Abstract:
New Global Defect Structures

Physics , 2003, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.91.241601
Abstract: We investigate the presence of defects in systems described by real scalar field in (D,1) spacetime dimensions. We show that when the potential assumes specific form, there are models which support stable global defects for D arbitrary. We also show how to find first-order differential equations that solve the equations of motion, and how to solve models in D dimensions via soluble problems in D=1. We illustrate the procedure examining specific models and finding explicit solutions.

Abstract: We review investigations on defects in systems described by real scalar fields in (D,1) space-time dimensions. We first work in one spatial dimension, with models described by one and two real scalar fields, and in higher dimensions. We show that when the potential assumes specific form, there are models which support stable global defects for D arbitrary. We also show how to find first-order differential equations that solve the equations of motion, and how to solve models in D dimensions via soluble problems in D=1. We illustrate the procedure examining specific models and showing how they may be used in applications in different contexts in condensed matter physics, and in other areas.
The importance of strange mesons in neutron star properties
Cavagnoli, R.;Menezes, D. P.;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332005000500041
Abstract: in order to obtain the properties of compact stellar objects, appropriate equations of state have to be used. in the literature, strange meson fields, namely the scalar meson field s*(975) and the vector meson field f(1020), had to be considered in order to reproduce the observed strongly attractive ll interaction. the introduction of these strange mesons makes the equations of state harder (eos) due to the repulsive effect of the f(1020) meson. in this work the inclusion of these mesons in the equation of state and their influence on the properties of the neutron stars are investigated.
O Brasil está envelhecendo: boas e más notícias por uma perspectiva epidemiológica
Garrido, Regiane;Menezes, Paulo R;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462002000500002
Abstract: the world's population is under an aging process, and this demographic revolution is now affecting developing countries such as brazil. the dramatic increase in the number of older adults observed in the last few years has had significant implications in health planning and delivery of health services, including mental health. this study reviews the current demographic profile of elderly population and its consequences for the practice of psychiatry and organization of mental health services in brazil.
Impacto em cuidadores de idosos com demência atendidos em um servi?o psicogeriátrico
Garrido,Regiane; Menezes,Paulo R;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102004000600012
Abstract: objective: there is an increasingly number of demented elderly in brazil but empirical data on the resulting impact on their informal caregivers is still poorly documented. the purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact on informal caregivers of elderly with dementia. methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted at a psychogeriatric unit in the city of s?o paulo, brazil. structured and semi-structured interviews were administered to 49 elderly patients with dementia and their caregivers. the impact on the caregiver was measured using the zarit burden interview. results: most patients were females, had an average score of 12.2 in the mini mental state examination and high incidence of disruptive behavior. caregivers were predominantly females, generally wives or daughters who lived with their patients. the mean impact score was 32.4 (sd 16.7). variables statistically associated with the level of impact were: degree of kinship between patient and caregiver (p=0.011); caregiver's psychiatric symptoms (p<0.001), and duration of caregiving role (p=0.001). conclusions: a high impact on caregivers of demented elderly who required psychogeriatric intervention was detected. healthcare providers should be able to provide the needed support to caregivers in order to minimize problems to both patients and their caregivers.
O Brasil está envelhecendo: boas e más notícias por uma perspectiva epidemiológica
Garrido Regiane,Menezes Paulo R
Systematic and pathologic study of Paratanaisia bragai (Santos, 1934) Freitas, 1959 (Digenea, Eucotylidae) infestation in ruddy ground dove Columbina talpacoti (Temminck, 1811)
Pinto, R.M.;Menezes, R.C.;Tortelly, R.;
Arquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-09352004000400008
Abstract: this is the first report of the digenetic trematode paratanaisia bragai infestation in a ruddy ground dove columbina talpacoti, captured in a suburban area of rio de janeiro, brazil. although with a low prevalence (10%), the intensity of infection was high, considering that 116 worms were recovered from one of the kidneys. gross lesions were not observed and histopathological analysis showed very dilated renal collecting ducts with destruction and flattening of the lining epithelial cells, without inflammatory reaction. the pathological findings were compared to those previously reported for p. bragai in other hosts, since the proposal of the species in 1934.
Adiabatic index of hot and cold compact objects
Casali, R. H.;Menezes, D. P.;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332010000200007
Abstract: in the present work we calculate the adiabatic index of neutron stars formed by hadronic or quarkionic matter, under two possible conditions, with and without trapped neutrinos, and for two values of the entropy per baryon s = 0,2 kb/ baryon. we use the nonlinear walecka model to describe hadronic stars, and the mit bag model to describe quark stars. particle fractions for each case are obtained and the appearance of particles are compared with drops in the adiabatic index, whenever possible.
Mortality among patients with non-affective functional psychoses in a metropolitan area of South-Eastern Brazil
Menezes,Paulo R.; Mann,Anthony H.;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101996000400003
Abstract: high mortality rates among those suffering from schizophrenia and related psychoses have been consistently described in developed societies. however, to date there is a lack of data on this matter in brazil. in order to examine this issue, a prospective 2-year follow-up study was carried out in s. paulo. the sample consisted of 120 consecutive admissions to psychiatric hospitals in a defined catchment area, aged 18 to 44 years old, with clinical diagnoses of non-affective functional psychoses according to the icd-9. after 2 years, 116 (96.7%) subjects were traced. during the study period there were 7 deaths (6.0% of those traced), 5 (4.3%) due to suicide. all but one of the suicides occurred in the first year after discharge from hospital. age and sex standardised mortality ratios (relative to rates for the population of the city of sao paulo) were 8.4 for overall mortality (95% confidence interval: 4.0-15.9) and 317.9 for deaths due to suicide (95% confidence interval: 125.2-668.3). these results are in agreement with previous studies, and show that in brazil non-affective functional psychoses are life-threatening illnesses, which need adequate care, particularly when patients go back to live in the community after hospital discharge.
