Del 11 de Noviembre al l de Mayo: historia, identidad y memoria en la construcción de un espacio social popular. Cartagena (Colombia), 1917-1930

Abstract: This article seeks to understand May 1st in the city of Cartagena as a social space from which the working classes, organized in the Sociedad de Artesanos de Cartagena (Society of Artisans of Cartagena) and the Directorio Obrero Departamental de Bolivar (Workers' Directorate of the Department of Bolivar), gave new meaning to the date and built a collective identity and a historical memory. During the first commemorations of May 1st, this date became the stage and the opportunity to amend the exclusion suffered by workers during the celebrations of the first centennial of the emancipation of Cartagena. Artisans and worker organizations turned the Day of Independence and May 1st into a sketch of historical memory and a tool to visualize a new political project for the Cartagena of the early twentieth century.
Detección de metales pesados en bovinos, en los valles de los rios Sinú y San Jorge, departamento de Córdoba, Colombia

Abstract: objective. to evaluate the presence of heavy metals: lead (pb), copper (cu), cadmium (cd), and mercury (hg) in the liver and right pectoral muscle veal, from farms located in the sinu and san jorge area. materials and methods. adults, crossbred zebu, male cattle, approximated 2 to 7 years of age were sampled. samples were taken during a period of six months from animals slaughtered for human consumption. the metals were assessed by atomic absorption spectroscopy, using lights and tasted a hollow air-acetylene burner to determine cu; cold vapor for the detection of hg and polarography to detect cd and pb. results. the ranges of hg, cu, pb and cd are below the benchmarks of the european commission and the norma oficial mexicana. levels were not permissible for human consumption of cu in 4% of the samples. conclusions. the meat industry in the region has great potential to access international markets, since 96% of cattle had levels of metals below the permissible limits of mexico and europe. while hg levels are in the permissible limits, risk assessment based on the hazard index suggested that the daily consumption of 100 grams of meat products with levels of 0.08 ppm, might increase the risk of poisoning for a person of 70 kg weight.
HALLAZGO DE MERCURIO EN PECES DE LA CIéNAGA DE AYAPEL, CóRDOBA, COLOMBIA

Abstract: objetive. to establish total mercury (hg-t) concentrations in some fishes species in the ayapel marsh (colombia). materials and methods. sampling was conducted from july 2004 to june 2005, including both the dry and rainy seasons. hg-t was analized by cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy after acid digestion. results. the highest concentrations in hg-t were observed for analized samples of the carnivorous specie ageneiosus caucanus (0.504±0.103 mg hg kg-1 fresh weight), and the lowest concentrations in the iliophagus specie prochilodus magdalenae (0.130±0.056 mg hg kg-1 fresh wt). the highest hg-t concentrations were found in the samples of the dry season. the hg-t mean levels for fish samples did not exceed the human limit consumption level according to the world health organization (who, 0.5 mg hg kg-1 fresh weight). conclusions. the risk assessment based on the hazard index suggested that the consumption of 0.12 kg per day of fish (mainly carnivorous) could increase the risk of mercury poisoning in the local population.

Abstract: Objetivo. Determinar las concentraciones de mercurio total (Hg-T) en algunasespecies de peces de la ciénaga de Ayapel (Colombia). Materiales y métodos. Losmuestreos fueron realizados desde Julio de 2004 a Junio de 2005, incluyendo lasépocas seca y lluviosa. Las muestras fueron analizadas por espectrometría deabsorción atómica por vapor frío después de digestión ácida. Resultados. Lasconcentraciones más altas de Hg-T se observaron para las muestras analizadas dela especie carnívora Ageneiosus caucanus (0.504±0.103 mg Hg kg-1 peso fresco), ylas menores concentraciones en la especie Iliófaga Prochilodus magdalenae(0.130±0.056 mg Hg kg-1 peso fresco). Las concentraciones más altas fueronencontradas en las muestras de la época seca. Los niveles promedio de Hg-T en lasmuestras de peces no excedieron el límite para consumo humano establecido por laOrganización Mundial de la Salud (OMS, 0.5 mg Hg Kg-1 peso fresco). Conclusiones.La evaluación del riesgo basado en el índice de peligrosidad sugiere que el consumode 0.12 kg de pescado por día en la población humana (principalmente carnívoros)podría incrementar el riesgo de envenenamiento por mercurio en la población local.

Abstract: Objetivo. Evaluar la presencia de metales pesados: plomo(Pb), cobre (Cu), cadmio (Cd) y mercurio (Hg) en hígado y músculo pectoral derecho de bovino, procedentes de fincas de la zona del Sinú y San Jorge. Materiales y métodos. Se muestrearon bovinos machos, adultos, de raza cebú mestizo, entre 2 a 7 a os los cuales fueron sacrificados para consumo humano durante seis meses. Las muestras se analizaron mediante: espectroscopia de absorción atómica, empleando lámparas de cátodo hueco y un quemador de aire acetileno para determinar Cu; vapor frío para la detección de Hg y polarografía para la detección de Cd y Pb. Resultados. Se observó que Los rangos de Hg, Cu, Cd y Pb estaban por debajo de los parámetros de referencia de la Comisión Europea y la Norma Oficial Mexicana. En el 4% de las muestras se encontraron niveles de Cu no permisibles para consumo humano. Conclusiones. La industria cárnica de la región presenta una gran potencialidad para acceder a mercados internacionales, debido a que el 96% de las reses presentaron niveles de metales por debajo de los límites permisibles de México y Europa. A pesar de que los niveles de mercurio se encuentran en los límites permisibles, la evaluación del riesgo basado en el índice de peligrosidad, sugiere que el consumo diario de 100 gramos de productos cárnicos con niveles de 0.08 ppm, podría incrementar el riesgo de envenenamiento a una persona de 70Kg.
Mucocele of the glands of blandin nuhn: a case report

Abstract: Mucoceles arising from the Blandin Nuhn glands are uncommon benign lesions of the oral cavity, which by their clinical presentation may be confused with more serious diseases such as vascular lesions, pyogenic granulomas, polyps, or squamous papillomas; thereby, it is convenient to be aware of the characteristics of this entity to guide the accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment. Herein, we present a case of a 10-year-old patient with a recurrent lesion of this type, which required surgical excision and marsupialization of the same, with no evidence of recurrence during follow-up.

Abstract: the utilization of organochlorine pesticides for pest control chemical has been of great interest on residue contamination from biológical organisms in the environment. shrimp (penaeus vannamei) samples were monitored as bioindicators for assessment of the water quality in coastal waters along the cartagena bay. twenty-seven samples were collected from 3 sample stations during january, june and november of 2008. the retention times of the extracts of shrimp were compared with standard mix of 20 organochlorine pesticides. gas chromatography equipped with an microelectron capture detector was used as instrumental technique. the aim of this paper was determinate the residual contamination for organochlorine pesticides in shrimp muscle obtained in cartagena's beaches. the limit of detection of all organochlorine pesticides compounds was at the range of o.1-13 ngg-1. the concentration of organochlorine pesticides residues in shrimp was lower than the maximum residue limit for aquatic animals as recommended by the fao.
Plaguicidas organoclorados en leche de bovinos suplementados con residuos de algodón en San Pedro, Colombia

Abstract: objective ascertaining the presence of organochlorine pesticides (ocps) in raw milk from cows grazing on traditional cotton farms in san pedro, sucre, colombia. materials and methods 48 samples were taken from three cattle farms; two of them used cotton seed and soca dietary supplement.ocp concentration was determined by gas chromatography (gc) using an electron capturedetector (μ-ecd). results 100 % of the samples had some type of ocps and endrin, ddt and aldrin pesticides hadthe highest concentrations (0.62, 0.59 and 0.52 μg/ml, respectively). farms supplementing feed with soca cotton had the greatest ocp presence and concentration in milk samples compared to samples from farms which did not engage in this practice. conclusion although most ocps have been banned in colombia since 1986, residues are still being presented in raw milk samples tested from cottongrowing farms, thereby creating a public health risk for consumers.
RELACIóN ENTRE LA LONGITUD DE LA CUERDA VOCAL Y LA COMPOSICIóN HISTOLóGICA DE LA LáMINA PROPIA EN LARINGES PEDIáTRICAS

Abstract: background. the macro and micro-architecture of an infant?s vocal cord differs notably from that of the adult, and it has been demonstrated that during the maturation process there are mechanisms that occur until a given age. however, there is yet no mention of a clinical tool that would allow the assessment of these changes and could be applied to pediatric phono-surgery. objective. to assess the relationship between vocal cord length and histological composition of the lamina propria in pediatric larynxes. materials and methods. cross-sectional study of histological specimens of vocal cords with different lengths. microscopic images were studied with coloranalysis software and statistical analyses were performed using spss? 17.0 for windows. results. in 22 specimens of lamina propria from the middle third of the vocal cord, we evaluated cellularity, randomness of the distribution of fibers, presence of glands and abundance of blood vessels. the percent of collagen fibers depended in 38.9 percent (p = 0,04) on the length of the vocal cord, the corresponding percentage for elastic fibers was 26.4 percent (p = 0,061). conclusions. there seems to be no direct correlation between the percent of collagen and elastic fibers and vocal cord length in children. among prominent histological features we found the presence of abundant glands and blood vessels at the middle third of the vocal cord.
Heavy metals in Sinú river, department of Córdoba, Colombia, South America

Abstract: concentrations of al, fe, mn, zn, cu, ni, cr, hg, pb and cd in superficial sediments of river sinú were studied. samples were collected in 10 sampling stations downstream from urrá 1 dam, taking into account two sampling periods, one during rainy season and the other during dry season. metal concentrations were determined by spectrophotometry or by voltametry, they were normalized with regard to aluminum concentrations, which is a conservative element. it was observed that there was a high concentration of cu, ni, cr and zn for both sampling periods, which suggesting a common origin. furthermore, a high level of heavy metal sediment concentrations was pointed out by the enrichment factor test for each of the evaluated elements, except fe. places receiving a high impact of floodplains exhibited a larger concentration of heavy metals in sediments, as compared to other basin areas, which is associated with sulfate decrease and sulfides formation and subsequent release and availability of heavy metals.
