Study of Water Consumption in Rural Communities Estudio de consumo de agua en comunidades rurales

Revista Cubana de Ingeniería , 2010, DOI: 10.1234/rci.v1i2.16
Abstract: In order to know the water consumption pattern within the houses in rural communities, as well as the distribution and demand variation during week days, measurements were taken in two population groups of different size. One group comprises five rural communities in Sancti Spiritus Province, while the other in three mountain isolated communities in Sierra Maestra, Granma Province. According to available information this is the only study on national level done up to this day in search for water consumption in these type of communities. By the analysis of the gathered information mean per capita consumption was calculated for both types of communities. The values of this consumption depend on the type and facilities of the existing system and life conditions of the inhabitants. For this reason a single value is not recommended, instead it is suggested to a per capita consumption range for population above 200 persons for grouped housing and for dispersed housing, The use of recommended values for water consumption means lower values for water supply according to the means of distribution system.

Abstract: introduction: fasciolosis is a source of serious economic loss in various regions of brazil and when control measures of its host (molluscs) are not taken under favorable ecological conditions, isolated cases of human fasciolosis may occur. among the alternative measures for its control is the use of vegetable extracts and the purpose of this project is the assessment of the use of juice extracted from the fruit and seeds of the paraiso plant (melia azedarach l.) in the control of lymnaea cubensis, the main vector of fasciolosis in cuba. material and method: various concentrations of the juice extracted from the paraiso fruit (melia azedarach l.) were tested to determine the average and maximum lethal doses (dl50 and dl90, respectively) used in a computerized probit-log program. seven experimental series were undertaken, 72 molluscs being used in each of them. three groups of ten molluscs were tested to determine the effect on cardiac frequency, two of them being treated with cl50=0.88627 and cl90=1.7641, respectively, the third being used as control. results and conclusions: a considerable effect of both doses on the cardiac frequency of the mollusc studied was observed. the results were encouraging, for they demonstrated the potential use of this plant in the control of undesirable molluscs.
Spectral and Finite Difference Solutions of the Hyperbolic Heat Transport Equation for Thermoelectric Thin Films  [PDF]
Aldo Figueroa, Federico Vázquez
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/am.2013.410A3004
Abstract:

This paper presents the numerical comparison in the solution of the hyperbolic transport Equation that models the heat flux in thermoelectric materials at nanometric length scales when the wave propagation of heat dominates the diffusive transport described by Fourier’s law. The widely used standard finite difference method fails in well-reproducing some of the physics presented in such systems at that length scale level. As an alternative, the spectral methods assure a well representation of wave behavior of heat given their spectral convergence.

Abstract: Recibido 15 de junio 2007 Aprobado 20 de agosto 2007 Resumen. Abstract. The article must like intention reflect, from a critical perspective, on the use of the technologies of the information and the communications (TIC) in the rural education, under the assumption that these resources are not in themselves solutions to problems, but that can allow to obtain solutions to concrete problems, in the scope of the rural education. For it, an analysis becomes from different edges.

Abstract: The objective of this intervention was to strengthen the Social Service program through an active participation model between students and their communities, promoting a cohesive education and a sense of social responsibility in students. This was a mixed quantitative-qualitative study, transversal-descriptive including pre-post test measures in social service students related to information regarding family violence and the cultural consensus around the purpose, barriers and benefits of social service. Through the experience of community social service, students widen their understanding of family violence and its manifestations, enriching their comprehension of the phenomenon. During the post-test evaluation, the development of social abilities as a part of the cultural consensus on the benefits of carrying out their social service was accentuated. Furthermore, the consensus on the lack of disadvantages of carrying out their social service was increased, while the perception of the need to increase expenditure of time and abandoning other activities was reduced. The experience of community social service allowed students to link academic knowledge to community knowledge, while at the same time their opinion of social service itself was modified in a positive way. Students were able to insert themselves in their community and establish horizontal relationships. Social service represents a means to exercise citizenship and social responsibility. However, it is primordial to involve all other characters in the university universe to guarantee the continuity of projects and actions to benefit communities.
