Goetz, Everley Rosane;Vieira, Mauro Luís;
Estudos de Psicologia (Campinas) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-166X2009000200007
Abstract: the main objective of the present study is to identify if the perception that children have of paternal behavior differs from their perception of maternal behavior. a total of 216 children aged 10-11, in regular attendance at municipal schools in florianopolis, participated in the study. two questionnaires were used containing both closed and scale-type questions. to analyze the closed questions, the t test was used for each pair of answers. the results of the scale of paternity signify that there is a significant difference between the perceptions that children have of their father (real vs. ideal). as for the perception of the mother, there was a less significant difference. as a general conclusion, it may be said that children perceive the real father as quite removed from the ideal one in aspects relating to care and interaction. as far as the real mother is concerned, she is predominantly closer to the ideal model for these same aspects.

Vieira, Mauro Luís;Sartorio, Rodrigo;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2002000100020
Abstract: play behavior is a very frequent phenomenon in juvenile individuals of various species, mainly mammals. the purpose of the present article is to review the studies in rodents, more specifically in golden hamsters (mesocricetus auratus) and albino rats (rattus norvegicus). these animals show the highest indices of play complexity and are, among rodents, the animals most studied in the laboratory in this field of research. through this review of the literature we conclude that play behavior: a) is a motivational system in its own right and possesses characteristics that differentiate it from other motivational systems; b) is modulated by the sex and age of individuals and of the partners involved in the social interaction; and c) has a functional significance that may be related to physical training and the preparation of the individuals for life in a social environment. in this way, play behavior can be relevant to the understanding of aspects of behavioral and social development.

Alexandre, Diuvani Tomazoni;Vieira, Mauro Luís;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722004000200007
Abstract: the present study had as propose to identify the attachment relationships among institutionalized infants. fourteen infants, living in a shelter, of both sexes, aged between 3 and 9 years old, took part in this study. for the recording of the behaviors, the observational technique known as "focal-subject" was used. the main results permit us to identify: a) eldest brothers demonstrate responsive affect and care solicitations to the youngest brothers; it was registered significant interaction among older girls and younger boys; b) the play social showed to be a favorable situation for the settlement of the affective interactions; c) family image appears represented by the mother figure. therefore, it is concluded that, when the absence of a significant adult occurs, children living in a shelter situation can development attachment relationships among themselves and that a social support network represents an important aspect in the resilience of these children.

Desenvolvimento humano e cultura: integra??o entre filogênese, ontogênese e contexto sociocultural
Martins, Gabriela Dal Forno;Vieira, Mauro Luís;
Estudos de Psicologia (Natal) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-294X2010000100009
Abstract: the present study aimed to present a theoretical reflection on the integration of aspects of the phylogenetic history of human beings and history of ontogenetic development, considering the socio-cultural context where the individual is inserted. assumptions of evolutionary psychology, cross-cultural psychology and the psychology of culture are used as theoretical background. concepts such as epigenesis are presented to indicate the relationship between genetics and environmental factors. different concepts of culture are shown and discussed critically. finally, relations between cultural models of independence and interdependence with the trajectories of development are presented and discussed. through the critical analysis presented, it is concluded that the study of development (in its dimensions in terms of phylogeny and ontogeny) mediated by the socio-cultural context is consistent and represents a promising model to generate innovative and original research programs.

Sampaio, Izabela Tissot Antunes;Vieira, Mauro Luís;
Psicologia: Ciência e Profiss?o , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-98932009000300011
Abstract: this article aims to communicate results and raise the researchers′ interest about the gender and birth order influence in the individuals′ self-description. specifically, 322 adolescents ages 13 and 17 answered a questionnaire in which they were requested to mention three negative and three positive words best selected to describe themselves. assessing personality itself was not the main objective, but aggregate common characteristics from the participants to draw patterns of responses. through the correspondence factor analysis (ca), factors opposed the groups in pairs. gender was the main variable to produce differentiation between characteristics, but birth order effects were also relevant to distinguish the patterns developed. it is suggested that personality traits should be researched in brazil considering the combination of these two variables.

Cordazzo, Scheila Tatiana Duarte;Vieira, Mauro Luís;
Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79722008000300004
Abstract: this study investigated the different types of plays engaged by 6 to 10 year-old-schoolchildren and their gender differences. the representative sample consisted of 213 children enrolled in a private elementary school (from grade 1 to grade 4). the method utilized was based on interviewing the children in the classrooms and observing them directly outside the classroom during class breaks. the results showed that some types of plays (e.g., electronic and pretending games), which require ample motor functions, were performed by all children. stereotyped plays were more observed among 6 to 8-year-old-boys. the diversity of games and the frequency of the observed events decreased among 9 to 10-year-old-children, mainly with the girls. it is therefore concluded that children even at school age demonstrate motivations to play, and some differences are found in some plays regarding gender and age.

Abstract: this study aimed at assessing gender and birth order influence on parenting and perceived parental favoritism from the children perspective. the participants were 322 adolescents aged between 13 and 17 years old. two instruments were used to collect data - parenting styles inventory and a questionnaire developed by the authors. non-parametrical statistics (mann-whitney and kruskal-wallis) were used to analyze the obtained data. results have shown that: (a) child gender has significant influence on the score of parenting styles; (b) firstborn girls present significantly higher risk of suffering negative parental practices and, (c) the perceived parental favoritism is significantly modulated by both gender and birth order.
