Growth hormone promotes the expression of zif268 gene in the hippocampus

Abstract: growth hormone (gh) plays an important role in cognitive processes such as memory consolidation, and it has been suggested that could be involved in processes of brain plasticity. these changes may occur by promoting gene expression in the brain. in this study we showed that gh administration (5ng/kg) for 7 days improves spatial learning and promotes expression of zif268 gene in the rat hippocampus. in addition, a morris water maze (mwm) learning test induced a strong expression of zif268 gene in the hippocampus of adult rats. the effect was even greater when a mwm test and gh were applied together. our results suggest that gh might be favoring plasticity processes in the hippocampus, by promoting gene expression.
Serotipos de Listeria Monocytogenes aislados de alimentos producidos en la provincia de Cautín, Chile

Abstract: it has been reported in chile that l. monocytogenes is present in differents kind of foods. the aim of this study was to obtain information of the occurrence of the bacteria in sausages, raw milk and vegetables produced in cautín province, and to know the l. monocytogenes serotypes involved. for this purpose sausages, raw milk and several vegetables samples, were collected on 2003. for the isolation and identification of l. monocytogenes, the samples were grown in tripticase soy broth (tsb) inoculated into a preenrichment broth for listeria (35°c followed by an inoculation on selectives medias oxford and palcam (35-37°c). biochemical test were performed to all the typical listeria colonies according to the methodology recommended by bacteriological analytical manual (fda). serotyping was carried out using commercial specific antisera on 53 bacterial strains. results of the analysis indicated the presence of l. monocytogenes in 61.1% of sausages samples, 0.0% in raw milk samples and in 16.6% of vegetables samples. these results could indicate failure in the hygiene practices, like cleaning and sanitizing the surface in contact with the food. the presence of serotipe 4e in 3 strains were found in some sausages. there was a strain of virulent serotype 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b, the first and second resulted isolated from sausages and the third one resulted from vegetables. the presence of serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b and 4b, is a threat of an eventual out-break, especially in persons quite susceptive, that is why, there is a huge risk for pubic health in customers from this region. these results represent for chilean public′s health authorities an enormous challenge for controlling and prevention procedures.
On the Consistency of the First-Order-Approach to Principal-Agent Problems  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper revisits the principal-agent model with moral hazard when its solution is obtained invoking the first-order-approach. We show that the solution can be economically inconsistent even when “sufficient conditions” ensuring its validity ([1,2]) hold. To be more precise, we provide examples where is impossible to find Lagrange multipliers validating the approach. The correct solution to the problem provides a rationale for option-like contracts and minimum payments.

Abstract: This paper discusses a methodology for the environmental assessment of tourist facilities located in Cuban coastal zones in which the general aspects of the process are discussed, defined, and characterized, and examines the main processes that occur as a result of the negative impacts of construction activities. It establishes the theoretical conceptual framework underlying the research and includes a detailed analysis and processing of a sample of tourism projects located in coastal ecosystems. The methodology is complemented by results that include proposed strategic lines of action and a plan for managing negative environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of tourist facilities through prevention, correction and mitigation measures. It ends with conclusions and recommendations to guide tourism development toward environmental sustainability.

Abstract: The objective of this study is to determine the main adverse impacts that may be caused by tourism architecture upon island ecosystems consisting of small islands or islets and to propose an architectural and landscape design with a focus on the environmental sustainability of the same. A study of projects was undertaken in Cayo Guillermo, located to the north of Ciego de Avila in Cuba using methods of life-cycle assessment of buildings, matrix methods of the activities that caused severe environmental impact and statistical processing through multivariate analysis. Conclusions were reached on the need for designs that did not harm the ecosystems of islands with high ecological fragility. It has been determined that suitable construction intervention would decrease the negative impact and would allow the natural resources of these valuable ecosystems that are the basis for responsible sun and sand tourism to be preserved.

Abstract: the study of variability, genetic diversity and identification of excellent genotypes in potato (solanum tuberosum l.) is fundamental in genetic improvement programs, technology generation and seed production. nine genotypes coming from minitubers were evaluated in years 2005 to 2006, in an experimental design of complete blocks at random with four repetitions. the experimental plot had three furrows (0.9*1.8 m), but the useful plot was the central furrow. the number, weight, diameter, length and tuber yield were evaluated with the combined analysis of variance and with the comparison of averages of tukey test (p= 0.01); also, it was considered the genetic variability (h2), the phenotypical diversity between genotypes and relationship was determined between genotypes with the variables, through analysis of main components and conglomerates. the genotype 779040 was identified as of better adaptation in both years and higher average yield (34.46 t ha-1), gigant (33.85 t ha-1), 750660 (30.42 t ha-1) and zafiro (27.47 t ha-1); these four genotypes were classified in the same group, through analysis of main components and conglomerates; therefore, it is recommended for commercial sow and technology generation in the area of study. the positive and significant correlation betwen yield versus weight, diameter and tuber length per plant, suggest that potato genotypes considered in this study could be improved efficiently, by means of yield itself or considering these tuber characteristics.

Abstract: this article describes a research project carried out with a group of ninth grade students at the institución educativa distrital britalia, in bogotá. the starting point was a needs analysis which revealed the lack of practice regarding speaking skills. three interactive tasks, a free conversational activity, and basic oral defenses were designed and implemented. direct observation, videos and audiotapes provided evidence of the improvement of students’ oral communication. the changes in the pedagogical practice, in the role of the teacher, in the syllabus design and in learners’ attitudes towards their learning process were recorded as the main results of the action research project.

Abstract: pharmacogenetics is a science that allows to identify the genetic bases of the interindividual differences in the response to drugs. this review article uses a number of published examples of differences inherited in drug-metabolizing enzimes to illustrate the importance of inheritance in the determination of the efficiency and toxicity of drugs in human beings. although their development is incipient, there are already tests for the mollecular diagnosis by which the physicians and pharmacists may select the drugs and the dosing for each patient in an individual way. the development of pharmacogenetics provides at least one way to prescribe medicines without the usual empirism and to advance towards a more personalized therapy.

Abstract: La farmacogenética es la ciencia que permite identificar las bases genéticas de las diferencias interindividuales en la respuesta a drogas. Este artículo de revisión utiliza un número de ejemplos publicados de diferencias heredadas en enzimas metabolizadoras de drogas, para ilustrar la importancia de la herencia en la determinación de la eficacia y la toxicidad de medicamentos en humanos. Aunque tienen un desarrollo incipiente, ya existen pruebas para el diagnóstico molecular mediante las cuales médicos y farmacéuticos pueden seleccionar los fármacos y las dosis para cada paciente de forma individual. El desarrollo de la farmacogenética, provee de, al menos, una vía para hacer prescripciones médicas sin el empirismo corriente e ir hacia una terapia más personalizada.
