Zuanon, Jener Alexandre Sampaio;Salaro, Ana Lúcia;Veras, Galileu Crovatto;Tavares, Mateus Moraes;Chaves, William;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982009001100005
Abstract: salinity tolerance of betta splendens was evaluated in a complete randomized design, with six salt concentrations in the water (0; 3; 6; 9; 12 and 15 g common salt/l) with five replications (1 fish/replication). adult female b. splendens were individually placed in aquariums in an incubation chamber at 26 ± 0.2oc and 12-hour photoperiod. fish were fed to satiation, once a day, with commercial diet. feed intake and survival rate were measured every 12 hours. to evaluate the effect of acute salinity, the mean survival time and median lethal salinity-96 h were calculated, while the chronic effect (18 days) was assessed by calculating the survival salinity maximum and median lethal salinity. the mean survival time was significantly lower at 15 g/l water salinity. the median lethal salinity-96 h calculated was 11.88 g/l, the survival salinity maximum was between 6 and 7 g/l, and the median lethal salinity was 9.35 g/l. there was a significant interaction between feeding time and water salinity. considering that the b. splendens is a freshwater species, it was concluded that this species demonstrated a high tolerance to water salinity.

Sampaio, Marcela Vilar;Santos, Michele da Silva;Rocha, José Sales Mariano da;Paula, Mateus Dantas de;Mendes, Angelise Vieira;
Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542010000200005
Abstract: the present work concerns a physical-conservationist deterioration diagnosis carried out in the sub-watershed of the ibicuí-mirim river, located in the state of rio grande do sul, brazil. the study area is 8.882,50 ha in size, and was divided into 49 micro-watersheds. the methodology consisted in determining the ruggedness coefficient (rn) from the physical properties of the micro-watershed, and classifying the coefficient into land-use classes. the diagnosis of the area showed that the level of environmental deterioration in the ibicuí-mirim sub-watershed is 30.16%. land-use classification concluded that 28.8% of the area of the sub-watershed is indicated for forestry, 32.5% for agriculture or urbanization, 28.6% for pasture or urbanization, and 10.1% for pasture or urbanization.

Salaro, Ana Lúcia;Tavares, Mateus Moraes;Chaves, William;Campelo, Daniel Abreu Vasconcelos;Zuanon, Jener Alexandre Sampaio;Luz, Ronald Kennedy;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982011001100002
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of light intensity on the feed training of juvenile giant trahiras (hoplias lacerdae). a completely randomized design with four light treatments and three replicates was used, and the following light intensities were tested: 204.9; 177.58; 54.64 and 0.00 lux. juvenile giant trahiras (length = 3.0 ± 0.4 cm and weight = 0.5 ± 0.05 g) were stocked at 6 fish l-1 in 12 rectangular tanks (24 × 20 × 14 cm) containing six liters of water, and subjected to feed training to accept dry diets. at the end of the experiment (21 days), weight gain, length gain, survival, cannibalism, and mortality rates were evaluated. data were subjected to regression analysis at 5% probability. different light intensities did not affect growth, survival, mortality, or cannibalism rates in juvenile giant trahiras during the feed training. therefore, this species can be trained to accept dry diets in the presence or absence of light.

Cesario Mateus, Paulo Terra
Journal of Mathematical Finance (JMF) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jmf.2013.33A005
Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to analyse for a multi-country large emerging market sample the choice between debt and equity simultaneously with the decision between short- and long-term debts. In order to investigate the joint decision among leverage and maturity, we examine an unique sample of 986 firms and 13,490 firm-year observations from Latin America and 686 firms and 7919 firm-year observations from Eastern Europe for the period 1990-2003. We employ dynamic panel data analysis using Generalized Method of moments. The empirical results support three main findings. First, the cross-effects between leverage and maturity behave exactly the opposite between Latin America and Eastern Europe sub-samples. Capital structure and debt maturity are policy complements in Latin America and substitutes in Eastern Europe. Second, there is a significant dynamic effects component in the determination of leverage and maturity. Finally, adjustment to the target, maturity is by no means costless and instantaneous with firm’s facing moderate adjustment costs.

Implied Idiosyncratic Volatility and Stock Return Predictability  [PDF]
Cesario Mateus, Worawuth Konsilp
Journal of Mathematical Finance (JMF) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jmf.2014.45032
Abstract: This paper investigates the role of volatility risk on stock return predictability. Using 596 stock options traded at the American Stock Exchange and the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) for the period from January 2001 to December 2010, it examines the relation between different idiosyncratic volatility measures and expected stock returns for a period that involves both the dotcom bubble and the recent financial crisis. First it is showed that implied idiosyncratic volatility is the best stock return predictor among the different volatility measures used. Second, cross-section firm-specific characteristics are important on stock returns forecast. Third, we provide evidence that higher short selling constraints impact negatively stock returns having liquidity the opposite effect.
