Abstract: dihydrofolate reductase is an enzyme involved in the production of pyrimidinic base timidin, a structural component of dna, therefore whatever substance that inhibit this enzyme inhibit the dna synthesis as a consequence and it can be potentially useful as a treatment of several types of cancer like lymphoblastic leukemias. in this work we determinate the inhibition grade that the ethanol extracts from colombian marine sponges: svenzea zeai, amphimedon compressa, ircinia campana, aplysina archeri, xestospongia proxima y xestospongia muta, over the human purified enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. the results shown that most of marine sponge extracts inhibite the enzyme. results are compared with methotrexate? a medicament used against cancer which is used as a control for the bioassays. results demonstrate that some of the analyzed extracts have more inhibition than the control metotrexate?.

Abstract: helicobacter pylori (hp) is a bacterium causing colonization and infection of gastric epithelium of man. infection allows appearance of a gastritis that may to evolve to a peptic ulcer, a gastric adenocarcinoma, or a type malt lymphoma. in other cases, infection has a silent presentation. authors studied presence of hp in patients with gastritis and in others with a healthy mucosa, seen in endoscopy consultation of "hermanos ameijeiras" surgical clinical hospital by others disorders in high digestive tract pathways. fifty patients were investigated, 30 of them had an erosive gastritis, and 20 had a healthy mucosa histology confirmed. hc was detected by amplification of a fragment of ure a gen, by means of polymerase chain reaction (pcr), in 90% of cases with erosive gastritis, and in 75 % of subjects with a healthy mucosa. the reason of odds ratio (or) was of 3 with a confidence interval (ic) of 0.52-18.9. we conclude that hp infection is so high in patients with gastritis than in those with a healthy gastric mucosa.

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori es una bacteria que coloniza e infecta la mucosa del epitelio gástrico del hombre. La infección condiciona la aparición de una gastritis que puede evolucionar hacia úlcera péptica, adenocarcinoma gástrico o linfoma tipo MALT. En otros casos, la infección se presenta de forma silente. Se estudió le presencia de HP en pacientes con gastritis y en otros con mucosa sana que acudieron a la Consulta de Endoscopia, del Hospital Clinicoquirúrgico "Hermanos Ameijeiras", por desórdenes en las vías del tracto digestivo superior. Se investigaron 50 pacientes, 30 tenían gastritis erosiva y 20, la mucosa sana, confirmado histológicamente. Se detectó Helicobacter pylori por amplificación de un fragmento del gen ure A mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa, en el 90 % de los casos con gastritis erosiva y en el 75 % de los sujetos con mucosa sana. La razón de productos cruzados (OR) fue 3 con un intervalo de confianza de 0,52-18,9. Se concluyó que la infección por HP es tan elevada en los pacientes con gastritis como en aquellos con mucosa gástrica sana. Abstract: La enzima dihidrofolato reductasa está implicada en la producción de la base pririmidínica timidina, componente esencial de la estructura del ADN. Por tanto, cualquier sustancia que la inhiba tiene como efecto la inhibición de la síntesis del ADN, y es potencialmente útil para el tratamiento de varios tipos de cáncer como leucemias linfoblásticas. En este trabajo se determina el grado de inhibición que los extractos etanólicos obtenidos de las esponjas marinas colombianas Svenzea zeai, Amphimedon compressa, Ircinia campana, Aplysina archeri, Xestospongia proxima y Xestospongia muta, presentan sobre la enzima purificada de origen humano dihidrofolato reductasa. Los resultados muestran que la mayoría de los extractos de estas esponjas inhiben esta enzima. Estos resultados se comparan con los del medicamento usado contra el cáncer, Metotrexate , el cual se utiliza como control de inhibición de los ensayos y se observa que algunas de las esponjas tienen mayor inhibición que este medicamento. Abstract: the role played by helicobacter pylori in the development of different digestive diseases has been widely studied and discussed. the presence of this bacterium in biopsy samples obtained by endoscopy was studied. 69 patients with duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, chronic gastritis and dyspepsia were investigated. the diagnoses of gastric ulcer and chronic gastritis were histologically confirmed. 27 duodenal ulcers, 12 gastric ulcers, 24 chronic gastritis and 6 dyspepsias were analyzed. the presence of helicobacter pylori was detected through the amplification of a fragment of the ure a gene by polymerase chain reaction in 100 % of the duodenal ulcers, in 100 % of the gastric ulcers, in 83 % of the dyspepsias and in 92 % of chronic gastritis, for a total prevalence of 95.7 %.

Abstract: El papel que desempe a Helicobacter pylori en el desarrollo de diferentes enfermedades digestivas ha sido ampliamente investigado y discutido. Se estudió la presencia de esta bacteria en muestras de biopsia obtenidas mediante endoscopia. Se tomaron 69 pacientes con úlcera duodenal, úlcera gástrica, gastritis crónica y dispepsia. Los diagnósticos de úlcera gástrica y gastritis crónica fueron confirmados histológicamente. Se analizaron 27 úlceras duodenales, 12 úlceras gástricas, 24 gastritis crónicas y 6 dispepsias. Se detectó la presencia de Helicobacter pylori a través de la amplificación de un fragmento del gen Ure A mediante la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa, en el 100 % de las úlceras duodenales, en el 100 % de las úlceras gástricas, en el 83 % de las dispepsias y en el 92 % de las gastritis crónicas, para una prevalencia total del 95,7 %. Abstract: background: cataract is the main cause of treated blindness in the world. it is considered that 20 millions of blind people because cataract exist, being these ones responsible for the 50% of blindness at world level. objective: to determine the prevalence of cataract in camagüey municipality from december 2006 to june 2007. method: a descriptive study in patients with cataract attended at the ophthalmological center of camagüey carlos j. finlay was performed. the study universe was constituted by six-hundred-five patients older than fifteen years attended in the consultation of cataract. the sample was selected by means of experts- criterion, which was integrated by fifty-seven patients with cataract diagnostic. the study variables were: age, sex, occupation, visual acuity, cause of cataract. results: it was determined that the greatest percent of patients presented a severe visual loss; 52,23% had no risk occupations. the senile cause represented 68, 79% of the cases and the general prevalence was about the 25,95%. conclusions: cataract prevalence increased with the age.
Evaluación de la actividad antioxidante y determinación del contenido de compuestos fenólicos en extractos de macroalgas del Caribe Colombiano

Abstract: nowadays, antioxidants are compounds of great interest because they help positively to maintain human health. there is a marked interest in searching for antioxidants of natural sources, such as seaweed. for this reason extracts from five colombian seaweeds: caulerpa mexicana, laurencia sp., sargassum sp., dictyota sp. and sargassum cymosum are analyzed in this work. total phenolic content is determined using the folin-ciocalteau method and their antioxidant activity is determined by the ddph method. results show that all studied species of colombian seaweeds have an antioxidant activity possibly related with their total phenolic content. sargassum cymosum is the most active and it contains major phenolic compounds content. results show that marine colombian sources have a big potential for searching substances, with application in the pharmaceutics and alimentary sector.

Abstract: Los antioxidantes son compuestos de gran interés en la actualidad por sus benéficas implicaciones para la salud humana. Dado que en hoy existe un marcado interés en la búsqueda de antioxidantes de fuentes naturales, como las algas marinas, en este trabajo se analizan los extractos metanólico y hexánico de cinco macroalgas Colombianas: Caulerpa mexicana, Laurencia sp., Sargassum sp., Dictyota sp. y Sargassum cymosum. Se determina su contenido de compuestos fenólicos totales siguiendo el método de Folin-Ciocalteau, y se mide su actividad captadora de radicales libres mediante el método del DPPH de los respectivos extractos. Los resultados muestran que todas las especies de macroalgas Colombianas estudiadas presentan actividad antioxidante, posiblemente asociada a su contenido de fenoles totales. La especie Sargassum cymosum es la que ofrece mayor rendimiento en cuanto a contenido de compuestos fenólicos, actividad captadora de radicales libres, y es la segunda en rendimiento en cuanto al contenido de compuestos solubles en metanol. Se demuestra así que los recursos marinos Colombianos representan una gran potencial en la búsqueda de sustancias con aplicación en el sector farmacéutico y alimentario. Abstract: treatments for inherited and acquired diseases are pointing towards gene therapy, which depends on methods to introduce foreign genetic material into cells. unfortunately, most of the methods available to allow incorporation of transgenes into the genome are not selective to target a particular population of cells. the present article describes the use of shock waves as a cell - permeabilization method to load a reporter gene into cultured cells. shock waves were generated by underwater electrical breakdown and focused on the vials containing cell suspension using an ellipsoidal reflector. transfection was achieved due to acoustic cavitation generated inside the test vials after passage of each shock wave. the number of transfected cells was still low; nevertheless, our results show the feasibility of cell transfection by underwater shock waves.
