Melo,Daniel;
Análise Social , 2005,
Abstract: the state's delays in devising and implementing policies for modern portugal were attenuated by the actions of civil society. the gulbenkian foundation stands out in this regard. amongst other contributions, it prepared the ground for the organization of a public readership. this article analyses its sectoral policies in the period when state policy was lacking. it shows that under a dictatorial regime co-operation between the state and civil society was essential, even though the central organs of the state were not part of this equation.

Melo, Walter;
Psicologia USP , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-65642007000100006
Abstract: the field of mental health in brazil covers two periods of time: the one involving the campaigns in favor of the insane asylums, from 1829 until the first decades of the twentieth century; and the antiasylum campaigns, which had their initial mark in the movimento de trabalhadores de saúde mental (mental health workers’ movement) in 1978. between one movement and another, studies developed in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s were left forgotten and authors of this period are referred to as pioneers, establishing a variant in the search for the myth of origin. the present article discusses the myth of origin in nise da silveira’s writings through the stories of her childhood, given the fact that her contributions in the field of mental health are seen, by several groups, as a fruit of her geniality and/or pioneering, finding explanations in the autobiographical reports, consecrated by her followers.

Publicar é uma a??o política
Melo, Jacira;
Revista Estudos Feministas , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-026X2003000100022
Abstract: the production of feminist publications should be understood as a direct political action, and not as only another means of divulgation of the activities developed by the organizations. those publications contribute to the refinement and renewal of the political discourse about the female condition. the feminist organizations should understand that, in operational and practical terms, what serves as a guideline for the commercial publishers can also be part of the feminist movement's guidelines for its editorial work. today the organizations have accumulated experience but the amount of resources available is smaller. such a framework demands new strategies.
