This model can be understood as a form of gentrification based on considerable accumulation of the rent gap, while its externalities generate social displacement and physical dilapidation. Notwithstanding, Santiago’s inner city is also a lived space where both needs and capacities of urban regeneration (without displacement) coexist. Focusing on the case of La Victoria población, located in the southern municipality of Pedro Aguirre Cerda (PAC), this article seeks to address the following two topics: historically, the inner city responds to a dialectic of urban social movements and specific spatial production; normatively, as an ongoing research project shows, it is feasible to combine neighbourhood regeneration, urban density increase, and citizen participation. The article substantiates the high complexity of the inner city of Santiago, as well as the feasibility of low-impact, participative alternatives for inner city regeneration.

Nuevo mundo - Mundos Nuevos , 2007,

Protective Role of the ACE2/Ang-(1–9) Axis in Cardiovascular Remodeling
María Paz Ocaranza,Jorge E. Jalil
International Journal of Hypertension , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/594361
Abstract: Despite reduction in cardiovascular (CV) events and end-organ damage with the current pharmacologic strategies, CV disease remains the primary cause of death in the world. Pharmacological therapies based on the renin angiotensin system (RAS) blockade are used extensively for the treatment of hypertension, heart failure, and CV remodeling but in spite of their success the prevalence of end-organ damage and residual risk remain still high. Novel approaches must be discovered for a more effective treatment of residual CV remodeling and risk. The ACE2/Ang-(1–9) axis is a new and important target to counterbalance the vasoconstrictive/proliferative RAS axis. Ang-(1–9) is hydrolyzed slower than Ang-(1–7) and is able to bind the Ang II type 2 receptor. We review here the current experimental evidence suggesting that activation of the ACE2/Ang-(1–9) axis protects the heart and vessels (and possibly the kidney) from adverse cardiovascular remodeling in hypertension as well as in heart failure.

1. Introduction All epidemiological studies show that the risk of adverse cardiovascular (CV) outcomes, such as stroke, myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure (HF), and kidney disease [1], increase progressively with increasing blood pressure (BP). On the other hand, clinical trials demonstrate that lowering BP reduces such risks [1]. All antihypertensive medications lower BP, but specific drug classes display effects beyond BP reduction (pleiotropic effects) that might contribute to cardiovascular risk reduction. Remodeling of the cardiovascular structure occurs in response, not only to changes in BP and flow, but also to modifications in the neurohormonal environment, in which the rennin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) exerts a most predominant influence [2]. The RAAS is a major regulator of BP [3, 4]. In addition, the RAAS has a role in the vascular response to injury and inflammation [4]. Chronic RAAS activation, through both angiotensin (Ang) II and aldosterone, leads to hypertension and perpetuates a cascade of proinflammatory, prothrombotic, and atherogenic effects associated with end-organ damage [3, 4]. Based on these facts, several drugs have been developed that work by (a) reduction of Ang II levels, (b) inhibition of the Ang II type 1 receptor (AT1R), (c) blockade of the aldosterone receptor, and (d) renin receptor blockade [5, 6]. During the last 25 years several clinical trials have shown the benefits with these drugs that inhibit the RAAS with regard to BP reduction, regression of cardiac hypertrophy, prevention of kidney damage and reduction of
An Extensive Cholesteatoma with Bezold’s Abscess  [PDF]
Norhafiza Mat Lazim, Asma Abdullah
International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2011.23049
Abstract: Cholesteatoma has been known to be associated with multiple complications either extracranially or intracranially. Among the extracranial complications, mastoiditis and mastoid abscess are the most common. Bezold’s abscess formation with cholesteatoma is a rare occurrence but when present can lead to sinister sequalae if not properly managed. The treatment of cholesteatoma is mainly by surgical exploration namely mastoidectomy. The aim of treatment is to eradicate the diseased mastoid and to prevent subsequent complications. Beside surgical intervention, the patient will also require intensive systemic and topical antibiotic therapy. With proper treatment patient will be hindered from experiencing unwanted complications.
Intersubjetividad y autorreferencialidad en la teoría ética de C.S. Nino
Parmigiani, Matías;
Diánoia , 2011,
Abstract: in el constructivismo ético, c.s. nino pointed out that "discussion and inter-subjective decision is the most trustable procedure when trying to arrive to moral truth". this epistemic thesis about moral knowledge clearly embraces a political assessment: in order to succeed at impartially satisfying the interests of everyone in a community, "the interchange of ideas and each person's necessity to justify in the face of the others" play a pivotal role. on the contrary, when the task in question is related to the auto-referential dimension of morality, the derivations of that thesis in nino's work become certainly unclear. by attempting to overstep this bound, i will explore in the present paper the connection that is supposed to exist between the social practice of moral communication and the discovery and justification of the auto-referential principles of behavior.
