Knowledge-intensive Services in Europe: Does Location Matter?
Mercedes Rodriguez,José A. Camacho
Urbani Izziv , 2012,
Abstract: Knowledge-intensive services (KIS) are assuming an increasing importance in innovation, to such an extent that they have even classified as “key agents” within innovation systems (Fischer, 2001). As one of the major features of KIS is coproduction, location is expected to play a significant role on the effects of KIS on regional innovation systems. The objective of this paper is to examine the relationship between the location of KIS and the innovation performance of the European regions. Starting from the results reached by previous studies: Makun and McPherson (1997) for three New York regions, Muller and Zenker (1998) for five German and French regions, Drejer and Vinding (2003) for Danish urban areas or Simmie and Strambach (2006) for large cities of England and Germany, our aim is to widen the traditional scope of the analysis and evaluate the relationship between location of KIS and innovation performance on an European basis. More concretely we try to show that the spatial concentration of KIS in some regions (and particular in capital cities) contributes to foster innovation. To do so we carry out an exploratory spatial analysis for more than 100 European regions. We take as a proxy for the location of KIS the share of employment in KIS in every region. The results obtained support the hypothesis that KIS exert a positive impact on regional innovation performance, an impact that could spill over into the neighbouring regions.
EL SISTEMA DE ATENCIóN A LA DEPENDENCIA EN ESPA A: EVALUACIóN Y COMPARACIóN CON OTROS PAíSES EUROPEOS
José A. Camacho,Mercedes Rodriguez,Manuel Hernández

Mathematics , 2015,
Abstract: In this work we study one problem of mathematical interest for their applications in several topics in Applied Science. We study simultaneous controllability of a pair of systems which model the evolution of sound in a compressible ow considered as a transmission problem. We show the well posed of the problem. Furthermore provided appropriate conditions in the geometry of the domain are valid and suitable assumptions on the fluid, is possible to conduce the pair of systems to the equilibrium in a simultaneous way using only one control.

Abstract: medicine is undergoing clinical, therapeutic and technological changes, and this is coinciding with demographic, cultural and epidemiological variations. these factors, and the speed with which innovations occur in all fields, requires a rethink of doctors' training, not only during their initial university studies but also throughout their professional life. those responsible for appointing medical school lecturers must take into account all these aspects in order to ensure that the teaching staff of the future will transmit these values to students. in turn, candidates must be aware of the key aspects around which they should develop their curriculum.

Molecules , 2000, DOI: 10.3390/50300317
Abstract: Different physicochemical properties such as solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions, tautomerism, lipophilicity and solubility in water were determined for a serie of 6,7-diaryl-pteridines in order to relate those properties with their nematocide action.
Montero,Mercedes; Rodriguez-Virgili,Jordi; García-Ortega,Carmela;
Palabra Clave , 2008,
Abstract: the behavior and attitudes adopted by the spanish press during the period of transition to democracy (november 1975 to december 1978), a time when the most relevant political and institutional changes in that process occurred, are analyzed in this article. the role of the major newspapers is explained from several perspectives, as are the reasons that prompted them to reach a consensus on the fundamental topics of public debate. the result is a demonstration of how the mass media were decisive in helping to build a new political community based on democracy. using several daily newspapers as examples -taken one by one and as a whole- the author explains the special characteristics of this interesting case of cooperation between political power and journalism. several exceptions are included as well, such as the extreme right-wing press and the basque nationalist sectors.

Abstract: background: to determine the factors associated with respiratory arrest in opiate overdoses (coma, pupillary miosis, respiratory depression, and response to naloxone) among injecting drug users in the can tunis quarter of barcelona. methods: we ran a transversal observational study where all overdoses assisted between march, 2001 and june, 2002. after overdose treatment, data were collected using a standard questionnaire, including: patients' sociodemographic data, opiate and other substances' use prior to overdose, clinical signs and symptoms presented, and medical intervention received, by ways of a standardised questionnaire. logistic regression was used as a tool for analysis. results: of 222 opiate overdose cases, 60.8% showed respiratory arrest. of all risk factors tested, only prior abstinence heroin abstinence for 2 weeks or longer days (or= 1.893; p=0.04), and no previous consumption of benzodiazepines (or:0,462; p=0,017), proved to have a statistically significant association with suffering a respiratory arrest. concomitant use of alcohol, cocaine or methadone appeared not associated with suffering respiratory arrest in opiate overdose. conclusions: the main risk factor for respiratory arrest in opiate overdoses was a prior abstinence period of more than 2 weeks. benzodiazepines use was associated with absence of respiratory arrest in overdose cases. alcohol or methadone use, as well as the use of larger quantities of heroin, was not associated with suffering respiratory arrest in opiate overdoses. a study of other factors, not included in this study, and that could interfere with our results, should be considered for their possible relationship to benzodiazepine use as well as to absence of respiratory arrest in overdose cases.

Journal of technology management & innovation , 2006,
Abstract: The main benefits generated by the genetically modified organisms (GMO`s) include greater yields harvested, foods with greater content of nutrients, vaccines, resistant plants to virus or plagues and resistant plant to high levels of salts in ground. However, there is a controversial discussion regarding its acceptation and welcoming and is missing information in regard the topic especially in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to measure the level of knowledge or acceptance towards GMO’s and biotechnology by consumer from Caracas, Venezuela. The researchers will use a survey that was previously applied to consumers from USA, Japan and some other South American countries. The results of the study demonstrated that Venezuelan’ consumers are misinformed about this topic; however, they are more informed about microbial contamination and pesticides than other topics. The main benefits generated by the genetically modified organisms (GMO`s) include greater yields harvested, foods with greater content of nutrients, vaccines, resistant plants to virus or plagues and resistant plant to high levels of salts in ground. However, there is a controversial discussion regarding its acceptation and welcoming and is missing information in regard the topic especially in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to measure the level of knowledge or acceptance towards GMO’s and biotechnology by consumer from Caracas, Venezuela.
