Türkiye Fiziksel Tip ve Rehabilitasyon Dergisi , 2012,
Abstract: Dermatomyositis (DM) is a connective tissue disease characterized by specific inflammatory lesions in muscle biopsy. An increased risk of underlying malignancy has been found in patients with DM. The common cancers associated with DM include ovarian cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, melanoma, colon cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, stomach cancer and breast cancer. The association between DM and breast cancer has not been fully evaluated. We present the case of a 58-year-old female patient with DM diagnosed to be suffering from breast cancer. A literature review revealed that the association of dermatomyositis with breast cancer is rare and consistent with poor prognosis. Turk J Phys Med Re-hab 2012;58:246-8.
Transient Osteoporosis of the Hip: Case Report

Türkiye Fiziksel Tip ve Rehabilitasyon Dergisi , 2008,
Abstract: Transient osteoporosis of the hip is an uncommon, self-limited entity of unknown cause. The condition was first described by Curtiss and Kincaid in 1959 as a syndrome of transient demineralisation of the hip in the third trimester of pregnancy. Generally, the patients are women in the third trimester of pregnancy or middle-aged men who are seen initially with acute progressive hip pain. The other factors that may cause synovitis and osteopenia do not accompany the disease. Joint space has usually been protected. Transient osteoporosis of the hip, which has a benign pattern, usually improves spontaneously in a few months . In this article, we aimed to review transient osteoporosis of the hip with a case who had right hip pain and was diagnosed as transient osteoporosis of the hip. Turk J Phys Med Rehab 2004;54:122-4.
Melatonin Serum Levels in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Türkiye Fiziksel Tip ve Rehabilitasyon Dergisi , 2013, DOI: 10.4274/tftr.26122
Abstract: Objective: Recent studies suggest that endogenous melatonin (MLT) production might play a role in the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the role of MLT in RA pathogenesis remains unclear. This study was performed to determine MLT serum levels in RA patients.Materials and Methods: Twenty nine patients with RA and in 25 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included in our study. Blood samples of the participants collected at 8AM. MLT was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The MLT levels of the patients with RA were compared with healthy age- and sex-matched controls. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare the data between the two groups. Results: MLT concentrations were significantly higher in RA patients than in the controls (p<0.05).Conclusion: Our results suggest that the higher blood concentrations of MLT in RA patients, especially in the early morning, may help to explain the morning stiffness and joint swelling. Türkiye Fiziksel Tip ve Rehabilitasyon Dergisi , 2011,
Abstract: Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) syndrome is characterized by symmetrical tenosynovitis of the distal extremities accompanied by pitting edema of the dorsum of the hands and feet. It occurs with an acute onset in elderly patients aged over 50 years. Due to the similar clinical features of other rheumatic diseases seen in geriatric cases, its differential diagnosis gets importance. In spite of its dramatic response to low dose corticosteroids and good prognosis seen in most of the cases, there are several reports confirming the association between RS3PE and malignancies. In this report, we aimed to draw attention to this al picture clinical picture and its differantial diagnosis with a case presenting RS3PE syndrome. Turk J Phys Med Re-hab 2011;57 Suppl 2: 351-3.

Dicle Medical Journal , 2011,
Abstract: Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between endocrine hormones, lipid levels and clinical parameters in male patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).Materials and methods: Fifteen male patients with CTS and 16 healthy controls were included in the study. Serum free T3, free T4, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were analyzed. Symptom severity and hand function were assessed using the Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire in clinical examination. Results: Serum free T3, free T4, TSH, free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels were similar between CTS patients and controls (p> 0.05). Also, there was no statistically significant correlation between laboratory parameters and clinical characteristics in patients with CTS (p> 0.05).Conclusion: The serum free T3, free T4, TSH, free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels seem within normal range in male CTS patients. Further studies are needed to investigate association endocrine factors, lipid levels such as triglyceride and total cholesterol with CTS in male and female patients.
Acute Pancreatitis Presenting with Polyarthritis and Intraosseous Fat Necrosis: A Case Report
Hilal Kocaba?,Meltem Alkan Meliko?lu,?lhan Sezer,ülkü Gürbüz
Turkish Journal of Rheumatology , 2010,
Abstract: Polyarthritis and panniculitis can be the presenting manifestations of pancreatitis. Early recognition of this triad is critical because of the high mortality rate from pancreatic disease when the diagnosis is delayed. Although this association can be seen at any age, its frequency peaks around the fifth decade of life. We report this case because of the rarity of the association and the high morbidity and mortality in these patients.
Constrained Alignments of a Pair of Graphs

Computer Science , 2014,
Abstract: We consider the constrained graph alignment problem which has applications in biological network analysis studies. Given two input graphs $G_1, G_2$, a pair of vertex mappings induces an edge conservation if the vertex pairs are adjacent in their respective graphs. In general terms the goal is to provide a one-to-one mapping between the vertices of the input graphs such that edge conservation is maximized. However the allowed mappings are restricted. Let $m_1$ ($m_2$) denote the number of $G_2$-vertices ($G_1$-vertices) that each $G_1$-vertex ($G_2$-vertex) is allowed to be mapped to. All provided results assume $m_2=1$, except for the fixed-parameter tractability result for bounded degree graphs which applies to the more general setting of any constant $m_1, m_2$. We present a polynomial time solution for the special case where $G_1$ is acyclic. Relaxing the constraint on $G_1$, for the setting of $m_1=2$, we provide several structural properties that lead to polynomial-time approximation algorithms. We then relax the constraint on $m_1$ and consider any positive integer constant $m_1$. We provide further structural properties for this setting which lead to several additional approximation algorithms with approximation ratios better than those of the previous studies. For the same setting, we also show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable, parameterized only by the output size. Previously the same result was known only for bounded degree graphs. We finally consider the more general setting where $m_1, m_2$ can be any positive integer constant and provide an approximation algorithm and a fixed-parameter tractability result that applies to bounded degree graphs.
Transgender Language: What Makes Turkish Male Homosexual Language Distinctive?  [PDF]
Meltem Sarg?n, ?zgün Ko?aner
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2016.62012
Abstract: Most gender-based linguistic studies in literature are related to men and women only, whereas the term gender is supposed to refer to transgender people as well. People whose sex and gender do not match (GLAAD, 2010) obviously use language in a different way from men and women in some aspects. This study aims to find out the acoustic and phonological differences of male homosexual language from those of men and women. Some male to female transgender people such as trans-sexuals and cross-dressers speak in a distinctive way, which usually becomes a criterion of judgment for stereotyping (Medhurst, 2002: pp. 314-315) and a matter of ridicule on the part of other people. The distinctiveness of this language use may result from acoustic, anatomical, hormonal, physiological and even philosophical differences (Pepiot, 2012). This study focuses on the acoustic and phonological aspects. To identify these aspects, voice recordings of male homosexuals were manipulated in the phonology laboratory and perception tests were conducted on a control group. The results of the study confirmed that one of the most important acoustic and phonological features that differentiate male homosexual speech from male and female heterosexual speech is pitch range, in other words intonation.

Marmara Medical Journal , 2011,
Abstract: Pneumatosis intestinalis refers to an accumulation of gas in the bowel wall. It may ocur throughout the gastrointestinal tract but is rarely seen in the stomach. Gastric pneumatosis is primarily a radiological diagnosis. Its origin is not completely understood. In this article, we describe a newborn with nonsurgical gastric pneumatosis associated with necrotizing enterocolitis.
Blood viscosity as a forgotten factor and its effect on pulmonary flow

Translational Respiratory Medicine , 2013, DOI: 10.1186/2213-0802-1-3
Abstract: We believe that BV is a significant and forgotten factor that plays an important role in pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. BV may affect PF even during the course of smoking, and before the clinical onset of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Therefore, individuals at risk of pulmonary hypertension could be detected earlier with a simple blood test.
