Abstract: the aim of this work was to get a correlationship between the stages of tooth mineralization and the skeletal age. this work was carried on in order to clean the controverses find in the literature about this subject. while some articles don?t get any correlationship between those biological age, some show a great relation between them, suggesting the possibility of determine the skeletal age using the stages of tooth mineralization.

Abstract: x-rays of the hand and the wrist are largely used in orthodontics to provide orientation regarding both body and face growth during one's growing years. through these x-rays it is possible to obtain the skeletal age of the patients, which can thereafter be expressed through the chart of pubertal growth spurt. panoramic x-rays are a routine procedure in orthodontics, and its main purpose is the panoramic evaluation of the teeth that have already broken out, and those which have not. the aim of this paper was to correlate the dental mineralization stages of lower teeth and skeletal age as seen through the pubertal growth spurt, by comparing both types of x-rays. data consisted of 190 panoramic x-rays and 190 x-rays of the hand and wrist, taken of 104 male patients and 86 female ones. the results show that there is no possibility of a consistent correlation between the mineralization stages in the lower teeth and the skeletal age observed from the pubertal growth spurt chart.

Abstract: aim: this study evaluated the effect produced by segmented stainless steel t-loop in different positions between a canine and a first lower molar on the force system by the fem (finite element method). methods: the type of movement of each anchorage units and the stress found in the alveolar bone were assessed in each t-loop positions. the loop was made without preactivations bends. the posterior segment of the left side of the mandible, a canine, second premolar and first molar was modelated. there were obtained 3 different t-loop positions: close to the canine, close to the molar and in a centered position. the initial displacement of those teeth and relative differences between them were evaluated in qualitative terms. results and conclusions: when the tooth was close to the loop its displacement and inclination was smaller. an extrusive component of force was presented in all models, however it was smaller for the tooth far away from the loop. displacements of those teeth to the lingual and buccal sides were observed as a result of relative rotation. this effect was more evident when the tooth was far from the loop. the canine displacement was more significant than the molar in all models. the stress analysis on the alveolar bone indicated higher levels around the canine and when the loop was close to the molar.
In vitro corrosion of metallic orthodontic brackets: influence of artificial saliva with and without fluorides

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study verified the resistance to corrosion of metallic brackets, evaluating the superficial aspects in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the residual components. METHODS: The sample consisted of 17 sets of brackets of four different metallic alloys: Titanium, Cobalt-Chromium, Stainless steel with low nickel concentration and with titanium nitride coating (NiTi). Twelve sets were submitted to corrosion by immersion in 50 ml of artificial saliva (pH 6.5) and four in saliva (pH 6.5) containing fluoride (2 g/l), all at a temperature of 37 oC and analyzed after 7, 9 and 11 weeks. One was kept as control set. The analysis consisted in qualitative evaluation of the corrosion by the images obtained on the SEM, in semi-quantitative evaluation of chemical composition of the surface residue by SEM-EDS and the amount of ions released in saliva on evaluation of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. RESULTS: The results showed that the pure titanium brackets and the ones with low nickel concentration were superior regarding resistance to corrosion. The cobalt-chromium alloy showed the greatest corrosion. In the presence of fluoride, it was observed greater variation in all alloys, especially in the ones of NiTi coated steel and the ones of cobalt-chromium. CONCLUSION: Although observed corrosion on the SEM, the spectrophotometry showed low ions release in the artificial saliva, however, the presence of fluoride negatively affected the corrosion resistance. OBJETIVO: este estudo in vitro verificou a resistência à corros o de braquetes metálicos, avaliando-se os aspectos superficiais em microscopia eletr nica de varredura (MEV) e os componentes residuais formados. MéTODOS: a amostra consistiu de 17 conjuntos de braquetes de quatro diferentes ligas metálicas: titanio, cobalto-cromo, a o inoxidável com baixa concentra o de níquel e com cobertura de nitreto de titanio (TiN). Doze conjuntos foram submetidos à corros o por imers o em 50ml de saliva artificial (pH 6,5) e 4 em saliva (pH 6,5) contendo flúor (2g/l), todos sob temperatura de 37oC, e analisados após 7, 9 e 11 semanas. Uma montagem foi mantida como controle. As análises consistiram na avalia o qualitativa da corros o por meio das imagens obtidas no MEV, na avalia o semiquantitativa da composi o química dos resíduos superficiais por meio de MEV-EDS e da quantidade de íons liberados nas salivas na avalia o da espectrofotometria de absor o at mica. Abstract: aim: the aim of the present study was to compare the effects of different prescriptions on anterior superior tooth movement simulation through a finite element method (fem). methods: it was utilized a 3d model, which was comprised of an upper left central and lateral incisors, and a upper left cuspid. these elements were subjected to force vectors which simulated tip and torque pre-adjustments of alexander, andrews, capelozza, mbt, ricketts, and roth brackets. after the referred simulation, data concerning the spatial displacement of the incisal and apical points were registered in order to determine the position newly assumed by the teeth long axis, as well as its constituent points. results: most of the prescriptions reacted similarly to the simulation, regarding to the evaluated parameters. however, significant differences were found. ricketts' lateral incisor presented the smallest buccal inclination of its long axis. moreover, ricketts' upper left cuspid presented the greatest mesial and buccal inclination of its long axis. a qualitative analysis performed with the upper central incisor indicated that there was a larger distal movement of the apical points for the prescriptions whose authors advocated the greatest tip values (andrews, capelozza, roth and alexander). furthermore, it was observed pronounced crown buccal displacements for the prescriptions whose authors indicated greatest torque values (ricketts, mbt, alexander and roth).

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the adaptability of the four straight-wire brackets bases (morelli, unitek, a-company and abzil-lancer) to facial surface of a lower canine. the lower canine facial curvature data to be used in the three-dimensional finite element model were established by 30 brazilian adult individuals and the brackets bases curvature used were described in a prior study. the three-dimensional finite element analysis of the interface enamel/cement/base of bracket for each tested mark was used. loads of 1n promoting lateral displacement and torsion had been applied in the center of the base of brackets and the distribution of these efforts on the models was observed as well as the normal and shear tensions generated. the results had shown that the base that better fit to facial surface was the one from unitek, followed by the a-company, abzil-lancer and morelli.the brackets deformations were inversely proportional to its adaptation.the biggest peaks of tensions had been situated near to the point of force application. the cement/enamel interface was more likely to fail in the adhesion that the bracket/cement interface. the torsion load was less likely to cause damage in the adhesion when compared with the shear load.
Composi??o química e resistência mecanica da base de braquetes "Straight-Wire"

Abstract: the objective of this study was to compare the superficial hardness and the metallographic characteristics of the bases of straight-wire brackets. brackets from four different manufactures were utilized: morelli, abzil lancer, unitek and a-company. the superficial hardness test revealed that the a-company bracket base had the highest value (314 hv) followed by unitek (325 hv), abzil (230 hv) and morelli (192 hv). the presence of variable amounts of chrome, nickel, silicon, copper, aluminum, sulfur and niobium was detected by the spectrometer. the quantity of each element varied according to the brand tested and did not interfere with the quality of the alloy. this variance was most likely due to differences in the process of the fabrication of each manufactures.
