No ano de 1998 avaliou-se, entre outras informa es, a qualidade do ambiente, medida através do Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment.

Abstract: background: among the various occupations which necessarily require long-term and chronic sun exposure is that of a fisherman. however, clinical experience in dermatology earned over several years of medical practice does not seem to confirm this hypothesis. objective: to evaluate clinical, histological and immunological effects of long-term and chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation in fishermen. methods: a prospective, cross-sectional and observational study characterized skin lesions, immunological markers and histological alterations in fishermen, as well as lymphocyte subpopulations compared to a control group. mann-whitney, fisher's and wilcoxon statistical tests were used at a significance level of 0.05. results: there were significant differences between the exposed group and the group protected due to elastosis (p = 0.03), ectasia of dermal vessels (p = 0.012) and number of cells in the epidermal layers between cones (p = 0.029). most common among fishermen were cd45ro, cd68 + and mastocytes in the skin (p = 0.040, p <0.001, p = 0.001) and cd3cd8cd45ro in the blood (p = 0.016). conclusion: the alterations suggest that long-term and chronic sun exposure promotes tolerance to ultraviolet radiation, which protects against immunosuppression.

Abstract: objective: to evaluate the effects of levothyroxine (l-t4) replacement in echocardiographic parameters of middle-aged women with subclinical hypothyroidism (sh). subjects and methods: this was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. echocardiographic evaluation was carried out at baseline and one year after restoration of euthyroidism. thirty-three women with sh were assigned to one of two groups (l-t4 or placebo). results: the two groups had similar basal characteristics. there was a significant deterioration of left ventricular tei index after one year of placebo use, which differed from the effect of l-t4 replacement (+0.086 ± 0.092 vs. -0.014 ± 0.012; p = 0.047). there was also a slight reduction in cardiac output and cardiac index with placebo use, which was not different from l-t4 effect. conclusion: results suggest a positive impact of l-t4 replacement in cardiac function of middle-aged women with sh.
Duarte, Maria de Fátima da S.;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X1993000500008
Abstract: this article presents an overview of the maturation process in children and discusses data from some brazilian samples. data related to secondary sexual characteristics in both sexes are compared to other populations. the national median menarcheal age in brazilian girls obtained by inan (1990) was 13.2 years. the menarcheal age of brazilian athletes is higher than the non-athletic population. the developmental age of breast, genitals, and pubic hair in brazilian children differ little in relation to european or other latin american populations. several studies developed in brazil show that menarche is a landmark for the process of fat accumulation in females. however, in boys during the sexual maturation process, significant changes in the skinfold thickness amount and distribution are not observed. it is evident that there is a lack of studies focusing on growth, development, and maturation of adolescents in several regions of brazil, particularly male adolescents.
Fonseca, Paulo Henrique S.;Duarte, Maria de Fátima S.;
Revista Paulista de Pediatria , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-05822011000200011
Abstract: objetctive: to evaluate the validity of the equation proposed by henry and rees (1991) to predict resting metabolic rate in adolescent boys. methods: this cross-sectional study enrolled 52 boys aged ten to 17 years on a random convenience sample. the variables measured were: body mass and indirect calorimetry. body mass was replaced in the equation of henry and rees to determine the predicted resting metabolic rate. the indirect calorimetry was determined by the values of o2 consumption and co2 productions, in order to calculate weir's equation (1949), considered in this study as the standard method to calculate resting metabolic rate. all measurements were performed in the supine position and at rest, in the morning after a six-hour fast. statistical analysis included paired t-test; constant error (with a tolerable difference between the means <5%) and bland and altman graphic analysis. results: the equation proposed by henry and rees did not show significant difference in relation to the standard method and the constant error between the means was <5%. however, bland and altman analysis did not show agreement between the studied equation and the standard method. conclusions: henry and rees equation should be used with caution to calculate resting metabolic rate in adolescent boys with similar characteristics of the studied group.
O exercício do controle social no ambito do Conselho Municipal de Saúde de Canindé, CE

Abstract: community participation is defined as the process in which the population participates through its representatives in the definition, implementation and monitoring of public policies. this study investigated community participation at the municipal council of health of canindé-ce in 2007, aiming to understand the mechanics of community participation at the council. it is a descriptive study in which we used a qualitative approach. the subjects of research were 20 councilors; data were obtained through an open questionnaire and analyzed. results showed an active board and identified some weaknesses and dilemmas that can compromise the effective exercise of this collegiate in the city. councilors have different positions according to the social segments within the collegiate. such differences must be known to help and establish strategies of action to promote effective participation. in order to do so, we support a policy of continuing education at the councils, as frequent as the turnover in its composition. without training and information there is not power of action. knowledge is part of power in the social field, and should be at the basis of actions in the health councils. at the same time, it seems necessary that the councils strengthen their ties with the population; otherwise, popular representation that they strive for will be a mere utopia.

Abstract: The informal work has been an option for thousands of Brazilians, which look for alternatives to continue to guarantee the subsistence of his own and family. When they migrate to informal sector usually do it without knowing the physical and ergonomic risks of this. The purposes of this study were: 1) to describe the profile of surfboard makers (who were owner of the business, and were on informality for at least two years); 2) to analyze de real work situation (physical and organizational environment), and 3) to identify possible ergonomic risks. For data collection an questionnaire, interview and ergonomic analysis of the work (EAW) were used, accordinginstructions of Laboratory of Ergonomics and Work’s Studies at Federal University of Santa Catarina. Nine surfboard makers from Florianópolis city, Santa Catarina State, composed the sample. The principal results appear for shapers whole men, with time in this occupation among 4,7 to 24,9 years. Almost all were surf athletes, but they were still practicing of the modality in a recreational way. In the requirement health just one of them visited the doctor; and two shapers had to stand back of the work due to accident in the work. In the requirement work conditions the noise showed to be the principal physical risk in the studied places.
Blood-brain barrier breakdown and repair following gliotoxic drug injection in the brainstem of streptozotocin-diabetic rats
Bondan, Eduardo Fernandes;Martins, Maria de Fátima Monteiro;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2012000300013
Abstract: ethidium bromide (eb) causes local astrocytic disappearance, with glia limitans disruption and blood-brain barrier (bbb) breakdown. the aim of this study was to evaluate the bbb integrity after the injection of 0.1% eb or 0.9% saline solution into the cisterna pontis of wistar rats submitted or not to the streptozotocin diabetogenic model. brainstem sections were collected from 24 hours to 31 days post-injection for ultrastructural analysis and glial fibrillary acidic protein immunohistochemical staining. some animals received colloidal carbon ink by intravenous route at the same periods. in rats injected with eb, results revealed astrocyte disappearance and leakage of carbon particles beginning at 48 hours and persisting for 7 days in non-diabetic rats and for 15 days in the diabetic ones, although, in both groups, several areas remained devoid of astrocytic processes up to 31 days. in rats injected with saline, there was no sign of astrocytic loss or carbon particles leakage.

Martins,Maria de Fátima da Silva Vieira;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232010000700046
Abstract: the present article is based on a study carried in six municipalities of braga district where we performed semi-structured interviews to 100 women who had just given birth in a maternity hospital in the northern area of the country and whose residence were located in the municipalities of amares, braga, póvoa de lanhoso, vila verde, vieira do minho and terras de bouro. we tried to identify the representations of these women in reference to their pregnancy experience, where we point out that the origin of these representations is connected to a triangulate vision of the concept of health, illness and of the body. and all these concepts constitute extraordinarily positive aspects since some contribute towards an affectionate connection to the baby or a prenatal bond. it is important to point out that the knowledge hereby revealed is at most times a result of beliefs culturally rooted and that should be analysed or demystified upon the prenatal surveillance consultation.
