The Use of Yanai’s Generalized Coefficient of Determination to Reduce the Number of Variables in DEA Models  [PDF]
Mauricio Benegas
American Journal of Operations Research (AJOR) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ajor.2017.73013
Abstract: This paper proposes a new method to reduce the dimensionality of input and output spaces in DEA models. The method is based on Yanai’s Generalized Coefficient of Determination and on the concept of pseudo-rank of a matrix. In addition, the paper suggests a rule to determine the cardinality of the subset of selected variables in a way to gain the maximal discretionary power and to suffer a minimal informational loss.
Vantagem comparativa dinamica e crescimento numa economia com dois setores: agrícola e industrial
Marinho, Emerson;Benegas, Mauricio;Barreto, Flavio;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402007000400003
Abstract: this paper analyses the effects of agricultural productivity gains on the industrialization process and on the long run growth rate of the economy. the model allows endogenous gains in agricultural productivity and, besides that, it is assumed that accumulated experience in the manufacture sector exerts a positive impact on agricultural productivity. the model shown that a necessary condition to the decline of industrial employment, due to comparative advantage in agriculture, is that the economy of the rest of world has poor industry/ agriculture integration. finally, it is also shown that interventionist can reverse specialization induced by initial comparative advantages.
Desigualdade de renda e eficiência técnica na gera??o de bem-estar entre os estados brasileiros
Marinho, Emerson;Soares, Francisco;Benegas, Mauricio;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402004000400006
Abstract: in this paper we utilize the data envelopment analysis (dea), a non-parametric method, to estimate measures of technical efficiency of the brazilian states in the generation of welfare between 1986 and 1998. the basic welfare measures considered include the measure developed by sen and, alternatively, gdp per capita and the human development index (hdi). additionally, theil's inter and intra-regional income inequality measures are calculated so that the path of income inequality as a determinant of welfare could also be analyzed for brazil. comparing these inequality measures in the beginning and in the end of the period in analysis, we note that only in the northeast and in the southeast was that inequality was significantly reduced. and, regarding the measures of efficiency in the generation of welfare, the model using sen's measures or gdp per capita indicate that the states of s?o paulo, rio grande do sul, amazonas, roraima, and amapá are the most efficient among all brazilian states. when the hdi is considered, the same states are the most efficient with the exception of s?o paulo.
Tutoriales para Física Introductoria: Una experiencia exitosa de Aprendizaje Activo de la Física
Julio Benegas
Latin-American Journal of Physics Education , 2007,
Abstract: In this work are reported two experiences of the application of Tutorials in Introductory Physics, developed in the University of Washington at Seattle by Prof. Lillian McDermott and the Physics Education Group. This methodology, the first translated to Spanish [1] it is based on the results of more than 20 years of Physics Education Research (PER) on the main learning difficulties of different subjects of basic physics and the corresponding curriculum development. The evaluation has been realized by comparison of the performance of groups subjected to different teaching approaches. The measuring instruments have been in all cases single response, multiple choice test also developed upon the results of PER. Excellent results are obtained in both applications, even when performance is compared with student populations of more demanding and advanced educational systems. It is noted that higher learning’s are obtained in the whole class, independently of student performance and sex.

Influencia del texto y del contexto en la Resolución de Problemas de Física
Julio Benegas,Myriam Villegas
Latin-American Journal of Physics Education , 2011,
Abstract: The research in Physics Education has shown the relevance of the context in the conceptual learning of Physics. The context has been shown also relevant for the transfer of knowledge and for the development of problem solving abilities. But the importance of context in student performance, usually assessed in Physics through problem solving has received less attention. In this work are presented the preliminary results of an exploratory study in which problems of identical physics, but written in different formats, classical end-of-the-chapter or Context Rich, are solved by introductory physics students majoring in physics and mathematics in an Argentinean public university. The physical situation has also been changed: one regards applying physics to the every day experience of moving a heavy box on a horizontal floor, while the other is closer to the kind of instructional situations found in most introductory physics books. The preliminary results show that these students, trained in solving problems with both types of texts, perform clearly better in problems corresponding to the instructional situation than in everyday situations, with little effect regarding the type of text. There is also some evidence that in solving the everyday situation student tend to apply rather na ve knowledge, postponing or ignoring their instruction regarding physics concepts and problem solving strategies. A few recommendations for the teaching of introductory physics courses are presented and discussed.

Abstract: the use of predatory mites in the pest management requires of the knowhow on the available species and their principal ecological characteristics. with the aim of detecting the presence of mite predators on potential hosts of raoiella indica hirst, a survey was carried out in cocos nucifera l., areca catechu l., areca sp., roystonia regia o.f.cook and musa spp. in san josé de las lajas municipality from november 2007 to april 2009. for the arecaceae family species, six plants were selected from which five leaflets per plant were removed. in musa spp., ten plants were localized and leaf sections of 10 cm2 were removed with the central vein from each plant. the specimens collected were identified and the abundance, relative frequency and ecological indexes calculated. r. indica was not detected in the areas and botanical species evaluated. a complex of predatory mites integrated by species of five families (phytoseiidae, bdellidae, ascidae, cunaxidae and cheyletidae) was reported. these predatory mites were associated with phytophagous mites of the tetranychidae, eriophyidae and tenuipalpidae families. amblyseius largoensis was the most abundant and frequent species, followed by bdella sp. these results allow to know the beneficial species composition, which could be considered as important elements in a strategy of impact mitigation, in case the coconut red mite reaches the cuban western region.

Tempoporomandibular joint: Morphological and phisiological aspects  [PDF]
Mauricio Moscovici
Advances in Bioscience and Biotechnology (ABB) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/abb.2013.45080

This is a study where 60 temporomandibular joints were analysed. Method: dissection of anatomical parts, preserving TMJ itself, pterygoid lateral muscle, and its insertions. A special study of the articular disc was performed through histological slicing, for defining its structure and insertions. Results were compared with classical descriptions of different authors. Innervation of related structures is commented, as well as clinical aspects of TMJ conditions in view of its morphological and physiological aspects. Dental occlusion guide alterations, malocclusion, interfere on the TMJ movements, leading to meniscus traumatic compres-sion with possible chronic headache syndrome.
