Vértices , 2010,
Abstract: Due to changes caused by the new information and communications technologies in present society, teachers are facing another challenge: to understand how these changes affect education and modify their role in the classroom. This article aims to show changes in society as a result of the new technologies and how they modify the role of schools and teachers, emphasizing that this challenge requires teachers to admit the existence of a new society built after the rise of new technologies.

Abstract: In previous articles we reported through theoretical studies the piezoelectric effect in BaTiO3, SmTiO3, and YFeO3. In this paper, we used the Douglas-Kroll-Hess (DKH) second-order scalar relativistic method to investigate the piezoelectricity in YTiO3. In the calculations we used the [6s4p] and [10s5p4d] Gaussian basis sets for the O (3P) and Ti (5S) atoms, respectively, from the literature in combination with the (30s21p16d)/[15s9p6d] basis set for the Y (3D) atom, obtained by generator coordinate Hartree-Fock (GCHF) method, and they had their quality evaluated using calculations of total energy and orbital energies (HOMO and HOMO-1) of the 2TiO

The dipole moment, the total energy, and the total atomic charges in YTiO3 in space group were calculated. When we analyze those properties we verify that it is reasonable to believe that YTiO3 does not present piezoelectric properties. 1. Introduction Even today barium titanate (BaTiO3), the first perovskite structure developed, is widely used in the industry. The polymorphic forms of BaTiO3 have been likened by Kay and Vousden [1] to a displacement of the central Ti+4 ion within its oxygen octahedron towards one, two, and then three of the six adjacent oxygen ions as the temperature is lowered. This is a simplification of the actual atomic displacements, but it is a useful first approximation for understanding the structure. The piezoelectric properties in perovskite structure result from uncentersymmetric characteristics [2]. The structure is a network of corner-linked oxygen octahedral holes and large cation filling the dodecahedral holes [3]. For a review about the role of the perovskite structure in ceramic science and technology see Bhalla et al. [4]. In previous reports [5–7], we performed Hartree-Fock (HF) studies to investigate the piezoelectric effect in BaTiO3, SmTiO3 and YFeO3. The obtained results offered evidences that the piezoelectricity can be caused by electrostatic interactions. The purpose of this paper is to present a quantum mechanical study of the YTiO3 and offer some insight into the investigation of this property in perovskites not experimentally investigated yet. In our study of YTiO3 we used the 6s4p and [10s5p4d] Gaussian basis sets for O (3P) and Ti (5S) atoms, respectively, from the literature [5]. For Y (3D) atom, we utilized the Generator Coordinate HF method [8] to obtain the (30s21p16d) Gaussian basis set which was contracted to [15s9p6d]. The quality of the contracted basis sets [6s4p]/[10s5p4d]/[15s9p6d] was evaluated in the study of the total energy

Abstract: the study evaluated the effect of oral administration of sulfated polysaccharides (sp) extracted from the marine macroalga kappaphycus alvarezii on survival and weight gain of nile tilapia post larvae during sex reversal in a stress situation. sp were extracted from the seaweed by enzymatic digestion and incorporated into the diet before the addition of the hormone 17-α-methyltestosterone, and administered at the doses of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg g-1 of body weight and a control (without sp), for 28 days. in the last week of sex reversal a stress situation was established by removing the aeration and water renewal. survival and weight gains data were subjected to a variance analysis (anova) and tukey's test for averages differentiation at significance levels of 1 and 5%. weight gains were greater in animals that received sp, regardless of the used dose and better survivals were obtained when sp were administered at the doses of 0.05 and 0.1 mg g-1, with values of 79.90 ± 5.68 and 77.60 ± 1.80%, respectively. the study revealed that small doses of the sp were able to improve survival, daily weight gain and final average weight of tilapias submitted to a stress situation.

Abstract: in this work, the effect of different densities (1, 3, 5, 7 and 9) of 3rd instar alabama argillacea (huebner) larvae on food consumption by podisus nigrispinus (dallas) males was evaluated. the densities established were converted to weight of prey offered: 13.4 mg (one larva), 33.3 mg (three larvae), 54.3 mg (five larvae), 81.8 mg (seven larvae), and 110.34 mg (nine larvae). the quantity of food consumed by p. nigrispinus increased with the prey density. the density of preys did not affect the time spent by the predator to ingest the food. the quantity of food extracted per minute was always higher in smaller densities and lower in higher densities. males mean body weight did not differ statistically between the treatments tested, and weight gain was smaller in the first two densities tested. relative consumption rates increased with the quantity of larvae offered. p. nigrispinus males might change its predatory behavior as a function of the quantity of prey available.

Abstract: objective: to study the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (pufa) omega-3 and omega-6 in the oxidative stress and in liver regeneration in rats subjected to 70% partial hepatectomy (ph, 70% hepatectomy, higgins- anderson partial hepatectomy). methods: 72 young male wistar rats were randomly divided into four equal-sized groups: control (g1), partially hepatectomized (g2), partially hepatectomized with two weeks daily intraperitoneal infusion of omega-3 (g3) and partially hepatectomized with two weeks daily intraperitoneal infuison of omega-6 (g4). in moments 36h (t1), 168h (t2) and 336h (t3) post-ph, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (tbars) and reduced glutathione (gsh) were measured in plasma and liver tissue, while glucose and total bilirubin were measured in blood. the mass of the residual liver in the same moments was the parameter used to estimate the evolution of liver regeneration. results: omega-3 pufa inhibited liver regeneration and induced reduction of hepatic gsh concentration seven days post-ph. omega-6 pufa, in contrast, showed no inhibitory effect on regeneration. there was an increase of lipid peroxidation both in blood and liver with administration of omega-6. conclusion: omega-3 pufa retarded post-ph liver regeneration, probably through inhibition of oxidative stress. omega-6 pufa increased tbars concentrations in blood and liver but did not alter the evolution of the liver regenerative process.
