. results indicate that cl 64,855 is a potent frameshift mutagen detected by strains ta 98 and ta 102. cl 64,855 was able to revert the indicators strains at concentrations as low as 0.1 μg/plate. metabolic activation experiments with rat liver microsomal fractions did not increase the mutagenic action of cl 64,855.
Implica??es éticas da violência doméstica contra a crian?a para profissionais de saúde
Ferreira,Ana L; Schramm,Fermin R;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102000000600016
Abstract: based upon some problems faced by health professionals in the care of abused children, this is a discussion of the ethical implications in family interventions aiming to protect these children. accepting the prima facie principle that violence is morally wrong, some issues related to the children's rights as well as some ethical theories such as consequentialism, utilitarianism and deontology are discussed. the conclusion is that the protection of these children is morally justifiable and the maintenance of the families' unity should always be attempted.
