Abstract: the effect of dose and volume of a perimuscular injection of bothrops jararacussu venom on myonecrosis of skeletal muscle was studied in mice. an increase of the venom dose (0.25 to 2.0 μg/g) at a given volume (50 μl) resulted in an increase in plasma creatine kinase (ck) levels 2 h after injection. plasma ck activity increased from the basal level of 129.27 ± 11.83 (n = 20) to 2392.80 ± 709.43 iu/l (n = 4) for the 1.0 μg/g dose. histological analysis of extensor digitorum longus muscle 4 h after injection showed lesion of peripheral muscle fibers, disorganization of the bundles or the complete degeneration of muscle fibers. these lesions were more extensive when higher doses were injected. furthermore, an increase in volume (12.5 to 100 μl) by dilution of a given dose (0.5 μg/g) also increased plasma ck levels from 482.31 ± 122.79 to 919.07 ± 133.33 iu/l (n = 4), respectively. these results indicate that care should be taken to standardize volumes and sites of venom injections.

Abstract: O perfil antigênico de 45 herpesvírus (44 de bovinos, sendo seis amostras de referência de BHV-1 e 15 prováveis BHV-1; três amostras de referência de BHV-5 e 20 prováveis BHV-5) e uma amostra de herpesvírus bubalino (BuHV) foi examinado com um painel de anticorpos monoclonais (Acms) produzidos contra antígenos de herpesvírus bovinos. Para os exames, foi utilizada a prova de imunoperoxidase (IPX) sobre cultivos de células infectadas, tendo os Acms como anticorpos primários. A determina o dos padr es de reatividade das amostras de vírus frente aos Acms permitiu a diferencia o entre os tipos 1 e 5. Todas as amostras isoladas de casos de encefalite apresentaram perfil de BHV-5. Quatro amostras de BHV-5 isoladas de áreas geograficamente distintas apresentaram perfís de reatividade diferenciados em rela o às demais amostras do tipo 5. Duas amostras de vírus com perfil antigênico de BHV-5 foram isoladas de sêmen de animais infectados. Estes resultados comprovam a utilidade da caracteriza o antigênica com este painel de Acms na tipagem de amostras de BHV-1 e BHV-5.

Abstract: Fillers are used along with various commodities as well as engineering polymers to improve the properties of polymers. The performance of filled polymers is generally determined on the basis of the interface attraction of filler and polymers. Fillers of widely varying particle size and surface characteristics are responsive to the interfacial interactions with polymers. The present study deals with the effect of particle size and its concentration on the properties of flyash filled nylon 6.

Abstract: Particulate reinforced thermoplastic composites are designed to improve the properties and to lower the overall cost of engineering plastics. In this study the effects of adding mica with variable particle size on the mechanical, thermal, electrical and rheological properties of nylon-6 was investigated. Composites of nylon-6 with varying concentrations (viz. 5 to 40 weights %) of mica were prepared by twin screw extrusion. The composite showed improved mechanical, thermal as well electrical properties on addition of filler. It is also observed that mechanical properties, electrical properties as well as thermal properties increases with decrease in particle size.
Effect of suramin on myotoxicity of some crotalid snake venoms

Abstract: we investigated the protective effect of suramin, an enzyme inhibitor and an uncoupler of g protein from receptors, on the myotoxic activity in mice of different crotalid snake venoms (a.c. laticinctus, c.v. viridis, c.d. terrificus, b. jararacussu, b. moojeni, b. alternatus, b. jararaca, l. muta). myotoxicity was evaluated in vivo by injecting im the venoms (0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg) dissolved in physiological saline solution (0.1 ml) and measuring plasma creatine kinase (ck) activity. two experimental approaches were used in mice (n = 5 for each group). in protocol a, 1 mg of each venom was incubated with 1.0 mg suramin (15 min, 37oc, in vitro), and then injected im into the mice at a dose of 1.0 mg/kg (in vivo). in protocol b, venoms, 1.0 mg/kg, were injected im 15 min prior to suramin (1.0 mg/kg, iv). before and 2 h after the im injection blood was collected by orbital puncture. plasma was separated and stored at 4oc for determination of ck activity using a diagnostic kit from sigma. preincubation of some venoms (c.v. viridis, a.c. laticinctus, c.d. terrificus and b. jararacussu) with suramin reduced (37-76%) the increase in plasma ck, except for b. alternatus, b. jararaca or l. muta venoms. injection of suramin after the venom partially protected (34-51%) against the myotoxicity of b. jararacussu, a.c. laticinctus and c.d. terrificus venom, and did not protect against c.v. viridis, l. muta, b. moojeni, b. alternatus or b. jararaca venoms. these results show that suramin has an antimyotoxic effect against some, but not all the north and south american crotalid snake venoms studied here.

Abstract: it is studied the mit-bih normal sinus rhythm database applying to the heartbeat time-series ad hoc, a statistical technique of analysis based on the wavelet and hilbert transforms. with that technique it was previously found, that there is a nonlinear, collective and intrinsic dynamical behavior in the heartbeat during the night and day hours, from 1-64 heartbeats. now it is shown, that using the biorthogonal wavelet bior 3.1 such a behavior reaches the scale 1024 in periods ~ 24 h without being affected by the circadian cycle in its statistic. that result confirms, that the circulatory system is out of equilibrium. furthermore, consistently to the statistics of tsallis, to the healthy human being it corresponds the nonextensive parameter q = 1.70 ± 0.01.

Abstract: the pectoral spines of synodontis schall (n = 813) were examined for 24 months. mean length for the right (3.2 cm) and left (3.1 cm) pectoral spines were not significantly different [p 0.05];. however, the male and female pectoral spine lengths were significantly different (p < 0.05). a fractured pectoral spine in one of the specimens was shorter than the other. the fracture which could be deleterious to balancing, feeding and reproductive activities was attributed to an injury rather than to genetic or epigenetic defects.
