Abstract:

A 40-year-old woman with a history of cesarean section and 3 episodes of uterine curettage for spontaneous or induced abortion presented with massive genital hemorrhage in the ninth week of gestation; she was treated with red cell concentrate and fresh frozen plasma transfusion. She was admitted to our hospital at the 11th week of gestation for continuous genital hemorrhage and cervical shortening (20 mm). Ultrasonography revealed placenta previa totalis. A lowlying gestational sac in early pregnancy, vascular lacunae, and an obscured retroplacental sonolucent zone indicated placenta percreta; magnetic resonance imaging showed similar findings. Owing to placenta percreta, uterus preservation was considered impossible. Elective cesarean section followed by total hysterectomy was performed at the 37th week of gestation, with bilateral internal iliac artery balloon catheter occlusion for reducing blood loss. The perioperative blood loss was 2,835 mL, for which the patient received blood transfusion. The postoperative course was uncomplicated.

Abstract: The brown alga, Akamoku, also known as Sargassum horneri, was harvested at depths of 1 - 2 and 5 m in the oceanic areas of the Chikuzen Sea off the coast of Fukuoka, Japan, and its chemical composition (moisture, protein, lipid, ash, carbohydrate and total dietary fiber content) was investigated. The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the chemical components and the growth of S. horneri as recyclable resource for a sustainable future. S. horneri at an ocean depth of 5 m grew rapidly. The biomass was abundant from January until April. After maturation and gamete release at the middle of April, plant senescence began occurring, and only short plants remained at the sea bottom. On the other hand, S. horneri at an ocean depth of 1 - 2 m grew slowly and could be harvested until early June. The protein, lipid and total dietary fiber content of S. horneri at an ocean depth of 5 m showed apparent gender-based differences.

Abstract: A 39-year-old 34-week-pregnant woman was referred to our hospital for preterm labor and fetal dysfunction. Fetal middle cerebral artery systolic maximum blood flow velocity was high, so fetal anemia was suspected. Blood type was O-type Rh (+) and fetal hemoglobin was 0.4%; tests for irregular antibody and human parvovirus B19 IgM were negative. A high brightness echoic mass was observed in fetal stomach bubble, and amniotic fluid appeared bright. Labor suppression was disabled, and emergency cesarean section was performed. Amniotic fluid turbidity was observed, and on suctioning the stomach content of the infant, turbid amniotic fluid containing blood was obtained. On placental pathological examination, the cause of bloody amniotic fluid was not identified. The infant’s hemoglobin level was low at 8.7 g/dL, so the infant received red cell concentrate, with improvement of general condition.
The Influence of Oral Malodor on Psychological Stress  [PDF]

Abstract: We examined the influence of oral malodor on psychological stress among patients with a chief complaint of oral malodor. A total of 101 patients (40 male and 61 female) who visited our clinic with a chief complaint of oral malodor were included in this study. The primary compounds of oral malodor—volatile sulfur compounds (VSC)—were measured using the Oral ChromaTM instrument. Salivary stress markers, cortisol, and chromogranin A were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The mood was measured using the Profile of Mood States 2nd Edition (POMS2). Among the participants, 60.3% had at least one level above the threshold in the following three markers: hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. The gender distribution was 35 female (57.4%) and 25 male (62.5%). Salivary cortisol levels, a biomarker of stress, did not vary depending on the presence or absence of oral malodor. Chromogranin A levels were higher in the oral malodor female group than in the no oral malodor female group. With respect to the POMS2, regardless of the presence or absence of oral malodor measured using gas chromatography, the participants had higher scores for “Anger-Hostility” and “Fatigue-Inertia”. Analysis by gender showed that “Depression-Dejection” was significantly higher in the oral malodor female group than in the no oral malodor female group. These results suggest that those who are worried about oral malodor have higher psychological stress than those who are not, regardless of the presence or absence of oral malodor measured using gas chromatography.
The Effect of Rice Flour for Amelioration of Sleeping in Social Isolated Mice  [PDF]

Abstract: In an era where the health-damaging effects of wheat flour (gluten) are increasingly recognized, rice flour has become an important alternative for many people, yet its psychophysiological effects remain largely unknown. Here, we report the potential beneficial effects of rice flour for sleep disturbances in stressed mice. Four-week-old male ddY mice were reared in social isolation for 4 weeks. The control group was reared in a social group. Rice flour was given orally in food to isolated mice at a dose of 2.5 w/w% and 5.0 w/w% for 4 weeks from the start of isolation rearing. MF food was given to the control group. Pentobarbital-induced (40 mg/kg, i.p.) time to sleep induction and righting reflex was measured to determine the effects of rice flour on sleep behavior. Blood samples were obtained after the experiments, and serum corticosterone was measured. Sections from the prefrontal cortex and the brainstem were isolated to measure serotonin, dopamine and interleukin (IL)-6 concentrations. We found that the administration of rice flour dose-dependently improved time to sleep and reduced sleep time in socially isolated mice. Blood corticosterone concentrations, which increased after isolation stress, were decreased after the administration of rice flour. Serotonin and dopamine concentrations in the prefrontal cortex which decreased after isolation stress improved after the administration of rice flour. Brainstem IL-6 concentrations increased after isolation stress, but decreased dose-dependently after rice flour administration. Our results suggest that rice flour reverses sleep disturbances in mice induced by social isolation.
Outcomes and Prognostic Factors for Adenocarcinoma/Adenosquamous Carcinomas Treated with Radical Hysterectomy and Adjuvant Therapy  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: To determine outcomes and prognostic factors for early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma/ adenosquamous carcinomas (AC/ASC) patients who are treated with radical hysterectomy and adjuvant therapy to optimize their treatment. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 26 patients with International Federation of Gynecologists and Obstetricians stage IB-IIB cervical AC/ASC who were treated with radical hysterectomy and adjuvant therapy. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared using the log-rank test. The prognostic significance of various clinical features was determined by using multivariate analysis with the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Results: Univariate analysis revealed that OS was significantly shorter in patients with lymph node metastasis and lymphovascular space invasion. Similarly, PFS was significantly shorter for patients with lymph node metastasis and parametrial invasion. Furthermore, multivariate analysis showed that lymph node metastasis was the only independent predictor for PFS (hazard ratio: 6.47, 95% confidence interval: 1.33 - 31.44, p = 0.021). However, the use of adjuvant chemoradiotherapy did not have any significant effect on either OS or PFS, regardless of lymph node metastasis. Conclusions: Lymph node metastasis is an independent prognostic factor for poor survival in cervical AC/ASC patients treated with radical hysterectomy and adjuvant therapy. In addition, adjuvant chemoradiotherapy does not improve their survival, regardless of lymph node metastasis, which suggests that novel or personalized adjuvant therapeutic strategies with fewer adverse effects than existing strategies are needed.
Effect of Moisture on the Orientation Birefringence of Cellulose Esters

Abstract: Orientation birefringence and its wavelength dispersion are studied for hot-drawn films of cellulose esters such as cellulose triacetate (CTA), cellulose diacetate (CDA), and cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) exposed to three different humidities of environments. Hot-drawn CTA films show negative birefringence that decreases with increasing wavelength. On the other hand, CDA and CAP films show positive birefringence that increases with increasing wavelength, i.e., the so-called extraordinary wavelength dispersion of birefringence. Upon exposure to high humidity environment, the orientation birefringence of CDA and CAP decreases. The decrease is prominent for the samples containing a large amount of water. CTA, however, shows an increase in magnitude of its negative orientation birefringence with increasing moisture content. The results can be explained by the increase of the polarizability anisotropy perpendicular to the stretching direction in the cellulose esters. It is found from ATR-FTIR measurements that hydrogen bonds are formed between carbonyl groups of cellulose esters and water molecules. Considering that orientation birefringence of cellulose esters is determined mainly by ester groups, the formation of hydrogen bonds contributes to the polarizability anisotropy, thus affecting the orientation birefringence.
High Field ESR and Magnetization of the Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

Abstract: We report the experimental and the analytical results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetization in high magnetic fields up to about 68 T of the quasi two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$. From the temperature evolution of the ESR absorption linewidth, we find a distinct disturbing of the development of the spin correlation by $Z_2$-vortices between 23 K and 8.5 K. Below $T_{\rm{v}}=8.5$ K, spin-wave calculations based on a 57$^{\circ}$ spiral spin order well explains the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields and high field magnetization processes for $H$$\parallel$$c$ and $H$$\perp$$c$, although the magnetization for $H$$\perp$$c$ at high fields is different from the calculated one. Furthermore, we explain the field independent specific heat with $T^2$-dependence by the same spin-wave calculation, but the magnitude of the specific heat is much less than the observed one. Accordingly, these results suggest the occurrence of a $Z_2$ vortex-induced topological transition at $T_{\rm{v}}$ and may indicate quantum effects beyond the descriptions based on the above classical spin models.
Self Assembly of Honeycomb TiO2 Coatings by Tea-Leaf Extracts as the Dispersoids  [PDF]

Abstract: Photo catalytic TiO2 coatings with well defined honeycomb structure were successfully self-assembled on glass substrates by a simple “dip and burn solgel method“. The crux of this new method is that the starting material for the sol-gel coating (the water solution of ammonium titanium citrate) was “doped” with “tea-leaf extracts”. Tea-leaf extracts were completely dissolved in the water solution of ammonium titanium citrate and nucleate uniformly during the drying procedure of the coating precursor formation. This uniformly dispersed nucleation of the “tea-leaf extracts (tannin, catechin…)” were extracted during calcinations and leaving honeycomb-cell like nano-structure in the TiO2 coatings. Self-assembled cells were uniformly distributed in the TiO2 coatings and the diameter of the cells was in the range of 200 - 1000 nm. Fine honeycomb structures were clearly observed with microscopic observations.

Abstract: This article considers aggregate price determination related to the neutrality of money. When the true cost of living can be defined as a function of prices in an overlapping generations (OLG) model, the marginal cost of a firm depends solely on the current and future prices. Thus, the sequence of equilibrium price becomes independent of the quantity of money. Hence, money becomes non-neutral. However, when people hold the extraneous belief that prices increases proportionately with money, this belief becomes self-fulfilling as long as the increment of money and true cost of living are low enough to guarantee full employment.
