Modelling of Habitat Suitability Index for Muntjac Muntiacus muntjak Using Remote Sensing, GIS and Multiple Logistic Regression

Abstract: Habitat degradation and loss has been widely recognized as the main cause for the decline of wildlife population. Evaluating the quality of wildlife habitat can provide essential information for wildlife refuge design and management. The purpose of this study was to produce georeferenced ecological information about suitable habitats available for muntjac, Muntiacus muntjak in Chandoli tiger reserve, India (17° 04' 00" N to 17° 19' 54" N and 73° 40' 43" E to 73° 53' 09" E). Habitats were evaluated using multiple logistic regression integrated with remote sensing and geographic information system. Satellite imageries of LISS-III of IRS-P6 of study area were digitally processed. To generate collateral data topographic maps were analysed in a GIS framework. Layers of different variables such as Landuse land cover, forest density, proximity to disturbances and water resources and a digital terrain model were created from satellite and topographic sheets. These layers along with GPS location of muntjac presence/absence and ―multiple logistic regression (MLR) techniques were integrated in a GIS environment to model habitat suitability index of muntjac. The results indicate that approximately 222.39 km2 (75.4%) of the forest of tiger reserve was least suitable for muntjac, whereas, 29.53 km2 (10.02%) was moderately suitable, 22.12 km2 (7.5%) suitable and 20.70 km2 (7.0%) was highly suitable. The accuracy level of this model was 97.6%. The model can be considered as potent enough to advocate that forests of this area are most appropriate for declaring it as a reserve for muntjac conservation, ultimately to provide prey base for tiger.

Abstract: Technological breakthroughs in physics are often adapted and incorporated into the ever growing field of otolaryngology. When first discovered, “The Incredible Laser” had promised to be science’s new “Aladdin’s lamp”, it can “light up the moon”, “kill instantly”, or “perform miracle surgery” [1]. Although not quite fulfilling these roles, laser technology has been a key element in the development of endolaryngeal surgery. This article looks at the invention of Laser and it’s progression into an invaluable tool in the field of laryngeal surgery.

Abstract: A new species, Trochiscia hamzaoglui Atici sp. nova, determined from freshwater habitat, Kesik-k?prü Dam Lake on the Kizilirmak River (Kirsehir, Central Anatolia), and the sample was taken from plankton. This new species was first found in the study of algal samples from the area. Light microscope indicated a clear relationship with the species in the genus Trochiscia. Some of the characteristic features of the new taxon include a spine and an irregular cell wall. A comparison with closely related taxa is given on.
Compositional Variation in Sugars and Organic Acids at Different Maturity Stages in Selected Small Fruits from Pakistan

Abstract: Selected soluble sugars and organic acids were analyzed in strawberry, sweet cherry, and mulberry fruits at different ripening stages by HPLC. The amounts of fructose, glucose and sucrose were found to be: strawberry (1.79–2.86, 1.79–2.25 and 0.01–0.25 g/100 g FW), sweet cherry (0.76–2.35, 0.22–3.39 and 0.03–0.13 g/100 g) and mulberry (3.07–9.41, 1.53–4.95 and 0.01–0.25 g/100 g) at un-ripened to fully-ripened stages, respectively. The strawberry, sweet cherry and mulberry mainly contained tartaric, citric and ascorbic acids in the range of 16–55, 70–1934 and 11–132 mg/100 g; 2–8, 2–10 and 10–17 mg/100 g; 2–118, 139–987 and 2–305 mg/100 g at un-ripened to fully-ripened stages, respectively. Fructose and glucose were established to be the major sugars in all the tested fruit while citric and ascorbic acid were the predominant organic acids in strawberry and mulberry while tartaric acid was mainly present in sweet cherry. The tested fruits mostly showed an increase in the concentration of sugars and organic acids with ripening.

Abstract: The present study aims to develop zirconia-Silica sand nanoparticles composites through powder processing route and to study the physical properties, mechanical properties and microstructure of the composites. Zirconia based silica sand nanoparticles composite with 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt.% were developed through powder processing technique and sintered at 1500 ℃ for two hours. A decreasing trend of green density however an improvement in sintered density was observed. Also the addition of silica sand nanoparticles with 20 wt.% increased the hardness up to 12.45 GPa and microstructures indicated the diffusion mechanism of silica sand nanoparticles into pore sites of the composites.

Abstract: Human gait is a complex phenomenon involving the motion of various parts of the body simultaneously in a 3 dimensional space. Dynamics of different parts of the body translate its center of gravity from one point to another in the most efficient way. Body dynamics as well as static parameters of different body parts contribute to gait recognition. Studies have been performed to assess the discriminatory power of static and dynamic features. The current research literature, however, lacks the work on the comparative significance of dynamic features from different parts of the body. This paper sheds some light on the recognition performance of dynamic features extracted from different parts of human body in an appearance based set up.
Toxicity of Pyrifluquinazon against Greenhouse Whitefly on Tomato Produced in Greenhouses  [PDF]

Abstract: The greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood), is a major pest of tomato, Solanum lycopersicum L. Management in both the field and greenhouse is often based on foliar applications of insecticides. A lack of control along with resistance development requires development of alternatives to currently available insecticides. Pyrifluquinazon is a recently developed insecticide by Nichino/Nihon Nohyaku Co., Japan and is marketed in the US by Nichino America. The insecticide inhibits feeding by aphids, thrips, mealybugs and scale insects resulting in death. Because limited information exists on pyrifluquinazon effectiveness against whiteflies, tests were initiated to establish its toxicity against the greenhouse whitefly on greenhouse produced tomato. Data reported herein indicate that pyrifluquinazon was highly effective against adult greenhouse whiteflies. When adults were transferred to tomato shortly after the application had dried, mortality counts taken after 48 h produced LC50 and LC95 values of 0.2469 and 2.4826 μg·g-1, respectively. Although few adults were observed on tomato foliage 24 h post-exposure, little mortality was observed until the 48 h observation. When adult whiteflies were placed on tomato 3 d after pyrifluquinazon application, the LC50 value was 0.3343 μg·g-1 which did not significantly differ from the 0 h LC50 value. A significant increase in LC50 value was observed when adults were placed on tomato 5 d after pyrifluquinazon application. In a greenhouse efficacy trial, both the recommended pyrifluquinazon rate (46.8 g active ingredient [AI] ha-1) and a reduced rate (11.7 g·AI·ha-1) significantly reduced numbers of whitefly adults when compared to the non-treated control for 10 days. Abstract:

The occurrence of multiple primary cancers is rare; it can be missed as a disease progression. The etiology remains controversial. We report a case of a 55-year-old female with metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with sutent followed by left sided nephrectomy. Follow-up CT showed increase in the size of the right axillary lymph nodes which was proven after biopsy to be metastatic adenocarcinoma of the breast. Any suspicious disease progression in a single site not compatible with disease history should be biopsied for confirmation. The relationship between renal cell carcinoma and breast cancer is still unclear, and more case reports are required to determine this relationship.

Abstract: For the geological systems, assessment of influencing exogenous relief forming processes having essential impact on development of landscape status arises need of development of various field and image interpretation methods for creation of scenarios of possible changes of a geo-ecological situation in various massif having harmful consequences, by identification of relationships of cause and effect. It was analyzed possibilities of prognosis of the changes of the geo-ecological situation in high-mountainous of Great Caucasus with use of the geological, geomorphologic, climate and landscape materials, data of digital processing of the photo images and visual observation. Also the possibilities of forecasting of change of landscape structure of highlands in natural area of Great Caucasus with use of various data were analyzed. It was defined the main differences of relief situation, hydro meteorological conditions in the various parts of high-mountainous geo systemsin which exogenic processes were shown, character and intensity of land using which had the influence to the slope slides. These data allowed revealing the main distinctions of factors of a relief situationin which were shown exodynamic relief and landscape forming processes, character and intensity of the land use, to some extent influencing on descent of landslides and area of their destructive.
