Quantum Statistics and Parton Distributions
G. Miele
Physics , 1995,
Abstract: A novel approach to parton distributions parameterization in terms of quantum statistical functions is here outlined. The description, already proposed in previous publications, is here improved by adding to the statistical distributions an unpolarized {\it liquid} component. This new contribution to fermion partons is able to reproduce the expected low $x$ behaviour of structure functions. The analysis provides a satisfactory description of polarized and unpolarized deep inelastic data and shows a possible connection between the Gottfried and Bjorken sum rules.
Buffer overflow vulnerabilities in CUDA: a preliminary analysis
Andrea Miele
Computer Science , 2015,
Abstract: We present a preliminary study of buffer overflow vulnerabilities in CUDA software running on GPUs. We show how an attacker can overrun a buffer to corrupt sensitive data or steer the execution flow by overwriting function pointers, e.g., manipulating the virtual table of a C++ object. In view of a potential mass market diffusion of GPU accelerated software this may be a major concern.
Stability of contracts in the Brazilian wine industry
Zylbersztajn, Decio;Miele, Marcelo;
Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-20032005000200008
Abstract: a variety of contracts between wineries and grape growers are observed in brazil. this study addresses the concept of coordination of food chains, particularly the stability of contractual relationships. a qualitative analysis of industry-farmers contracts is presented, followed by a quantitative analysis testing transaction cost economics-based hypothesis. scale, location, age of vineyard, and the cooperative organizational form are addressed in terms of the effect on the stability of contracts. vertical and horizontal coordination are addressed. data come from a sample of 139 grape-growers that supplied 10 major wineries. the results show that more stable contracts or vertical integration are characteristic of high quality wine production, where the need for strict contractual coordination is more relevant, i.e. risk of hold up losses is larger. we test the hypothesis that site specificity and quality-related specific investments are associated with more stable contractual architectures. farmers' cooperatives present poorer performance but tend to hold more stable relationships with their members, possibly the result of adverse selection, since specialized farmers prefer to maintain contracts with investor-owned wineries, instead of farmers' cooperatives. conclusions are presented in the final part.
Primordial Nucleosynthesis: an updated comparison of observational light nuclei abundances with theoretical predictions
Miele, G.;Pisanti, O.
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2008, DOI: 10.1016/j.nuclphysbps.2009.02.002
Abstract: An up to date review of Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis predictions vs the astrophysical estimates of light nuclei abundances is here presented. In particular the analysis reports the expected ranges for baryon fraction and effective number of neutrinos as obtained by BBN only.
Three Dimensional Gross-Neveu Model on Curved Spaces
Gennaro Miele,Patrizia Vitale
Physics , 1996, DOI: 10.1016/S0550-3213(97)00155-7
Abstract: The large N limit of the 3-d Gross-Neveu model is here studied on manifolds with positive and negative constant curvature. Using the $\zeta$-function regularization we analyze the critical properties of this model on the spaces $S^2 \times S^1$ and $H^2\times S^1$. We evaluate the free energy density, the spontaneous magnetization and the correlation length at the ultraviolet fixed point. The limit $S^1\to R$, which is interpreted as the zero temperature limit, is also studied.
Unstable Heavy Majorana Neutrinos and Leptogenesis
G. Mangano,G. Miele
Physics , 1999, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevD.62.063514
Abstract: We propose a new mechanism producing a non-vanishing lepton number asymmetry, based on decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos. If they are produced out of equilibrium, as occurs in preheating scenario, and are superpositions of mass eigenstates rapidly decaying, their decay rates contains interference terms provided the mass differences $\Delta m$ are small compared to widths $\Gamma$. The resulting lepton asymmetry, which is the analogue of the time-integrated CP asymmetry in $B^0-\bar{B}^0$ system, is found to be proportional to $\Delta m/\Gamma$.
Statistical clustering of temporal networks through a dynamic stochastic block model
Catherine Matias,Vincent Miele
Statistics , 2015,
Abstract: Statistical node clustering in discrete time dynamic networks is an emerging field that raises many challenges. Here, we explore statistical properties and deterministic inference in a model that combines a stochastic block model (SBM) for its static part with independent Markov chains for the evolution of the nodes groups through time. We model binary data as well as weighted dynamic random graphs (with discrete or continuous edges values). Our approach particularly focuses on the control for label switching issues across the different time steps. We study identifiability of the model parameters, propose an inference procedure based on a variational expectation maximization algorithm as well as a model selection criterion to select for the number of groups. We carefully discuss our initialization strategy which plays an important role in the method and compare our procedure with existing ones on synthetic datasets. We also illustrate our approach on a real data set of encounters among high school students and provide an implementation of the method into a R package called dynsbm.
Segments of competition in south brazilian wineries
Miele, Marcelo;Coldebella, Arlei;Waquil, Paulo Dabdab;Miele, Alberto;
Scientia Agricola , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-90162007000300003
Abstract: the international restructuring process in the beverage sector reached the winemaking business in the 1990s, changing its panorama. increasing competitive pressure is a characteristic of this period with significant impact in regions such as the countries belonging to the mercosul block. to support firm strategies and public policies, the goal of this study was to identify the competition segments in winemaking in rio grande do sul, the southern state of brazil, and in a specific form to propose a typology of wineries based on the industrial organization literature. the data used are from the state wineries data bank of rio grande do sul, which were submitted to multivariate statistical analysis, integrating a cluster and principal components analysis in a group of 381 observations. the results showed the existence of two factors, one related to scale and diversification, and the other related to the quality of the products and of the raw material. from these factors, six groups of wineries were identified that can be named segments of competition in winemaking. group 1 is characterized by quality and specialization; group 2, by a large production scale and diversification; group 3, by a low added value; group 4, by a micro production scale; and groups 5 and 6, by a low added value, small scale, and specialization.
Albumin-bound formulation of paclitaxel (Abraxane® ABI-007) in the treatment of breast cancer

International Journal of Nanomedicine , 2009,
Abstract: Evelina Miele1, Gian Paolo Spinelli1, Ermanno Miele2, Federica Tomao1, Silverio Tomao11Department of Experimental Medicine, University of Rome “Sapienza”, Rome, Italy; 2Biomedical Engineering, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Rome, ItalyAbstract: Breast cancer is the most common type of malignancy diagnosed in women. In the metastatic setting this disease is still uncurable. Taxanes represent an important class of antitumor agents which have proven to be fundamental in the treatment of advanced and early-stage breast cancer, but the clinical advances of taxanes have been limited by their highly hydrophobic molecular status. To overcome this poor water solubility, lipid-based solvents have been used as a vehicle, and new systemic formulations have been developed, mostly for paclitaxel, which are Cremophor-free and increase the circulation time of the drug. ABI-007 is a novel, albumin-bound, 130-nm particle formulation of paclitaxel, free from any kind of solvent. It has been demonstrated to be superior to an equitoxic dose of standard paclitaxel with a significantly lower incidence of toxicities in a large, international, randomized phase III trial. The availability of new drugs, such as Abraxane , in association with other traditional and non-traditional drugs (new antineoplastic agents and targeted molecules), will give the oncologist many different effective treatment options for patients in this setting.Keywords: paclitaxel, Abraxane, breast cancer, nanotechnology
