Abstract: this paper portrays a study about the use of the internet research by graduate students at universidade federal de mato grosso/campus universitário de rondonópolis. it aims to verify whether the students present any kind of difficulties during their research. in order to develop this research, it is necessary that the research be efficient when it comes to search strategies. there are several ways to develop a relevant research; among them there is the use of booleans, which filter important information about the desired topic. there are several explanations about research in general, web research, search mechanisms, research filters, and librarian role. a questionnaire about access and use of available information on the internet was applied to the students as a way to get data. it was concluded that graduate students use the internet to do their academic papers, although they have difficulties with the back up of information, since some pieces of information found on the web are not consistent, or because there is a lack of support and orientation to get information through filters.

Abstract: the chapter takes a recently launched catalogue with the complete works by frans post to argue about the technology for processing sugar and manioc in colonial brazil. the seventeenth century dutch painter lived in brazil from 1637 to 1644, during the dutch occupation of pernambuco, and left a rich collection of paintings and sketches most of them representing the northeastern landscape, in particular sugar mills and non-identified plantations. the paper relies also on contemporary written sources to demonstrate how post canvas can leads us tointeresting analysis about the production and uses of manioc meal and sugar during the first half of seventeenth century.
Laser beam welding tempered 300M ultrahigh mechanical strength steel
Carvalho, Sheila Medeiros de;Lima, Milton Sérgio Fernandes de;
Journal of the Brazilian Society of Mechanical Sciences and Engineering , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-58782012000100003
Abstract: aisi 300m ultrahigh strength steel has been used in a number of high demanding applications, such as the vls brazilian rocket project. this work intends to propose laser beam welding, with subsequent tempering, as a possible route for the fabrication of engineering pieces of this steel. a 2 kw fiber laser was used to produce welded coupons for metallographic, hardness and tensile strength tests. it has been shown that convenient laser parameters for a 3 mm thick plate are 50 mm/s welding speed and 1200 w laser power. however, both welded materials and heat-affected zones presented high hardness and negligible plastic deformation. in order to produce useful engineering parts, it was suggested a tempering treatment for 2 hours at temperatures of 200 or 400oc. tensile mechanical testing has shown that welded and tempered coupons presented both yield and maximum strengths comparable to the unwelded material. on the other hand, a maximum elongation of about 4% was obtained, in comparison with 12% from the bulk sample.

Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) & Discussions (NHESSD) , 2010, DOI: 10.5194/nhess-10-2429-2010
Abstract: This work investigates recent changes in precipitation patterns manifested in long annual and monthly precipitation time series recorded in Portugal. The dataset comprises records from 14 meteorological stations scattered over mainland Portugal and the Portuguese North Atlantic Islands of Madeira and Azores; some of the time series date back to the 19th century. The data were tested for trends using the Mann-Kendall non-parametric test and Sen's non-parametric method, searching both for full monotonic trends over the record period and for partial trends. Results provide no evidence for rejecting the null hypothesis of no trend in annual precipitation, when a monotonic linear model was used. Nevertheless, the analyses of 50 years' moving averages showed an increase over time, in the recent past, for many of the series in mainland Portugal and the Islands. For the longest time series this behaviour was preceded by a decrease over time. The analyses of partial trends in the time series suggested a sequence of alternately decreasing and increasing trends in annual and monthly precipitation, which are sometimes statistically significant. The trend changing points were identified.

Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762001000700019
Abstract: in this study, the ability of maxadilan and lutzomyia longipalpis salivary gland lysate to enhance the infection of cba mice by leishmania major and of balb/c mice by l. braziliensis was tested. no difference was observed between sizes of lesion in cba mice infected with l. major and treated or not with salivary gland lysate or maxadilan, although they were injected in concentrations that induced cutaneous vasodilation. although parasites were more frequently observed in foot pads and spleens of animals treated with maxadilan than in the animals treated with salivary gland lysate or saline, the differences were small and not statistically significant. the lesions in balb/c mice infected with l. braziliensis and treated with maxadilan were slightly larger than in animals that received leishmania alone. such differences disappeared 14 weeks after infection, and were statistically significant only in one of two experiments.

Advances in Geosciences (ADGEO) , 2010,
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to investigate trends in annual and monthly precipitation in mainland Portugal by studying long time series. The data are from ten measuring stations scattered over mainland Portugal; some of the time series date back from the 19th century. Trends in these precipitation series were examined using the Mann-Kendall non-parametric trend test and the Sen's non-parametric method. Both full monotonic trends (i.e., over the record period) and partial trends were investigated. Results provide no evidences for rejecting the null hypothesis of no trend in annual precipitation, when a monotonic linear model was used. On the other hand, the analyses of partial trends in the time series identified a sequence of alternating decreasing and increasing trends in annual precipitation, which are sometimes statistically significant. This type of behaviour was also observed for the monthly precipitation.

Abstract: The analyses efficacy of a practical activity addressing the measure of morphological characteristics of Boldo Mirim (Miniature Boldo), (Plectranthus neochilus Schltr.) which were cultivated in two conditions of solar intensity (50% and 100%), involved two professors and 7 students who participated at different ways in planning, performing and evaluating the results. This activity was carried out in 49 students matriculated in the discipline Botany II of 1st semester of the Biological Sciences course of UFF. The objective of the present study was to foment the construction of a significant learning about concept of specie and phenotypic plasticity. To perform the measurements on the leaves: 1) the foliar areas by two methods (weigh and counting); 2) the internode distance; and 3) the presence of trichome, two types of papers (baking and millimetric) and basic equipment such as manual calibration caliper (mm), precision analytical balance (0.001 g) and a monocular stereoscope (40×) were provided. It was verified that with the reduction in the availability of solar light, the Boldo Mirim increases its leaf area and the distance internodes for the best use of the luminosity in the photosynthetic process, whereas in conditions of full sunshine this plant invests less in leaf area and reduces the distance between leaves that are practically superimposed to avoid stress due to excess of light. After following the proposed protocol, the questionnaire with 12 questions about the plant’s characteristics,
