Population Fluctuation of Horn Fly (Haematobia irritans) in an Organic Dairy Farm

Abstract: Haematobia irritans (Linnaeus) is an economically important pest of livestock. Its infestation causes significant losses in meat and milk production, as well as damaging skin quality. Organic livestock production has increased because of market demands with emphasis on high standards in animal health and welfare and therefore, good production practices are warranted. To achieve this goal, epidemiological studies are needed to devise integrated pest management programs capable of reducing parasite burden to an economic threshold for organic dairy production. Consequently, the objective of the study was to determine Haematobia irritans population seasonality and to relate these changes with weather factors. Field phase was developed in an organic dairy farm located in a Mexican temperate climate throughout a 2 years period (2003 and 2004). Weekly horn fly counts and 4 weathers parameters were measured and correlated for each year and years combined. Flies were found on cattle year round in both years the highest loads were 130 flies cow-1 in 2003 and 255 flies cow-1 in 2004 both in summer. Rainfall showed the highest correlation (r = 0.68) with horn fly in 2004 and for years combined (r = 0.67), while in 2003, it was relative humidity with a correlation of r = 0.75. The lower counts of horn flies on cattle found in winter and early spring were associated with a drier environment and relative lower air temperatures; however, none of the weather factors were severe enough to achieve a complete elimination of flies, the year round presence and summer peaks of flies can be a constraint to animal welfare and production. It was concluded that yearly fly population changes can be associated to weather factors and mild temperatures in winter allows finding flies on cattle year-round.
MFCC based Enlargement of the Training Set for Emotion Recognition in Speech

Abstract: Emotional state recognition through speech is being a very interesting research topic nowadays. Using subliminal information of speech, denominated as prosody, it is possible to recognize the emotional state of the person. One of the main problems in the design of automatic emotion recognition systems is the small number of available patterns. This fact makes the learning process more difficult, due to the generalization problems that arise under these conditions. In this work we propose a solution to this problem consisting in enlarging the training set through the creation the new virtual patterns. In the case of emotional speech, most of the emotional information is included in speed and pitch variations. So, a change in the average pitch that does not modify neither the speed nor the pitch variations does not affect the expressed emotion. Thus, we use this prior information in order to create new patterns applying a gender dependent pitch shift modification in the feature extraction process of the classification system. For this purpose, we propose a frequency scaling modification of the Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients, used to classify the emotion. For this purpose, we propose a gender dependent frequency scaling modification. This proposed process allows us to synthetically increase the number of available patterns in the training set, thus increasing the generalization capability of the system and reducing the test error. Results carried out with two different classifiers with different degree of generalization capability demonstrate the suitability of the proposal.
Scaling of distributions of sums of positions for chaotic dynamics at band-splitting points

Abstract: The stationary distributions of sums of positions of trajectories generated by the logistic map have been found to follow a basic renormalization group (RG) structure: a nontrivial fixed-point multi-scale distribution at the period-doubling onset of chaos and a Gaussian trivial fixed-point distribution for all chaotic attractors. Here we describe in detail the crossover distributions that can be generated at chaotic band-splitting points that mediate between the aforementioned fixed-point distributions. Self affinity in the chaotic region imprints scaling features to the crossover distributions along the sequence of band splitting points. The trajectories that give rise to these distributions are governed first by the sequential formation of phase-space gaps when, initially uniformly-distributed, sets of trajectories evolve towards the chaotic band attractors. Subsequently, the summation of positions of trajectories already within the chaotic bands closes those gaps. The possible shapes of the resultant distributions depend crucially on the disposal of sets of early positions in the sums and the stoppage of the number of terms retained in them.
Flat Belt Separation System under Slat in Fattening Pig Housing: Effect of Belt Slope Angle  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, the separation and drying efficiency of the excreta, separated into solid and liquid fraction by a flat conveyor belt under a partial slatted floor in a facility for fattening pigs, was determined. Two transverse slope angles (4° and 6°) for the flat belts were used, in a trial with pigs from 20.61 to 117.83 kg of live weight (LW), and the sample size was 7 pigs per pen, 42 pigs per room. The flat belt was more efficient with 6° than with 4° slope angle (32.65% vs. 29.91% dry matter content of solid fraction during the whole fattening period, respectively; P < 0.0001). The separation and drying efficiency of the excreta, defined as the ratio of dry matter content of the solid fraction to dry matter content of fresh faeces, were significantly higher for the angle of 6° than for the 4° (1.4137 vs. 1.3030, during the whole fattening period; P < 0.0001). With a slope angle of 6°, this efficiency was not improved in finishing period -83.40 to 117.83 kg LW (two extractions per day) with regard to the growth period -20.61 to 83.40 kg LW (one extraction per day). Meanwhile, with 4° it did improved. The ventilation system underneath slat seems to play a key role in the obtained results.

Wigner functions for curved spaces I: On hyperboloids

Abstract: We propose a Wigner quasiprobability distribution function for Hamiltonian systems in spaces of constant curvature --in this paper on hyperboloids--, which returns the correct marginals and has the covariance of the Shapiro functions under SO(D,1) transformations. To the free systems obeying the Laplace-Beltrami equation on the hyperboloid, we add a conic-oscillator potential in the hyperbolic coordinate. As an example, we analyze the 1-dimensional case on a hyperbola branch, where this conic-oscillator is the Poschl-Teller potential. We present the analytical solutions and plot the computed results. The standard theory of quantum oscillators is regained in the contraction limit to the space of zero curvature.
Measure synchronization in quantum many-body systems

Abstract: The concept of measure synchronization between two coupled quantum many-body systems is presented. In general terms we consider two quantum many-body systems whose dynamics gets coupled through the contact particle-particle interaction. This coupling is shown to produce measure synchronization, a generalization of synchrony to a large class of systems which takes place in absence of dissipation. We find that in quantum measure synchronization, the many-body quantum properties for the two subsystems, e.g. condensed fractions and particle fluctuations, behave in a coordinated way. To illustrate the concept we consider a simple case of two species of bosons occupying two distinct quantum states. Measure synchronization can be readily explored with state-of-the-art techniques in ultracold atomic gases and, if propertly controlled, be employed to share quantum correlations between different degrees of freedom.

Para este fim, apresenta-se, resumidamente, a evolu o da situa o e os princípios educacionais na Espanha nos últimos anos. Em seguida s o abordadas evidências sobre os progressos alcan ados em matéria de educa o inclusiva no país, bem como os paradoxos e os problemas encontrados na sua implementa o pelos principais agentes implicados: alunos e alunas com deficiência, familiares e profissionais. Tais evidências ressaltam a necessidade de relan ar a aplica o da verdadeira e correta implementa o do processo inclusivo. Finalmente, defende-se o modelo de qualidade de vida como agente de mudan a e inova o no ambito escolar.The aim of this paper is to present a theoretical and critical review of the concepts of inclusion and quality of life in the ambit of education for people with disabilities. For that purpose, we will start by briefly presenting the evolution of the situation and the educational principles in Spain during the last years. Next, we will provide evidence of the progress in inclusive education in our country, as well as the paradoxes and problems that have been recently found in its implementation by the different social agents involved in this process: students with disabilities, relatives and professionals. This evidence shows the need to relaunch the real and right implementation of the inclusive process. Finally, the “Quality of Life” model is suggested as an agent of change and innovation in the school.

Abstract: RESUMO En el a o 2000, el Ecuador cambió su sistema procesal penal de tipo inquisitivo por uno de corte acusatorio. Para determinar el funcionamiento del mismo se debía levantar una línea de base recogiendo en una base de datos algunos indicadores del proceso penal. A partir de este conjunto de datos y variables iniciales, se hizo factible la elaboración de un sistema informático procesal penal ecuatoriano (SIPPE) que permite elaborar un análisis de componentes principales. En nuestro caso, la componente de mayor importancia es la estacional, ella se puede interpretar como la existencia de tendencias estacionales que podrían intervenir en la ejecución de los delitos. Palavras- chave: Sistema procesal penal ecuatoriano, modelamiento matemático, estacionalidad de delitos. ECUADORIAN CRIMINAL PROCEDURE SYSTEM BASELINE ABSTRACT In 2000, Ecuador changed its system of criminal procedure by an inquisitive type of adversarial court. To determine the operation of the lift should be collecting baseline data in a database of some indicators of criminal proceedings. From this set of data and baseline variables was made feasible the development of a computer system of criminal procedure Ecuador (SIPPE) that allows to develop a principal component analysis. In our case, the most important component is seasonal, and it can be interpreted as the existence of seasonal trends that could result in the execution of the crimes.
