Abstract: the goal of the present study was to characterize the nutritional quality of the soils colonized by four endemic leguminous shrubs of serra do cipo, southeastern brazil: calliandra fasciculata benth., chamaecrista ramosa (vog.), collaea cipoensis fortunato and mimosa foliolosa benth. a mixed soil sample collected between 0 and 15cm depth was obtained in four subpopulations of each species. each mixed sample resulted from the combination of 20 simple samples (four samples of five adult individuals) in each subpopulation. routine, organic matter, micronutrients, and granulometric analysis were performed for each sample. the soils colonized by the four species were sandy, acidic, deficient in all macronutrients, and with high aluminum saturation. however, the levels of organic matter, zinc, iron, and bore ranged from medium to high. there was no significant difference in organic matter, phosphorus, iron, bore, sulphur, potential acidity, and granulometric parameters among the soils of the four species. the results of the present study corroborate previous studies in rupestrian field soils of serra do cipo. management plans and land rehabilitation programs should keep the conditions of low soil fertility because the endemic flora adapt well on these soils and may have increased competitive ability under these nutritional ranges.

Abstract: in this study, the seed germination behavior of two sympatric plant species that occur in habitats under diferent nutritional and moisture conditions at serra do cipó, southeastern brazil, was evaluated. seeds collected in the year of 2000 were placed to germinate in four replicates of 25 seeds under the temperatures at 15, 20, 25 and 30oc, and at 12 hour photoperiod. l. cordata showed higher germination percentage than l. francavillana (t=11.803, gl=30, p<0.01) as well as the radicle emergency rate (t=6.71, gl=30, p<0.01). l. cordata showed the highest radicle emergency rate (anova, f=14.282, r2=0.78, p<0.01) under temperatures of 20oc and above. under 20oc this species showed a tendency of higher germination percentages (p>0.05, n.s.). the germination percentages were correlated with the the radicle emergency rate for this species (r2=0.63, p<0.05, y=1.48x+1.97). l. francavillana showed the highest germination percentages (anova, f=3.388, r2=0.46, p<0.05) and a tendency for higher the radicle emergency rate under 25oc (p>0.05, n.s.). the germination percentages were also correlated with the radicle emergency rates (r2=0.90, p<0,01, y=4.32x-0.01). our results indicate fisiological diferences in the seed germination of l. cordata and l. francavillana. those diferences may reflect adaptations to the diferent microhabitat conditions which the two species are subjected.

Abstract: (test of hypotheses about herbivory and chemical defences of qualea parviflora (vochysiaceae) in brazilian cerrado). qualea parviflora mart. (vochysiaceae), a widely distributed tree found in different habitats in brazilian cerrado (savanna), provides resources for a great variety of insects. in this study, we tested two hypotheses about plant investment in anti-herbivore defences along a fertility gradient in cerrado: the carbon/nitrogen balance (cnbh) and resource availability (rah). we also investigated how the pattern of herbivory varies through the year and among three types of vegetation in brazilian cerrado - campo sujo, cerrado sensu strictu and cerrad?o. sampling was conducted in three types of vegetation and in rainy (january and november) and dry months (april and july). damage on 20 completely expanded leaves, leaf nutrients, sclerophlylly, total phenols and tannins were recorded for each plant (n = 30). when leaves were young, less sclerophyllous, and with higher concentration of nutrients and tannins, damage by herbivores was about 7% in cerrado sensu stricto and 3% in campo sujo. mature leaves did not show any significant difference on herbivory among habitats, that varied from 6 to 9%. nutrient availability to plants is an important factor determining production of secondary metabolites in q. parviflora, corroborating the cnbh. the absence of correlation between damaged leaf area and tannin concentration did not corroborate the rah, suggesting that tannin production is not strongly influenced by herbivores on q. parviflora.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2014.58099
Abstract:

This article reports the experience preparing a morbidly obese group to undergo bariatric surgery in a private healthcare plan in Brazil. The method used was based on assumptions of the operative groups by Pichon-Rivière (1998) and in psychoanalysis. The results have been satisfactory indicating that the multidisciplinary model, organized by the perspective of the operating group, is a viable alternative to intervention with morbidly obese patients.

Evolution of generic competitive strategies and the importance of Michael E. Porter La evoluci 3n de las estrategias gen ricas de competici 3n y la influencia de Michael E. Porter A evolu § £o das estrat gias gen ricas de competi § £o e a influ ancia de Michael E. Porter

Abstract: Generic competitive strategies are considered almost as archetypes in Business Administration, sometimes leading to over simplification of their concepts as well as underestimation of their importance. Since publication in 1980, as part of Michael E. Porter's book Competitive Strategy, the generic strategies of Differentiation, Leadership in Total Cost and Focus have been used in whole or in part, in various approaches, accelerating dissemination of Porter's work and the subject itself. As a contribution to the development of knowledge about generic strategies, extensive research was carried out comparing the best known proposals such as such as the outpacing strategies (GILBERT; STREBEL, 1987, 1989), the value disciplines (TREACY; WIERSEMA, 1995), and the Delta Project (HAX; WILDE, 2001) among others, while adopting Porter's work (1980) as reference. It becomes evident that this work is not only versatile, as confirmed by use in proposals of other authors, but that it remains up to date, influential and can serve as a basis for conceptual advances of more recent complementary proposals and development of unique strategies by organizations.

ABSTRACT Strategic management is a demanding task concerning flexibility, multi-skills and perception of the environmental changes. While searching for better ways and practices, managers often face challenging situations that cannot be easily and entirely perceived and understood. They deal with facts, rumors, unpredictable situations and, many times, with the unknown. The more complex and dynamic their environment, the more difficult it gets to perform their tasks. Under some circumstances, even consolidated models can be insufficient to guarantee the success of the decisions made. Aiming to contribute to the understanding of the reasons why sometimes results are different from those expected, several aspects of systems theory, complex thinking and uncertainty were included in this paper. We hope it can be useful to explain the reasons why even reliable assumptions and solid strategic processes and models, supported by consistent information system and decision-making processes may not allow managers to dominate their future. Abstract: The investigation of electrical properties in alexandrite (BeAl2O4:Cr3+) in synthetic and natural forms is presented in this paper. Alexandrite is a rare and precious mineral that changes color according to the light incident on it. In the synthetic form, it is used technologically as an active laser medium. The electrical characterization was obtained using the Thermally Stimulated Depolarization Current (TSDC) technique, an interesting tool to study the behavior of impurities in insulators. Alexandrite presented the electric dipole relaxation phenomenon, both in natural and in synthetic samples. It was possible to observe TSDC bands for the synthetic sample at around 170 K, and at around 175 K for the natural sample. Besides, photo-induced TSDC measurements were performed through the excitement of the samples by using a continuous wave argon laser. In addition, photoluminescence measurements were performed to verify in advance whether the laser light would be absorbed by the sample, and in order to complement the photo-induced TSDC measurements analysis. The results of photo-induced TSDC experiments have contributed to the understanding of the TSDC bands behavior: the results obtained with the technique suggest that there is an effective participation of Cr3+ ions in the formation of TSDC bands because they were more intense when the sample was exposed to the argon laser beam.
