Abstract: The present study sought to assess the rational use of antimicrobial agents in a Brazilian intensive care unit (ICU) and its association with antimicrobial resistance in elderly patients admitted to the unit. Results: Choice of empiric and sensitivity-guided therapy was inadequate in > 80% and 59% of cases respectively. Inadequate antimicrobial therapy, whether empiric or sensitivity-guided, was positively correlated with bacterial resistance (r = 0.316; p = 0.001). Sensitivity testing revealed a 46.5% resistance rate to eight out of the ten most commonly used antibiotics. Multiple drug-resistant organisms were found in 40.8% of patients. A significant increase was observed in the number of multidrug-resistant samples between 2006/2007 and 2008 (r = 0.41, p = 0.006), (r = 0.598, p = 0.001), (r = 0.688, p = 0.00). Conclusion: We found a high rate of antibiotic misuse in the study sample. Inadequate therapy was correlated with resistance to antimicrobial agents.

Abstract: Naphthoquinones are known according to their important bio-activities, such as their antitumoral and topoisomerase inhibition properties. From 2-azido (3) or 2,3-diacetylene-1,4-naphthoquinone (4) it was possible to obtain triazole derivatives (naphthoquinonic). This work describes the synthesis of two novel molecules, with triazole groups linked to 1,4-naphthoquinone using the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition and Sonogashira reactions. The synthetic strategy followed two routes (Scheme 1). First, we synthesized the 2-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinone (2, yield 98%) by using Br2 and CH3CO2H, and then used it to obtain 2-azido-1,4-naphthoquinone (3, yield 62%) from compound 1, along with ethanolic solution (reflux) and NaN3. Finally, we prepared 1,2,3-triazole compounds (4a, b) by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, involving compound (3) and terminal acetylenes (phenylacetylene, a) and glycoside (b) using Cu(OAc)2 and ascorbate, under argon atmosphere. During the second step, 2,3-dibromo-1,4-naphthoquinone was prepared using Br2/CH2Cl2 at room temperature. From compound (5) it was possible to synthesize (6), catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)2Cl2/CuI/Et3N, under argon atmosphere, in 40% yield. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions involving 2-azido-1,4-naphthoquinone (3) and alkynes (a, yield 23% and b, yield 30%) were conducted using the solvent system, (1:1) terc-BuOH/H2O/r.t/ 20 mol% of Cu(OAc)2 and sodium ascorbate, under stirring during 24 hours. The reaction involving 2,3-dibromo-1,4-naphthoquinone (5, yield 65%) and phenylacetylene was prepared using the solvent mixture (2:1) DMSO/CHCl3 and catalytic amount of CuI/Pd(PPh3)2Cl2. The final products were characterized by elemental analysis and spectrometric techniques (IR, NMR 1H and 13C). Two novel triazole compounds were synthesized from naphthoquinones by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition from suitable 1,4-naphthoquinones obtained by Sonogashira couplings.

Abstract: wood quality is apparently associated with the dendrometric characteristics that are influenced by growth conditions. the aim of this study was the dendrometric characterization and realization of pearson correlations among some technological parameters in the clonal hybrid wood eucalyptus urophylla x eucalyptus grandis grown in three silvicultural extracts. the dendrometric data were analyzed by regression analysis. the results show that the hybrid presents similar behavior to other eucalypt of the same species grown in other places with sapwood thickness in e1 (coppice with 70 months and one thinning), with little variation along the stem. all evaluated trees presented, in general, a low taper along the stem with very little bark volume among the extracts. the pearson correlation studied nine dendrometric parameters, seven physical and three mechanical properties. the parameters were evaluated, longitudinally, in three meter sections along the stem and in the pith-bark position in the first two logs according to the pearson's correlation. the coefficients demonstrated a strong correlation among the properties, with basic density being highly correlated to the other characteristics and anisotropic coefficient, important in the process of sawing and drying wood, as well as sapwood thickness. the correlation to the height relationship wasn't significant to the linear and volumetric shrinkage. radial variation showed a good correlation among all the evaluated mechanical properties in the two first logs. on the other hand, the physical properties in the radial position didn't present significant correlations with tangential shrinkage.

Abstract: physical activity (pa) in children has a decisive role in motor development and prevention of childhood obesity. the available evidence suggests that there is high prevalence of low levels of pa in children, but little is known about the level of pa in preschool children. the objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and the factors associated with low levels of pa in preschool children. this was a cross-sectional study performed in private schools in the municipality of olinda (state of pernambuco), with data collection through parent's face-to-face interviews. the study included 265 children (54.3% girls) with mean age of 4.9 years (sd=0.8). children who did not perform at least 60 minutes/day of outdoors physical activities were considered exposed to low levels of pa. data analysis was performed by logistic regression considering low level of pa as the outcome. the results showed that 65.3% (95%ci: 9.4-70.8) of children were classified as exposed to 'low level of pa'. analysis showed that higher parental education (or=2.41; 95%ci: 1.13-5.10), lack of space for playing at home (or=2.36; 95%ci: 1.17- 4.78), and attending school in the afternoon (or=2.92, 95%ci 1.55-5.49) or full-time (or=57.1, 95%ci 6.57-496.2) were associated with low levels of pa. preschoolers from families with higher number of children had lower likelihood of low level of pa (or=0.49; 95%ci 0.26-0.93). it can be concluded that the proportion of children exposed to low levels of pa is high compared to the results of similar studies and that parental and environmental factors are associated with physical activity level in preschool-aged children.

The effects of wilting and root inclusion (0, 15, 30 and 45% natural matter) on the chemical and bromatological composition coupled to silage fermentation parameters of cassava foliage silages were evaluated. Wilting affected significantly dry matter content (DM), density and pH values (p < 0.05) of silages at all root addition levels. Root inclusion increased silages DM contents by 0.128 and 0.261%; densities increased by 1.79 and 4.54 kg m-3; pH values were reduced by 0.0007 and 0.0062) respectively in wilted silages or not wilted ones for every included root percentage unit. All parameters, with the exception of acid detergent fiber (ADF) and lignin contents, showed significant interaction between wilting and root inclusion. Wilting increased ADF and lignin contents respectively by 4.52 and 12.86%, whereas root inclusion caused a linear decrease in both. Silage root addition decreased linearly neutral detergent fiber rates and conversely wilting increased them. The opposite occurred with crude protein contents, with minimum rates 8.99 and 11.03 and maximum ones 18.01 and 20.9% DM values, respectively in silages with and without wilting.
