Association between Metabolic Syndrome and Erythrocyte Fatty Acid Profile in Mexican Adolescents: A Trans Fatty Acid Approach  [PDF]

Abstract:

The type of fat consumed in the Mexican diet could predispose to the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) which has been associated with an increased risk to develop cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Our study included adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age, divided in two groups: Control Group (n = 31) and MS Group (n = 44). Waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglycerides, and HDL-cholesterol were determined. Erythrocytes’ fatty acids methyl esthers were quantified using gas chromatography with ionized flame detector. We identified 16 fatty acids (FA) with chain lengths from C12 to C24, with emphasis in four trans FA (TFA) isomers: vaccenic (C18:1n7t), elaidic (C18:1n9t), linoelaidic (C18:2n6t), and conjugated linoelaidic acids (C18:2n7t). MS Group had a less proportion of: myristic (C14), palmitoleic (C16:1), C18:1n7t, and linoleic acids (C18:2); and a higher one of C18:1n9t, C18:2n7t, and nervonic acids (C24:1) when compared to the control group. C24:1 and C18:1n9t had a significant positive association with MS (OR = 14.17 and OR = 12.94, respectively); whereas C14 (OR = 0.14), C18:1n7t (OR = 0.14), and C18:2 (OR = 0.22) appear to have a protective effect against the disease. The proportion of specific FAs in erythrocytes’ membranes differs between adolescents with MS and healthy controls; these FA not only showed a strong association with MS, but also correlated with most of its individual components. Interestingly, TFA displayed an antagonic behavior; while C18:1n9t had a strong association with MS, apparently C18:1n7t confers a protective effect; these results suggest that analyzing each TFA separately will constitute a more accurate approach to determine the role of TFAs in the pathogenesis of MS or other related metabolic disorders.

Abstract: El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre el alcance transformador del cimarronaje como modalidad de resistencia esclava en Brasil. Luego de introducir el concepto de resistencia esclava, se hace una revisión historiográfica de las distintas aproximaciones a ese fenómeno histórico-social, desde la escuela africanista , que ve en el cimarronaje el retorno a la tradición africana, hasta las obras más recientes que lo conciben a partir de la búsqueda de espacios de autonomía en la sociedad colonial. Abstract: in order to analyze margins and commercialization channels of a?ejo cheese, during 2007 a research was carried out in zacazonapan, mexico. the commercialization channel more used by producers in this kind of cheese was identified, and relative and absolute margins were obtained using equivalent values, revenues, and cost of each agent. results indicates that 83.3% of cheese makers obtained the first step of consumptionproduction chain and 16.7% was occupied by brokers, in the same way, first of them get 100% of price that final consumer paid and the seconds 33.4%. the gross total commercialization margin of a?ejo cheese in its modalities mature (8 days of mature) was 5.59 us$/kg; in relative words it means that the cheese producer give him 58.29% of final price that the consumer paid and the brokers 45.16%. respect to the same value of cheese mature, the cheese producer give him 41.71% and the difference was obtained by brokers. commercialization channel most common was producer-final consumer.

El negocio de la producción de semillas mejoradas y su rol en el proceso de privatización de la agricultura mexicana

Abstract: Este artículo rastrea los orígenes de la producción industrial de semillas mejoradas y enfatiza su rol en la privatización de la agricultura mexicana. El argumento establece que la modernización de la agricultura no se puede concebir como una acción homogénea y siempre progresista, como si se hubiera podido decretar de un solo golpe y para siempre, sino que ha sufrido diversos cambios, adecuaciones y retrocesos. En las conclusiones se resalta el alto grado de concentración que se tiene en la Asociación empresarial de productores de semillas mejoradas y sus efectos para la autosuficencia alimentaria y la exclusión de muchas zonas productoras de maíz donde la mayoría de los productores son campesinos pobres.

Abstract: El análisis de dos ceremonias -Semana Santa y la construcción de una casa- en el ayllu aymara de Isluga, ubicado en el altiplano de Iquique, saca a luz la relación especial que se establece en estas ceremonias y otras, entre aspectos jocosos y los momentos altamente sagrados. La risa y el humor se presentan como elementos que ayudan a crear la atmósfera del ritual, situándolo en un plano de otra realidad. Los elementos humorísticos están, sin embargo, altamente controlados y sometidos a momentos y acciones precisas al interior de las ceremonias. Sensitivity study of explosive nucleosynthesis in Type Ia supernovae: I. Modification of individual thermonuclear reaction rates

Abstract: We explore the sensitivity of the nucleosynthesis due to type Ia supernovae with respect to uncertainties in nuclear reaction rates. We have adopted a standard one-dimensional delayed detonation model of the explosion of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf, and have post-processed the thermodynamic trajectories of every mass-shell with a nucleosynthetic code, with increases (decreases) by a factor of ten on the rates of 1196 nuclear reactions. We have computed as well hydrodynamic models for different rates of the fusion reactions of 12C and of 16O. For selected reactions, we have recomputed the nucleosynthesis with alternative prescriptions for their rates taken from the JINA REACLIB database, and have analyzed the temperature ranges where modifications of their rates have the strongest effect on nucleosynthesis. The nucleosynthesis resulting from the Type Ia supernova models is quite robust with respect to variations of nuclear reaction rates, with the exception of the reaction of fusion of 12C nuclei. The energy of the explosion changes by less than \sim4%. The changes in the nucleosynthesis due to the modification of the rates of fusion reactions are as well quite modest, for instance no species with a mass fraction larger than 0.02 experiences a variation of its yield larger than a factor of two. We provide the sensitivity of the yields of the most abundant species with respect to the rates of the most intense reactions with protons, neutrons, and alphas. In general, the yields of Fe-group nuclei are more robust than the yields of intermediate-mass elements. Among the charged particle reactions, the most influential on supernova nucleosynthesis are 30Si + p \rightleftarrows 31P + {\gamma}, 20Ne + {\alpha} \rightleftarrows 24Mg + {\gamma}, and 24Mg + {\alpha} \rightleftarrows 27Al + p. The temperatures at which a modification of their rate has a larger impact are in the range 2 < T < 4 GK. (abridged)
Synthesis and in Vitro Antioxidant Activity Evaluation of 3-Carboxycoumarin Derivatives and QSAR Study of Their DPPH? Radical Scavenging Activity

Abstract: The in vitro antioxidant activities of eight 3-carboxycoumarin derivatives were assayed by the quantitative 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH?) radical scavenging activity method. 3-Acetyl-6-hydroxy-2H-1-benzopyran-2-one (C1) and ethyl 6-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-1-benzopyran-3-carboxylate (C2) presented the best radical-scavenging activity. A quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study was performed and correlated with the experimental DPPH? scavenging data. We used structural, geometrical, topological and quantum-chemical descriptors selected with Genetic Algorithms in order to determine which of these parameters are responsible of the observed DPPH? radical scavenging activity. We constructed a back propagation neural network with the hydrophilic factor (Hy) descriptor to generate an adequate architecture of neurons for the system description. The mathematical model showed a multiple determination coefficient of 0.9196 and a root mean squared error of 0.0851. Our results shows that the presence of hydroxyl groups on the ring structure of 3-carboxy-coumarins are correlated with the observed DPPH? radical scavenging activity effects.
