Rivera, Mauricio;
Política y gobierno , 2010,
Abstract: some democracies around the world -including those from latin america- present equal or higher levels of state repression than the global mean of autocratic regimes. despite the political and normative relevance of this phenomenon, comparative research on democratic repression is scanty and poorly systematized. introducing the distinction between centralized and decentralized state repression, and considering advances derived from the global agenda and area studies of latin america, this article presents a review of theories and empirical explanations that can contribute to the construction of a theory of democratic state repression. moreover, this paper presents a catalog about the challenges related to the processes of theory generation and empirical evaluation, and offers alternatives to those challenges. the main conclusion is that modeling the use of state violence in terms of principal-agent relations (electedpoliticians-state security agencies, state security agencies-citizenship) la-area studies offer fruitful analytical tools for comparative research on democratic state repression.
Rivera, Mauricio;Salazar-Elena, Rodrigo;
Política y gobierno , 2011,
Abstract: there are some scholars who believe that mexican political science has followed the standard of american political science and the former has accumulated the same flaws of the later, whereas other scholars consider that the practice of the discipline is still far from the american standard but that should be its goal. the current discussion is dominated by personal impressions rather than by empirical evaluations on the actual state of the discipline. this paper analyzes a sample of 231 published articles in three leading political science journals between 1990 and 2007. contrary to beliefs about the americanization of mexican political science, results show that the later is dominantly descriptive, monographic and qualitative. the main conclusion is that beyond debating the preeminence of any method in particular, the discipline in mexico will contribute more to the extent that it starts debating substantive aspects of the research methods and processes.
RIVERA-GARZóN,DIEGO MAURICIO;
Universitas Psychologica , 2008,
Abstract: the bibliometric analysis is presented in the journal universitas psychologica of the pontificia universidad javeriana during the period 2002-2008, to identify the scientific community in the area of psychology that published in the journal and to know the communication networks used by the commu nity. it works with bibliometric methods to characterize the scientific community that publishes a journal, for which information was structured as follows: citante information to identify the relationships inherent in the scientific community psychology, and the information cited, which refers to the identification of the types or communication channels, which are cited in articles identified in the information citante, namely the community that publishes a journal with respect to the international scientific community.

A Facile and Efficient Procedure for the Synthesis of New Benzimidazole-2-thione Derivatives
Augusto Rivera,Mauricio Maldonado,Jaime Ríos-Motta
Molecules , 2012, DOI: 10.3390/molecules17078578
Abstract: A series of benzimidazole-2-thione derivatives was synthesized using a reaction between the macrocyclic aminal 16H,13H-5:12,7:14-dimethanedibenzo[d,i]-[1,3,6,8] tetraazecine (DMDBTA, 5) and various nucleophiles in the presence of carbon disulfide. A full chemical characterization using IR, 1H-, 13C-NMR and GC-MS analyses of the new compounds is provided. These compounds were separated from the reaction mixture by column chromatography (CC) in highly pure form in 15%–51.4% yield.

Mainieri-Hidalgo,Jose A; Rivera-Cerdas,Mauricio;
Acta Médica Costarricense , 2010,
Abstract: aim: to analyze the clinical data, the indications and results for the surgical reconstruction of the chest wall deformities. methods: with the purpose of assessing the information, clinical data of 45 patients treated with surgical procedures for pectus excavatum (pe) and pectus carinatutm (pc) in the thoracic surgery department of the hospital calderón guardia during the period of january 1998 to january 2010, was analyzed. results: during this period 29 patients were surgically treated for pe and 16 for pectus carinatum, 37 male and 8 female. ages started from 13 to 24 with a median of 16 years. in 28 patients the surgical indication was the emotional stress caused by the deformity, 17 had in addition to that, symptoms like dyspnea during exercise, chest pain or palpitations. in 26 of the 29 patients operated for pe a metal bar was utilized to hold the sternum in position and removed 6 months later and in the last 3 patients a polypropylene mesh was used with the same function with no need of reintervention to remove it. the results were subjectively evaluated according to the patient’s satisfaction and the medical notes. in one patient with pe the deformity recurred but not the symptoms. in forty four patients the symptoms disappeared and there was a cosmetic satisfaction but 3 developed hypertrophic scars. one patient, five months after the surgery, had a dislodged sternal bar and hemothorax needing a chest tube for evacuation and removal of the bar. ten patients had a chest tube for opening of the pleura during the surgical procedure. there were not deaths and no other complications were documented. conclusion: surgery for correction of the pe and pc deformities with physiologic alterations and cosmetic patient suffering could be performed with low morbidity and good cosmetic results, except for the patients who develop hypertrophic scars. a polypropylene mesh substitutes the metal bar and does not need a reitervention to be removed.

Vásquez,Viviana; Montero-Astúa,Mauricio; Rivera,Carmen;
Revista de Biología Tropical , 2006,
Abstract: incidence and altitudinal distribution of 13 virus cultures in solanum tuberosum (solanaceae) from costa rica. a survey was conducted in 30 fields located at three different altitudes in cartago, costa rica?s main potato producing area. twenty plants were sampled per farm, for a total of 600 samples with 200 samples per altitude. elisa was used with commercial reagents to independently test for pvx, pvy, pvm, pva, pvs, plrv, pmtv, pamv, pvv, pvt, aplv, apmov and trsv. the presence of the following viruses was determined: pvx (77 %), pamv (62 %), plrv (42 %), trsv (42 %), pvt (39 %), pvv (37 %), pmtv (31 %), pvy (30 %), pvs (19 %), pvm (13 %), pva (8 %), and apmov (8 %). aplv was not detected in any sample. this is the first report in costa rica of the presence of the viruses pmtv, pamv, pvv, pvt and apmov. a high viral incidence in the tuber seed production area as well as a high rate of mixed infections is reported. rev. biol. trop. 54 (4): 1135-1141. epub 2006 dec. 29
Experiencia con la reconstrucción quirúrgica de las deformidades de la pared torácica Surgical Experience with Reconstruction of Chest Wall Deformities
Jose A Mainieri-Hidalgo,Mauricio Rivera-Cerdas
Aim: To analyze the clinical data, the indications and results for the surgical

Mauricio Ortega,Virginia Pacheco,Edith Sánchez,Diego Antonio Rivera
