High resilience is a mangrove trait that is compatible with life in a dynamic environment, however, catastrophic disturbance can lead to the entire forest structure being re-defined. In the Pochutla district of Oaxaca, two hurricanes made landfall in 1997 and one more in 2012. Following the 1997 hurricanes, extensive mangrove restoration was carried out in the study area. A cohort of Rhizophora mangle saplings planted in 2007 showed 10% mortality during the first year after transplantation, an average growth of 39 cm, and a positive association between growth rate and the level of water in the lagoon. Following Hurricane Carlotta of 2012, measurements of structural impact and tree mortality were taken in restored R. mangle stands and in naturally regenerated patches of Laguncularia racemosa. The role of tree girth in R. mangle susceptibility to wind damage was also investigated. The stands of R. mangle suffered 80% reduction in stem density and 86% loss of basal area, whereas the corresponding values for L. racemosa were 26% and 15%, respectively. Within stands of R. mangle, mortality conserved a positive relationship with structural impact categories and the frequency of snapped stems was segregated across girth classes. The results suggest that L. racemosa has greater resilience to hurricane damage, which has some consistency with previous research and implications for conservation restoration protocols. In order to promote a system with higher resilience, we recommend an on-going restoration effort with mixed mangrove species.

Abstract: Relational Frame Theory (Hayes, Barnes-Holmes & Roche, 2001) states that perspective-taking can be understood as a repertoire of personal, spatial and temporal deictic relations that are derived and arbitrarily applicable. Under this rubric, this research evaluated the impact of multiple reinforcement exemplars for relacional responding according to contextual cues in establishing simple deictic relations and the impact of this training on ToM and social competence scores. A multiple baseline design was implemented with four participants (41 to 58 months old) raised in an institutional setting. Participants required training in personal and/or temporal relations, the latter being harder to learn after being exposed to reinforcement ontingencies. No clear relationships among changes in the deictic relations repertoire and ToM and social competence scores were identified. Theoretical and methodological implications of these findings are discussed.
On the Origin of the Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)  [PDF]

Phylogeographic methods provide the tools to accurately access the geographic origin and diversification of crop species. In the present commentary, I urge the common bean community to face those methods and a tree-thinking mentality with regards to the long standing debate of the origin of common bean. Such efforts will ultimately bring back interest into wild bean studies and reinforce the uniqueness of this species as a system to study diversification, domestication and adaptive processes across the two most diverse hotspots in the world.

Abstract: The study of host-parasite interactions has increased considerably in the last decades, with many studies focusing on the identification of parasite molecules (i.e. surface or excretory/secretory proteins (ESP)) as potential targets for new specific treatments and/or diagnostic tools. In parallel, in the last few years there have been significant advances in the field of extracellular vesicles research. Among these vesicles, exosomes of endocytic origin, with a characteristic size ranging from 30–100 nm, carry several atypical secreted proteins in different organisms, including parasitic protozoa. Here, we present experimental evidence for the existence of exosome-like vesicles in parasitic helminths, specifically the trematodes Echinostoma caproni and Fasciola hepatica. These microvesicles are actively released by the parasites and are taken up by host cells. Trematode extracellular vesicles contain most of the proteins previously identified as components of ESP, as confirmed by proteomic, immunogold labeling and electron microscopy studies. In addition to parasitic proteins, we also identify host proteins in these structures. The existence of extracellular vesicles explains the secretion of atypical proteins in trematodes, and the demonstration of their uptake by host cells suggests an important role for these structures in host-parasite communication, as described for other infectious agents.

Abstract: objectives: to establish the trend of the bladder cancer adjusted mortality and its correlation with tobacco consumption in different spanish autonomic communities over a 15 year period. methods: we evaluate the trends of mortality rates associated with bladder cancer between january 1st 1989 and december 31st 2002 in the geographic area of spain, as well as the tendency of tobacco consumption. demographic and mortality data were obtained from the national institute of statistics, and consumption data were obtained from the commissioner for the tobacco market in the spanish economics and finances ministry. we calculate the average number of cigarettes (1 package = 20 cigarettes) consumed per person; we also calculate bladder cancer adjusted mortality rates, presented as number of deaths for that cause per 100.000 persons year, and the ratio between number of packages of cigarettes consumed and adjusted mortality rate. we determine the yearly percentage increase over the whole period of study for both the mortality rate and tobacco consumption, and evaluate their correlation by the spearman?s coefficient. results: mean adjusted bladder cancer mortality rate over the period of study was 9.4 deaths per 100.000 habitants year, and mean tobacco consumption was 109.7 packages per person year. there has been a 2.05% yearly increase of bladder cancer associated mortality, mean cigarette consumption has diminished 1.3% per year. the spearman?s test did not show any correlation between both factors (p = 0.722). conclusions: despite preventive measures for tobacco addiction in our country, there is an important continuous consumption. the increase in the incidence of bladder cancer does not seem to be related with higher tobacco consumption currently, therefore it may be related with other genetic or environmental factors.

The University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Pedagogy had to face the challenge of the transition to the new EHEA degrees under particularly difficult initial conditions: there was a lack of confidence about whether some University of Barcelona degree courses would continue to run in the Spanish State and scepticism about the benefits of the new EHEA that was being formed, among other issues. In this paper, we examine the main factors that justified the efforts of the educational community, by analysing the most substantive aspects. We review the basic contents of the various ommuniqués and declarations and carry out a thorough analysis of future threats that could distort or disrupt the successful introduction of EHEA degrees. ABSTRACT Training of trainers in Higher Education In the context of higher education the training and development of the teachers’ quality is probably one of their biggest challenges. To address it rationally we must first determine the nature of the teacher’s role within a highly complex and demanding environment such as the twenty-first century and then develop the basic program and strategy of its management. It is also a key element, determining the characteristics of the trainers who will boost these processes. In our paper we analyze the preferred spaces that make up the performance of the teachers and the nature of their relationships. From this study we derive the competencies associated with the work of the teacher and from them, we try to determine the nature of the approaches for use in teacher training college and the role that their facilitators must play.

Abstract: the publication of the decree creating the national epidemiological surveillance network, 7 years ago now, invites us to reflect on public health surveillance systems in our country and to highlight those aspects that help or obstruct these systems in meeting their basic objective of providing information that can be used to facilitate disease control. many of the events that have taken place in the health arena in recent years, labeled as ?health crises? by the communications media, have been considered by the population as unacceptable risks that the health system should have avoided; defects in surveillance systems are one of the errors always mentioned in this respect. some of these defects arise because of limitations of the instruments used to measure and classify health problems, but others are due to an inappropriate understanding of surveillance, which make it difficult to assess the true impact of health problems. a discussion of the two types of defects will not solve surveillance problems, but it may help many people to stop asking our surveillance systems for what they cannot offer.
