Family size, adolescents' schooling and the Demographic Transition: Evidence from Brazil
Leticia Marteleto
Demographic Research , 2010,
Abstract: The goal of this paper is to address whether and how the changing family sizes of cohorts of adolescents born pre- and post-demographic transition are associated with increasing schooling of Brazilian adolescents. Decomposition analyses of nationally representative data demonstrate that, although a higher proportion of post-demographic transition cohorts live in smaller families, they also suffer a larger disadvantage from being in larger families than pre-demographic transition cohorts. Additional case studies and comparative works are needed to disentangle the mechanisms behind the dynamic association between sibship size and adolescents' educational attainment found in Brazil.

Abstract: in the last two decades, the studies of information science in relation with institutional, historical and epistemological circumstances have been the subject of growing attention, which could mean a higher level of reflexivity of this field of knowledge towards itself. furthermore, the area seems to assume its belonging to the field of social sciences and humanities in a more concrete manner. these aspects provide a background for a reflection over the nature of graduate studies and research perspectives in brazil and in the field of information science. the whole of the ancib - the brazilian national association of research and graduate studies in information science is highlighted in this context. additionally, considerations are made about how research should fight the conditions imposed by a new information paradigm configured by the market and business organizations, rather than the old paradigm, which was oriented towards the state, the public and the educational sector.

Abstract: This is a report of a study on how youngsters from lower economical classes in large cities, as information subjects, transform the established meanings of discursive and narrative forms – the “third knowledge” -, revealing the influence of physical and symbolic violence suffered from state, media, school, and society, that results on negative representation for their identities. The subjects include youngsters from projects conducted by non-governmental organizations, by the state or social movements. We use the concepts of mediation and social knowledge appropriation to study how they translate their violence experiences into their symbolic reserve. We present an informational experiment, a fanzine, regarding urban violence and its effects on young people, that was carried out in the research process. The interpretative analysis based on qualitative methodology indicates a symbolic and identity conflict in a possible informational action taken on the violent contexts where these youngsters live.
Maternal age at first birth and adolescent education in Brazil

Demographic Research , 2013,
Abstract: BACKGROUND Brazil has witnessed dramatic changes in its fertility patterns in recent decades. The decline to below-replacement fertility has been accompanied by increases in the proportion of children born to young mothers. Yet we know little about the well-being of children born to young mothers in Brazil. OBJECTIVE Using data from the 2006 Pesquisa Nacional de Demografia e Saúde and a quasi-natural experimental approach, this study examines the implications of maternal age at first birth for the education of Brazilian adolescents. RESULTS We find that being born to a young mother is associated with educational disadvantages in adolescence, but that these disadvantages are attenuated once we account for mothers' selection into early childbearing. We also find that, in southern Brazil, adolescents born to young mothers have poorer educational outcomes compared with their peers born to older mothers, but that in northern Brazil no such disparities exist. CONCLUSIONS Adolescent educational disadvantages associated with being born to a young mother are not an artifact of selectivity, at least in southern Brazil. Regional variation in the effect of maternal age at first birth on adolescent education suggests the important role of the extended family and the father's presence as mechanisms through which disadvantages operate.
