Abstract: objective: to develop a multidimensional questionnaire to evaluate the perceptions of high school students regarding nursing and to conduct the content, face, and semantic validation of the instrument. methods: this was a quantitative-qualitative study. the theoretical-methodological approaches of pasquali, siva, and ribeiro-filho guided the steps of concept/construct definition, development of items, and instrument validation. results: the items of the instruments were developed from the literature in social psychology, nursing history, and vocational decision. after content, face, and semantic validation, the instrument was pilot tested among 269 students. conclusions: the items of the instrument were found to be easy to understand. besides diagnostic analysis, the instrument may be used in experimental studies.

Abstract: the objectives of this article were to divulge the nursing school of ribeir?o preto - university of s?o paulo as a world health organization collaborating center for nursing research development and to contribute to is history, by registering the facts concerning this designation. based on the theoretical framework about the influence of external environment in organizations of excellence, some factors that guide such designation by world health organization are identified. since the concept of collaborating center was expressed, this center is characterized by its reference terms and compromises accomplished from 1988 through 1992, considering the tendencies and perspectives.

Abstract: this second article of the series an overview of research designs relevant to nursing presents qualitative research designs. phenomenological, ground theory, ethnography, narrative inquiry, and other related qualitative-related research methodologies are described. in addition, the importance of qualitative research as groundwork for quantitative studies is discussed. this link between qualitative and quantitative research is fundamental to promote evidence-based nursing practice.

Abstract: this descriptive study aimed at analyzing the difficulties faced by mothers of type-1 diabetic teenagers and children in view of the child's daily activities and based on the principle that emotional, social, personal and economic factors concerning the family interfere with achieving good metabolic control. data were obtained by means of a semi-structured interview guide applied to 30 mothers. data analysis followed the standards preconized for descriptive studies in which directed interviews are used. results showed that: mothers have difficulties in dealing with children's daily activities such as social gatherings, in motivating them to develop physical activities, diet, school adjustment, relationship with the health team as well as with the children's behaviors regarding their brothers/sisters. results indicated the need for planned and integrated work by a multiprofissional team with the families, considering all the aspects addressed in this study and their interdependence, aiming at a successful care to diabetic children and adolescents.
