Purpose: The uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular tumour in adults. The objective of this work is to show how a computerised database has been formed with specific applications, for clinical and research use, to an extensive group of patients diagnosed with uveal melanoma. Method: For the design of the database a selection of categories, attributes and values was created based on the classifications and parameters given by various authors of articles which have had great relevance in the field of uveal melanoma in recent years. Results: The database has over 250 patient entries with specific information on their clinical history, diagnosis, treatment and progress. It enables us to search any parameter of the entry and make quick and simple statistical studies of them. Conclusion: The database models have been transformed into a basic tool for clinical practice, as they are an efficient way of storing, compiling and selective searching of information. When creating a database it is very important to define a common strategy and the use of a standard language.
Inheritance of Seed Weight in Large-Seed Grass Pea Lathyrus sativus L
Mera,Mario;
Chilean journal of agricultural research , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-58392010000300002
Abstract: mean seed weight (msw) is a relevant trait in grass pea (lathyrus sativus l.) commercialization because large grains are preferred in western markets. extending the knowledge on its mode of inheritance among large-seeded types would be useful in breeding programs, and therefore it was the objective of this work. a broad range of msw is found in grass pea, starting at about 30 mg. three lines (ls-97, ls-8, and ls-2026) within the large-seeded group but with significantly different msw (179, 360 and 470 mg, respectively), were crossed in a complete diallel. part of the f1 seed was sown and the remainder was stored. f1 plants from each cross were allowed to produce f2 seed and some were backcrossed to their respective parents. parents, f1, f2, and backcross populations were grown in the field in 2006. msw was obtained from single plants in each population. no difference was observed between reciprocals of crosses ls-97 ′ ls-8 and ls-8 ′ ls-2026; therefore, data from reciprocals were combined, assuming nuclear inheritance. however, f2 segregating population from cross ls-97 ′ ls-2026 and its reciprocal gave significantly different means, suggesting cytoplasmic inheritance. consequently, f2 and backcross data were handled separately to calculate heritability. parent lines with high msw, particularly ls-2026, had greater variances, raising the estimate of environmental variance. broad sense heritability estimates for msw were 0.50 and 0.32 for crosses ls-97 ′ ls-8 and ls-8 ′ ls-2026, respectively, and 0.23 and 0.24, for cross ls-97 ′ ls-2026 and its reciprocal, respectively. narrow sense heritabilities were 0.42 and 0.28, and 0.15 and 0.22, respectively. in all crosses, the genetic effects were predominantly additive, predicting a good response to selection for increased msw in early segregating generations. thus, the prospects to improve msw in large-seeded grass peas are auspicious.
Boundary Conditions for 2D Boussinesq-type Wave-Current Interaction Equations
Mera M.
Civil Engineering Dimension , 2011,
Abstract: This research focuses on the development of a set of two-dimensional boundary conditions for specific governing equations. The governing equations are existing Boussinesqtype equations which is capable of simulating wave-current interaction. The present boundary conditions consist of for waves only case and for currents only case. To simulate wave-current interaction, the two kinds of the present boundary conditions are then combined. A numerical model based on both the existing governing equations and the present boundary conditions is applied to simulation of currents only and of wave-current interaction propagating over a basin with a submerged shoal. The results of the numerical model show that the present boundary conditions go well with the existing Boussinesq-type wave-current interaction equations.
Continuous corrections to the molecular Kohn-Sham gap and virtual orbitals
Hector Mera
Physics , 2008,
Abstract: We use projector operators to correct the Kohn-Sham Hamiltonian of density functional theory (KS-DFT) so that the resulting mean-field scheme yields, in finite systems, virtual orbitals and energy gaps in better agreement with those predicted by quasiparticle theory. The proposed correction term is a scissors-like operator of the form $(\hat{I}-\hat{\rho})\delta \hat{H}(\hat{I}-\hat{\rho})$, where $\hat{I}$ is the identity operator, $\hat{\rho}$ the density matrix of the N-particle system and $\delta \hat{H}$ is either the difference between the N+1- and N-particle Kohn-Sham Hamiltonians or a non-self-consistent approximation to it. Such a term replaces the Kohn-Sham virtual orbitals of the $N$-particle system by the HOMO and virtual orbitals of the system with $N+1$ particles in an attempt to mimic a true quasiparticle spectrum. Using a local density approximation (LDA) we compute the gaps of a variety of small molecules finding good agreement with experiment and computationally more demanding methods. For these systems we examine the physical origin of this gap correction and show that so-called band gap discontinuity, $\Delta_{xc}$, contains electrostatic contributions that do not originate from the discontinuity in the exchange-correlation potential. The similarity between the corrected and Hartree-Fock virtual orbitals is illustrated and the extent to which the bare LDA virtual orbitals are improved is considered. The lack of band-gap discontinuity and the presence of self-interaction errors in the proposed correction are also discussed.

Abstract: Introduction HLA-B27 has a modifier effect on the phenotype of multiple diseases, both associated and non-associated with it. Among these effects, an increased frequency of clinical enthesitis in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) has been reported but never explored again. We aimed to replicate this study with a sensitive and quantitative assessment of enthesitis by using standardized ultrasonography (US). Methods The Madrid Sonography Enthesitis Index (MASEI) was applied to the US assessment of 41 HLA-B27 positive and 41 matched HLA-B27 negative patients with longstanding RA. Clinical characteristics including explorations aimed to evaluate spondyloarthrtitis and laboratory tests were also done. Results A significant degree of abnormalities in the entheses of the patients with RA were found, but the MASEI values, and each of its components including the Doppler signal, were similar in HLA-B27 positive and negative patients. An increase of the MASEI scores with age was identified. Differences in two clinical features were found: a lower prevalence of rheumatoid factor and a more common story of low back pain in the HLA-B27 positive patients than in the negative. The latter was accompanied by radiographic sacroiliitis in two HLA-B27 positive patients. No other differences were detected. Conclusion We have found that HLA-B27 positive patients with RA do not have more enthesitis as assessed with US than the patients lacking this HLA allele. However, HLA-B27 could be shaping the RA phenotype towards RF seronegativity and axial involvement.
Arbitrage in General Equilibrium  [PDF]
Oscar Varela
Modern Economy (ME) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/me.2012.34051
Abstract: Normal trade in goods assumes two sectors that co-exist for reasons such as comparative advantage and interact via trade. Arbitrage trade in goods assumes two markets that artificially exist and converge via trade. Restoration of the law of one price via arbitrage creates one sector out of two, and in general equilibrium, equalizes opportunity cost of resources used in production. Arbitrage does not occur in a vacuum, such that when the high (low) price of a good decreases (increases) in its artificially segmented market during arbitrage, the supply of the good falls (rises), the resources used intensively in that good earn lower (higher) returns, affecting security prices, and the supply of those resources in that good’s production fall (rise).
El Rol Uniformador de la Jurisprudencia de la Sala Penal de la Corte Suprema: Estudio empírico

Abstract: since 1995, the chilean supreme court counts with specialized chambers for knowing determinate matters. one of the main objectives in creating these specialized chambers consisted in assuring a more certain and uniform application of the law. this article focuses on the case-law produced by the supreme court's criminal chamber, trying to assess the extent to which the goal of a uniform application of the law was achieved during the years 1995-2002. in order to do so, the study utilizes the conceptual framework elaborated by relevant american research on the following of precedents, assuming that a more uniform application of the law is the natural result of that kind of court behavior. according to that research, the degree to which the precedents set by a supreme court are actually followed can be ascertained in two levels: first, by examining the phenomena within the supreme court itself, where a justice's precedential attitude depends on a low level of salience of the issue addressed, which in turns depends on specific historical circumstances (spaeth & segal); second, by studying the issue in a 'vertical' direction, that is, through the examination of the extend to which the behavior of lower court's is congruent with the jurisprudence elaborated by the supreme court, which depends on certain institutional conditions studied under the principal/agent relationship model (songer, segal & cameron). this study examines precisely the degree of precedent-following exhibited by the criminal chamber of the chilean supreme court and by the country's high courts with regard to five precedent-setting cases decided by the former. after an extensive analysis of court decisions and in depth-interviews of supreme court's justices and high court's judges, as well as criminal-lawyers, the study concludes that the introduction of a supreme courts' criminal chamber has produced ambivalent, if not poor, outcomes in terms of a uniformity of its jurisprudence, both within the crimina

Abstract: the bitter white lupin (lupinus albus l.) is grown by small farmers in southern chile, mostly from mapuches ethnic group, and exported to some european and arabic countries, where it is consumed as a snack. both markets pay higher prices for bigger grains, although the european market is more demanding. the boroa-inia cultivar originated from a single plant collected in the araucanía region (37o30?-39o30? s). this is a white lupin of indeterminate growing habit, belonging to the landrace known as ?local?. the bitter lupins introduced in the nineties, called ?alto-calibre? (high-caliber) by chilean farmers, are interesting for their grain size, but are more susceptible to lupin anthracnose than the ?local? landrace and of lower yield. the main attribute of the boroa-inia cv. is a good mean grain weight, 636 mg grain-1 when sown at the appropriate time. this is 32% greater than the control representing the ?local? landrace average. at that mean grain weight, over 80% of boroa-inia grains reaches a caliber of 13 mm or bigger. sown at the right time boroa-inia has yielded 6.3 t ha-1, and 4.8 t ha-1 in late sowings. this variety is a contribution of the chilean institute of agricultural research (inia) to the progress of small farming. small farmers usually do not invest in improved seed; therefore bitter lupin is not attractive to private seed producers. consequently, bitter lupin breeding activities have been undertaken by the public sector
