URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs030354 The narrative interview has developed into an important instrument in qualitative research. In this guide book, Gabriele LUCIUS-HOENE and Arnulf DEPPERMANN consistently link the narrative interview to the reconstruction of narrative identities: they regard autobiographical narratives as the soil in which identity constructions are simultaneously developed and presented. Due to the growing number and diversity of research focused on questions of identity and biography in the last few years, the authors compile a set of instruments for the analytical reconstruction of such identity work, which is methodologically reflected as well as flexible in its application. In order to do so, they draw on findings of such fields as narrative psychology, conversation analysis and narrative analysis. Because the book is designed as a study book, it particularly addresses those in qualitative research who are interested in identity work within verbal interaction. Furthermore, it offers a reflective collection of research findings of various discursive disciplines.

Abstract: Iceland is the only Nordic country which has never applied for membership of the EU. The Icelandic political elite has successfully kept the issue out of the mainstream political discussion. But their actions have not been in line with the political discourse: during the last few decades Iceland has established closer ties to European integration and the EU and, due to decisions made by the political elite, is deeply involved in the processes of European integration. This paper examines the steps which Iceland has taken towards European integration since World War II. The attitudes of the politicalelite, of certain organized groups as well as of the population in general are presented and the reasons for Iceland’s reserved attitude towards the EU are discussed.
Targeting BCL2-Proteins for the Treatment of Solid Tumours
Meike Vogler
Advances in Medicine , 2014, DOI: 10.1155/2014/943648
Abstract: Due to their central role in the regulation of apoptosis, the antiapoptotic BCL2-proteins are highly promising targets for the development of novel anticancer treatments. To this end, several strategies have been developed to inhibit BCL2, , BCL-w, and MCL1. While early clinical trials in haematological malignancies demonstrated exciting single-agent activity of BCL2-inhibitors, the response in solid tumours was limited, indicating that, in solid tumours, different strategies have to be developed in order to successfully treat patients with BCL2-inhibitors. In this review, the function of the different antiapoptotic BCL2-proteins and their role in solid tumours will be discussed. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of current small molecules targeting these antiapoptotic BCL2-proteins (e.g., ABT-737, ABT-263, ABT-199, TW-37, sabutoclax, obatoclax, and MIM1) will be provided including a discussion of the results of any clinical trials. This analysis will summarise the potential of BCL2-inhibitors for the treatment of solid tumours and will unravel novel approaches to utilise these inhibitors in clinical applications. 1. Mechanisms of Apoptosis Evasion of cell death or apoptosis is a key hallmark of cancer [1]. Generally, cells can die by apoptosis, a form of programmed cell death, or after acute injury by necrosis and cell lysis, which initiates an inflammatory response. Apoptosis was first described as a unique process associated with typical morphological changes by Carl Vogt as early as 1842 and was named apoptosis in 1972 [2]. It is a common property of multicellular organisms and is present in virtually all cell types throughout the body. Apoptosis plays a fundamental role in physiological processes, especially in mammalian development and the immune system [3, 4]. In addition, apoptosis represents a major barrier to cancer cells that must be circumvented. Therefore, many tumours acquire resistance to apoptosis through a variety of strategies. The most commonly occurring loss of a proapoptotic regulator involves the p53 tumour suppressor gene [5]. In addition to the activation of proapoptotic factors, resistance to apoptosis is often due to upregulation of antiapoptotic factors. Thus, a number of genes that encode components of the apoptotic machinery are directly targeted by activating or inactivating genetic lesions in cancer cells. In many tumours, deregulation of cell death underlies drug resistance and is a major reason for failure of conventional anticancer therapy. Upon activation, apoptosis unfolds in a precisely organised series of steps,

Shaping Synaptic Learning by the Duration of Postsynaptic Action Potential in a New STDP Model

PLOS ONE , 2014, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0088592
Abstract: Single spikes and their timing matter in changing synaptic efficacy, which is known as spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). Most previous studies treated spikes as all-or-none events, and considered their duration and magnitude as negligible. Here we explore the effects of action potential (AP) duration on synaptic plasticity in a simplified model neuron using computer simulations. We propose a novel STDP model that depresses synapses using an AP duration dependent LTD window and induces potentiation of synaptic strength when presynaptic spikes arrive before and during a postsynaptic AP (dSTDP). We demonstrate that AP duration is another key factor for insensitizing the postsynaptic neural firing and for controlling the shape of synaptic weight distribution. Extended AP durations produce a wide unimodal weight distribution that resembles the ones reported experimentally and make the postsynaptic neuron tranquil when disturbed by poisson noise spike trains, while equivalently sensitive to the synchronized. Our results suggest that the impact of AP duration, modeled here as an AP-dependent STDP window, on synaptic plasticity can be dramatic and should motivate future STDP studies.
Interacting spin waves in the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model
A. Schwabe,W. Nolting
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevB.80.214408
Abstract: We present an new approach for the ferromagnetic, three-dimensional, translational-symmetric Kondo lattice model which allows us to derive both magnon energies and linewidths (lifetimes) and to study the properties of the ferromagnetic phase at finite temperatures. Both "anomalous softening" and "anomalous damping" are obtained and discussed. Our method consists of mapping the Kondo lattice model onto an effective Heisenberg model by means of the "modified RKKY interaction" and the "interpolating self-energy approach". The Heisenberg model is approximatively solved by applying the Dyson-Maleev transformation and using the "spectral density approach" with a broadened magnon spectral density.
